“First of all these are not EVsx300s wth a built in amp...”

★★★★☆

written by MegaMario on 11/04/2011

First of all these are not EVsx300s wth a built in amp in any way at all. These are a completely different breed of speaker but in the same enclosure. I have owned and used SX300s and found they have a nice enough sound but quite lacking any real stage presence when used with a band, even as monitors. The main difference is the use of a much up rated horn which is usually to be found in EVs higher spec speakers and of course it is a powered, bi-amped with Ev's own amplifiers which are also brilliant. I got a pair of EV SXA360s with the monitor feet and used them as monitors at a theatre gig, one each for us two singers. Now everybody including me, my other singer, the Pa engineer and the drummer sat 20 feet back behind a drumkit (obviously) were all very impressed with them. Really punchy sound lots of headroom ideal for monitoring not a hint of feedback just great. These are definitely an excellent choice for floor monitors. I have also used them twice for FOH ( main Pa Speakers) once on a solo gig and once with 4 piece band. Although they did the job very well I did find them a little harsh or 'shouty' and found especially on the solo gig that I had to tame the mids and add reverb, which I don't normally use, to smooth out the sound. Having said that, on the band gig at a small hotel without instrument mic up, they worked really well and cut through with a full sound. In fact we positioned them just in line with the guitarist one side and bassist the other, with me slightly in front and in the middle and I found I didn't need my usual floor wedge at all. I had a great vocal and the knowledge that I was actually listening to the FOH sound and not my monitor. This was real old Skool band mixing from the days when we didn't have enough auxes to run monitors. Which is a nice easy way to do it especially with two flights of stairs to get up. I got these 2nd hand at a bargain price but I don't think I would buy them new. If I was going to spend that kind of money on what I refer to as entry level tour grade equipment I would definitely go with the RCF ART722A which are actually a bit cheaper and yes slightly bigger but have that lovely RCF 2 inch horn which has a lovely sound. So if you can find SXA360s on sale in good condition for under a grand they are a really good buy I I do recommend them for sixe weight and overall performance.
