Argos seem to be supplying these in place of the 108 (not the same Machine)as advertised. The 108 can be hacked to play VCD's SVCD's and multi region DVD's and none of these hacks work with this machine.
I will be taking mine back as soon as they re-open after Christmas.
My rating may be a bit mean but it just does not do what I want it to.

I got a DVD player from Argos for an Xmas present and that turned out to be an Alba 109. So it would seem to be a little pot luck on what you get from them at the moment. Don't know about the xi but the 109 is hackable very easily and has played everything i've thrown at it thus far....
Maybe try a different Argos shop.

this is my first dvd player so I don't have a comparison comment to make.
I was disappointed that the machine was not multi-region, however this cheat works:-
