“The Phil & Teds Hammerhead is overall a good purchase...”

★★★☆☆

written by glenc on 17/02/2011

The Phil & Teds Hammerhead is overall a good purchase and I would recommend it.

The good points:

1. It fits two kids pretty well and feels very sturdy. The extra wheel (its a 4 wheeler rather than the normal Phil & Teds 3 wheelers) makes it feel really stable, which was very important to us as we felt the 3 wheelers felt a little unsteady with two kids in it.

2. The kids love it and enjoy being in it

3. The cocoon is really snug and the newborn sleeps really well in it

4. Its a pretty smooth ride for both kids and the versatility is great - ie all the different modes it can go in to accommodate the growing kids.

5. The raincover (the doubles one we have) is reasonably easy to put on and not too bad at folding back up (they're all pretty hard!)

The bad points:

1. The instructions are pretty dire, so expect to have a few hours or scratching your head. But once you get it, it all makes sense, just a shame they couldn't have spent a few more pounds on this expensive item to get the instructions right. Some stuff you simply have to work out yourself as there are zero instructions with the product and zero online - eg how to attach the cocoon (2 small velcro pieces of material at the back, in case you're still wondering!)

2. Its VERY heavy!! We went from one kid in a lightweight McLaren to this, so maybe that's going from one extreme to another, but even without the kids in it, this is a really heavy pushchair - so beware if you suffer from a bad back or are not that strong - its a beast to get in and out of the car. It folds down reasonably small which is a good thing, but the weight is a nightmare for getting the buggy (complete with 2 kids) in and out of a house or up / down any steps - it really is quite difficult.

3. Although I find the ride very smooth for the kids (the blow up tyres help with this - although beware of getting punctures - we put in a special 'slime' product which makes the tyres almost puncture-proof) I do find that the buggy is quite hard to handle sometimes. The front wheels seem to have a bit of a life of their own - and rather like a car with poor tracking or a dodgy supermarket trolley, it tends to veer off to one side or the other unless you really push it hard. So, not a show stopper, but a bit annoying, it means its reasonably hard work to push.

4. Phil & Teds dont seem to quite think things through - so lots of things you'll discover are not quite right and you wonder why they didn't design it differently. For example, with the toddler in the top seat (with doubles kit) their head pretty much rubs on the bottom of the sun visor (and this is with a small 2.5 year old, nothing like a large 4 year old). There are lots of little things too, like the cocoon has two velcro attachments to connect it to the buggy. These are really tricky to put on and off (particularly with a sleeping child in the cocoon) plus why oh why dont they have 4 to stop the child potentially catapulting if you hit a kerb or something? Also, velcro for this isnt great as its really noisy to take off (thus waking the child) - so why didn't they think it through and use a clip of some sort? There are loads of things like this where you think "I could have designed this better!". None are massive in themselves but overall they add up to an annoyance.

So, this is one of the many 'nearly there' products.

When we first got it both my wife and I thought we'd made a huge mistake and regretted it. that said, a month or so in to using it and it does feel better - I think we've just got used to it and have begun to accept the downsides.

Just to reiterate a few points from earlier though; it is sturdy, feels very safe and the kids love it - so on that basis I would just about recommend it, but I would hope/expect that someone can bring out a product which surpasses the Hammerhead as its by no means a perfect piece of kit - and it is priced at a point where you'd expect something close to perfection.
