Absolute disgrace. Got funny with us when we said we had our own insurance and then low and behold when we returned the car some damage/scratches on the underside, yes underside, of the car apparently! “Own insurance equals bad service.”

At alicante airport I Picked up my pre booked car from Drivalea (via zest who are very good) but had my own insurance. The car paperwork identified 17 different scratches so I took photographs. On returning the car they went over the car very thoroughly and found two scratches not identified on my paperwork but also of the 17 identified several were not actually on the car so the paperwork was compromised. “Worst experience ever”

Avoid avoid avoid!! I would strongly advise anyone not to use drivalia. To start off we were kept waiting 35 mins at the airport waiting on the shuttle, then queued another half hour at reception. Once we were served they did not provide me with the car I had paid for but a lesser alternative (hyundai tucson). After we drove to our destination the car went flat and battery died. We've been renting from Drivalia for the past three years and it has always been a good experience. We prefer to choose the Ultimate since it saves you the hassle in case of an accident, damage or stuff like that. Yes, you pay more, but it's a carefree experience and for us it's worth it. We used Drivalia in the Summer, from start to finish a horrible experience, we had an accident which wasn't our fault and because we didn't purchase the SPECIAL EXTRA INSURANCE WITH THEM, we were treated as second class customers, forced to pay more than €1000 and threatened not to be given a replacement car until payment was made, the employee was a disgrace, shouting at us, verbaly abusing us and charging us for things without even looking at the car!!!!! We have used Drivalia in the past with no issues however a recent experience has left a very bitter taste. We were charged 185 euros for a small scratch that was hardly visible to the naked eye and I am convinced was on the car when we picked it up as it was clearly not new. Dear Customer,

We do fully understand that it is frustrating if you are charged for a damage on your rental car but we would like to point out that we work extremely hard to ensure that our system is water-tight in terms of protecting our clients and that our customers are only responsible for damages that occur during their rental period.

You have rented cars from us before and so you know from your own experience that you have hired cars and if no damages occur there are no charges for damages but on this occasion the car was returned with a new damage that was not on the car when you collected it and we do make clear on the Basic packages the size of chargeable damages.

Obviously damages sometimes happen without the knowledge of the customer. Bumps, scrapes, scratches and so on can easily happen when the car is not attended and likewise little things like scratches on the wheels and lower parts of the car can easily happen when parking without the driver even noticing.

It is very important for you to understand the steps that we take (some of which are unique to us) to ensure that records of damages and when they happen are accurate.

Firstly, we keep a computerised log of all damages including photos. We check the car each time it is returned to us against the records that we hold and record any new damages in that moment. Likewise between rentals, during the valeting process and prior to the cars being parked for the next client these records are checked again.

When you collect the car, if you have chosen a basic package where you are responsible for damages you would have been given a comprehensive damage report showing a list of all damages that we have recorded for that vehicle. This shows the damage description of the damage and the location of it along with a number and a diagram of the car showing exactly where the corresponding damage is relating to. The same report also explains the types of damages that you would be responsible for and details the measurements of what is chargeable and what is not chargeable. This also has printed rulers for your convenience so that you can verify the exact size of any damages.

Our staff always explain this document and tell clients that they should check the car to satisfy themselves with the condition of the car and the accuracy of the report before they leave the car because by driving out of our compound with the car you are accepting and agreeing to the reported condition.

It is extremely unlikely that there will be a damage on the vehicle that has not been recorded already but obviously by giving you this report it acts as a double back up so that you can be absolutely sure of the inspections that we have already carried out. In the unlikely event that you do find any damage that is not recorded then you simply have to tell a member of staff who will check this with you and if it is a chargeable damage they will record it in our system, take photographs and sign it off on your damage report.

I hope that you can understand that taking these steps and inviting you to inspect the car yourself is our way of being honest and transparent. Sometimes customers tell us of car hire experience elsewhere where no report is given so they just have to trust the integrity of the car hire company. For us this would never be good enough because we want you to see the records that we hold and be sure that you agree with them.

Obviously when you return the car we are also different to a lot of companies who simply operate a "key drop" system. During normal office hours we inspect the car with the client present and compare it to the exact same records that you have with your contract. Naturally if there is a new damage that was not there when we inspected the car and not there when you inspected the car at the start of your contract then it is correct and fair to assume that this happened during the rental period.

In the few cases where cars are returned out of hours then these are inspected immediately by our staff when we open at 8am and obviously the client is free to take photos of the car themselves before they leave it to ensure that they are not charged for any damages that occur after they leave the car.

The problem that we, and other car hire companies in Spain face is that customers always demand low rental costs and on the very low cost packages we simply cannot afford to sustain the costs of damages. We must pass on the costs for either immediate or eventual repairs or cover the charges made to us by the manufacturers in cases where the car in question is leased. We try to be very transparent about damage charges and we publish a pricing matrix on our website which states the exact prices for each type of damage on all of the car groups.

It may be worth mentioning that we offer coverage products which removes all the risk for our clients and we also offer an all-inclusive package - Drivalia Ultimate - where the price you see is the final price with no extras and where we cover the costs of all damages. This package is by far our most popular and although it is slightly higher in price than the low-cost packages, it offers complete peace of mind and to be honest compares extremely favourably in price to similar packages at almost all worldwide destinations.

I hope that this email has helped you to understand how we work and why charges have to sometimes be made but more importantly that is reassures you as to our integrity and the measures we have in place to ensure that damages really are only charged when they are due to be charged.

Thank you for hiring a car from Drivalia. It should be pointed out that for the overwhelming majority of our clients our 24 hour roadside assistance service if provided completely free of charge. If you choose a low cost package and choose not to have everything included then this is a chargeable service should you choose to use it.

We always advise clients when they collect the car of the contact details for the local office if they have any queries but we do point out that there is also a roadside assistance number for emergencies and that (in your case) it is a chargeable service from the moment you call.

If you had called your local office first then you could have made arrangements to exchange the car at no cost but by calling the service we are automatically charged and on the low cost package we must pass this charge on.

Once again a stupid answer! As I mentioned I was concerned about the car and therefore I contacted only for 4 minutes your ‘ Road Assistance’ (cash cow). Unbelievable that the Thank You is a bill with discount of only €815!
This has got nothing to do with low cost hiring! In my understanding you should be happy with customers who drive their rental car like it is their OWN car, but instead you simply blame the customers for hiring for low cost. First you attract customers with low pricing and then you blame them..... too easy! You need loyal customers for the bussiness not only One day flies. But ofcourse this is depending on your company strategy....

We hired directly with Drivalia car rental on the internet for car hire from Alicante airport. Car hire including their Ultimate insurance very reasonable. They are off site at Alicante airport, however their transfers are quick and punctual. “Avoid as a hell”

The worst car rental company I ever used! I don’t understand what is the point to run this business if you disrespect customers. I arrived to their office in Mallorca and found that they try to scare you about other cost that you have to pay if you don’t buy their insurance. They picked me up on time at the airport, in fact I was late because I was waiting at the wrong place. I called the office an a nice lady told me to go to the SALIDAS door. The paper stuff was done very efficiently, the car was new and well looked after. The staff told me about the advantages of booking next time directly with DRIVALIA.
