When My English Teacher First Recommended Anne Of
When my english teacher first recommended Anne of Green Gables to me to read for my assignment, I was very sceptical. I had read this book once before, and all I remembered of it was a 6-page-long description at the beginning of the book about Avonlea, and I am just not the type of person wiht patience enough to read that sort of stuff. However, soon enough, due to my laziness and impatience with other pre-1914 books, I found myself on a Sunday afternoon in August with the book on my lap, turned to the first page. I could no longer put this off. As I began to read, however, Anne's spirit leaped off the page at me. I could relate to her like I had never related to any other book character before. She was so different to the people that surround us in modern literature today. She was not plagued by selfishness or some secret agenda. At points in the book I cried with laughter, her ridiculous mishaps seeming so real, and at other points I had to wipe away the tears. This book seriously made me think about how I treated others, and how others saw me. No, this book was not life-changing, but it was thought-provoking, and everyone should read it. So there.
