“Booked the Eleanor Rose cottage boat through self...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 05/04/2011

Booked the Eleanor Rose cottage boat through self catering scotland, as we thought it would be something different from the normal. It's a 57 foot narrowboat and cost £130 for 2 nights, reasonable for self catering. Boat was lovely but what could have been a fantastic weekend, ended up very disappointing. With it being a boat and not connected to mains you rely on power from batteries. we knew this already before going but were wrongly advised that battery time would last a while before having to run boat enginge to re-charge. Problem was we used microwave for 2 mins and power died. Was advised that this would drain battery, so didn't use again. boat batteries were re-charged in full on the sat, but died again on sat night so couldn't even watch the tv. Got to point that heating didn't work, fridge stopped working, couldn't watch tv, basically could not use most of the facilities on board, so what is the point of them being there. We called owner but they did not resolve the problem for us, even although they came out 3 times. We complained to the owner only to get £40 of our money back, but he has assured us that they have included more info in the visitors pack, warning people of the power limitations. He also offered future discount if we go back. Sorry but after that experience we won't be back and will not be recommending to friends. If all these problems were resolved it would be a great weekend away, but in our opinion would have been aswell going camping which would have worked out cheaper in long-run. The more correspondence I had between myself and the owner, the more irrate he would get, and at the bitter end of offering us £40 refund stated that the matter was closed, even although i felt we should have got 50% of our money back. They just seemed to start making excuses for the why the power wasn't working properly and why the batteries were draining so quickly. I also won't be booking anything else again through self catering scotland.

Just need to point out that this boat has transferred to another company and is now available for hire through Canal Boat Escapes and this review is not representative of the service offered.

These people clearly do not understand that a narrowboat runs off batteries and unlike a house is not connected to the national grid. Therefore, if you do not run the engine, for around 5-6 hours per day you do not have any power.
