“Not sure if anyone else had this experience but I have...”

★★★★☆

written by dannywu on 19/01/2004

Not sure if anyone else had this experience but I have recently noticing that the screen "flick off" then back on in about 1 second...every now and then... it looks as if someone switch it off and quickly back on...

anyone?

Also, when watching DVD with scenes in complete blackness, I still notice there is an irregular "wave" sweeping from left to right (unlike the old problem with the FQ75 which they replaced for free)...

Any ideas?

“I was looking for a 32" Widescreen TV to replace my...”

★★★☆☆

written by Square eyes. on 25/03/2003

I was looking for a 32" Widescreen TV to replace my ageing Sony 4*3 format telly. It was a natural choice to go for another Sony, especially as I had such good service from my old set. What a shock, in all formats that the 32FQ80 telly could display, all horizontal lines were bent. Barrel distortion big time. The sound was very hissy on sibilant consonants. I was so disappointed that the suppliers replaced it with another 32FQ80 the very next day. I was sure that this would be the solution, maybe the first set had a motorway accident or something. I switched it on, waited a second or so, then hey presto the picture, then the sound, was it good? Hell no, just the same, The worst barrel distortion that I have ever seen, and that sound, or should I call it screeching noise that emanated from it.

Sorry Sony, but this is not progress, Listen and listen good "A STRAIGHT LINE IS A STRAIGHT LINE" not a sine curve that you chaps seem to think.

Having gone back to the shops for another look, most WS sets for some reason have this distortion with the picture, the worst being Sony, Phillips and Toshiba being the best. Not just Sony, but all manufacturers should take a good look at quality control as the product leaves the factory, because what I see and hear doesn't look good at all.

“Tired of the digital artifacts found on other TVs...”

★★★★★

written by Guitarz. on 12/11/2002

Tired of the digital artifacts found on other TVs featuring the much raved pixel plus and other digital treatments I went to review this TV set without big hopes.
After just a few minutes I was amazed of the quality and definition of the image without any noticeable digital artifacts from the DRC-MF. Fast Action scenes don't leave pixelated trails behind like in pixel plus sets and digital noise isn't generated from the adding of information.
The sands in the Star Wars Pod Race scene are free from noise and the image is sharp and detailed. In the Mummy returns where I also noticed lots of problems with panasonic and philips high end sets was free from the noise in the sky and the artificial edges. I think it's time for Philips and Panasonic to start reviewing their digital algorithms !!!!

Helpful review but would have liked a more wide ranging coverage. Does this set correct the design problems with the previous model, KV32FQ75 (banding and general unreliability)?
regards

Monday I walked my usual round at "Electronic World" here in Denmark. As before, I noticed the "smeared" pictures with loss of details on all 100 Hz TV's - Philips, Panasonic, JVC, Loewe, Sony - with one exception: Sony KV-32FQ80. The source, however, was a single CD Player showing a movie. Mostly almost all 50-100 TV's are feeded from the same DVD-signal. I asked if this Sony had DRC-MF activated, but the salesman claimed that this model didn't have this feature! Of course he was wrong about that, but I was in a hurry, so I couldn't make it out myself. So what are your experience using and not using DRC? Pros and cons?

I had Sony change my power supply and now I dont have the buzz anymore. It probably had a leaky transformer or something. I love the image of this TV !!!!

I bought the Sony KV-32FQ80 for about a month ago. I haven't heard any buzzing at all from powersupply or any other disturbing sounds. But the picture... Oh my! Have never seen such clear and crisp picture! And blackness is very good too! Only strange thing I've noticed, is when I put on the sleeptimer. Sometimes it shuts down in just a minute even that I've put timer on for example 50 min. But it always works the second time I try.
Anyway I'm really satisfied with KV-32FQ80!

Hello
The FQ80 I have has some buzzing in the power supply also. But when watching a movie you don't notice it. You only notice it if you're watching TV late at night with a very low volume.
Anyway I find the image of the FQ80 far superior to the FX66. See if you can find an FQ80 in a store to check out if the buzzing is too much for you.

I am just about to buy (I think) a 32FX66 but wondering whether its worth upgrading to the FQ80..? I have been offered an FQ75 at a great price but have been put off by poor reviews now.. Does the FX66 suffer from a buzzing power supply noise coming from the back of the set as per some reviews I have read, or does anyone know if later/recent models have been improved.. it's the only thing thats putting me off - and if I did consider an upgrade to the FQ80, does this have the same noisy power supply..? guys, help me decide..

Thanks for your reply. I was on the point of buying a KV32FQ75 but was put off by the faults reported on the net (comparestoreprices, agroraquest, avforums and others). The faults included general unreliability, poor focus at the left of the picture, noisy power supply and the often reported problem of banding. Banding refers to visible bars on the screen, especially noticeable on dark pictures. The banding is worse when an external source(DVD)is used. It was reported that Sony were unable to fix the banding problem and that they would launch a redesigned model to correct the faults. That is why I was interested in your review of the KV32FQ80 because I still need a set and Sony generally have the best picture quality- even the FQ75 when you get a good one.

I just ordered a sony kv32fq80, after suffering 2 faulty philips pw9527 sets. pixel plus is rubbish, only works with dvd, and even then isn't to everyone's liking. Hope the sony version is better. I will post verdict soon.

As for the unreliability I can only say that I have the TV for 4 months and it is behaving like it should every time. I dont know what you mean by banding. If you explain it I can check out if the problem exists. But I don't see any artifacts when I play my DVDs ( dont watch much TV ) Only complaint is that the power supply is a bit too noisy on my TV but I'm still trying to settle that with Sony that says its normal ! ( I dont think so ) But the Image is top notch ! Beats any philips or panasonic for this price.
