“Terrific suction but that's all”

★★★☆☆

written by Ieuanfawr on 07/06/2014

Our old Dyson finally died - not the motor/suction, but the plastic body/chassis seemed to have become brittle. Pieces broke off, leaving very sharp edges on which fingers and hands were cut. We bought a DC33 at a discount. It seemed more suitable being lighter and more compact. Positives: Terrific suction. Great on open acres of carpet. Light and compact. Negatives: Horrendous high frequency noise which hurts the ears. Even worse in small rooms. Dyson say it's normal. Light means it doesn't seem very robust or stable. Hoses suck well and fairly easy to assemble. When using the hose, the DC33 easily falls over. Stairs become difficult to clean thoroughly. Hose attachments should be better. My conclusion: If you want a Dyson, avoid this model. Your ears will hurt.

“on board pipe useless”

★★★★☆

written by sjl2656 on 07/04/2014

great hoover shame about the pipe its dangerous trying to do stairs as you have to hold the pipe at an awkward angle whilst holding the hoover. its nightmare using the pipe on florrs etc also hoover tips up. hoover itself works good just need to develop pipe so you can use tools properly instead of struggling

“DYSON NO MORE!!! DO NOT USE AUDIOVISION IN SHEFFIELD...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by teamlemon on 29/04/2013

I had the DC01 (and still do) and was happy with it, but has now started to leave debris about so decided to purchase another, the DC33i. I really liked James Dyson for his determined pursuit of getting his product to market, and thought maybe this man's company would be better, WRONG! I am sadly disappointed that his customer service is just like all the rest. It is a noisy machine (which I was told by Audiovision in Sheffield (another useless company) that it would bed in, but not according to Dyson - that is how they are? but nobody mentions this on their websites. I feel it is dangerous, the flexi-hose reduces by half when the power is on and the machine hits me in the back when hoovering under units, etc. I said it should have brakes on the wheels to stop it moving and was told Dyson had thought about that but then it would probably fall over!! and guess what, as I put my foot in the way to stop it chasing me, it does fall over, and this is an engineer from Dyson - go figure. I asked Dyson if anyone actually does any hoovering with these machines (in human form and not the robotic arms) and all I got was they do get tested, my response to them was not great. If my hair is near the holes in the wands it sucks that in too. That will be the last Dyson for me too. In my opinion it is far too strong a motor, hence suction, and this should be addressed. Is there a site to list all the rubbish items and rubbish companies - there should be just one website to visit to check things out. If anyone knows please let me know - thanks.

“The last dyson for me!”

★★☆☆☆

written by Farginsneekyicehole on 23/04/2013

I regret sticking with the Dyson brand. My advice would be to look elsewhere, this hoover feels cheaply made and doesn't work very well. Congratulations Mr Dyson, since moving your production abroad you have made yourself a tiny bit richer, such a shame your hoovers are now rubbish.

“Stuiped problems - not OAP friendly”

★★★☆☆

written by BluntLuke on 22/04/2013

Good suction, despite others saying otherwise. Easy to change from carpet to hard floor - again despite others saying otherwise. Other than that everyone else is bang on with their comments about the rest!! I had an older model, but decided I wanted HEPA filters and more suction. However the older model was much easier to hoover stairs and pipe around edges. This one chases you around the house! And then this weekend I pulled the hose apart - 3 steps from the top of my stairs! It's too strong, plain and simple. The re-coil of the hose down the stairs knocked the hoover across the floor. And have you seen the cost of a replacement hose?! Then there's the emptying of the dust bin - it's good job I'm a man. On mine you have to press that little button seriously hard to release the catch (no good for elderly/weak people to use). And the bin bottom flap needs pressing hard to get it back on. Lastly is the tool - what rubbish. You'll be hovering something delicate with the brush end and then it slides up revealing a chisel tip that'll scratch most surfaces! Come on Dyson - stop farting about with fans and get back to producing the best hoovers.

“No as good as the DC07”

★★★☆☆

written by Russell Buckley on 09/03/2013

My 7yr old Dyson DC07 recently packed in (motor burnt out) It was a great machine with powerful suction of carpets and hose extension suction was also excellent although the machine was a little heavy taking up and down stairs I could cope with that for its suction power. I went to Curry's to the Dyson part and spoke to the Dyson sales advisor who explained the difference between all the machines but at no stage informed me that the suction was not as good as the DC07, we went ahead and purchased it £199 (offer). When we 1st used it I noticed the suction when running over the carpets was very poor and had to go over the same area several times to pick up the bits on the floor, I knew straight away that it was a poorer suction as the DC07 picked up our door mat when going over it and the DC33 did not. The accessory tools are different also and the DC07 tools wont fit the DC33, I do not like the 2 in 1 piece accessory that comes with the 33 model, on the plus side it is lighter and the flex is a lot longer than the DC07. I emailed Dyson the day after buying it and to be fair they telephoned me within the hour to go through the machine to see if it was working correctly, the advisor went through some checks and told me that the vacuum was fine and is in working order, she did say that the 33 has a lower motor output than the 07 model but I still should not experience a loss of suction power when running over the carpet, and that was it really there was nothing I could do, I am stuck with it. I did tweet about it when I saw a link on aol website were a guy set his dyson on fire and I commented how I would like to do the same, again to be fair dyson tweeted me back and said I should call the helpline to see if its working properly, I told them I had already done that and they said it ok, I was then told that the motor although being a lower output will not affect the suction, well guess what it does, after I said that they never tweeted back. If you have not had a DC07 before and you are after a vacuum the 33 model will probably be ok for you but I personally dont like it and will give it to my daughter when she moves into her new place and I will do my homework better before buying a different vac. “noisy and tacky”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ursie469 on 31/01/2013

Bought this in a hurry and am regretting it after two days. The piercing whistle is almost unbearable and the rest of the machine has a plasticky cheapness about it that does not bode well for the future. Sucks o.k. but can't use it for more than a few minutes before the noise drives me mad. Dyson should be ashamed of itself. Or find a way of sorting the problem. Last Dyson I will ever buy.

“Piercing whistle”

What an infuriating machine. The high pitch whistle from this machine, which Dyson is aware,is unbearable. I suggest Dyson reads these reviews and does something about it. This is the very last machine I buy from Dyson.

“Dyson DC33 Multi Floor - Poor Quality & Design”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/10/2012

This newer model is a backward step. Compared to earlier models, like the DC07, the DC33 is of a very inferior quality, the majority of it manufactured from thin flimsy plastic. Noise level is almost unbearable with a loud whistle. Dirt collection canister is much smaller. The tools supplied are very flimsy & the crevice tool is too short & will not fit into tight spaces due to the sliding brush that is permanently attached to it. The tools only loosely push fit, rather than click fit, into the flexible hose & they fall out the moment you try & use them with any vigour, especially the stair tool. The wand is now made from bendy plastic tubing, rather than aluminium, & using the tools with the wand is very unwieldy. The flexible extending hose is shorter than the DC07 so does not reach the top 12th step of our stairs and to extend it fully requires 2 hands and great effort. Suction seems OK but again is of lower air watts than the DC07. Wand & hose are of a smaller diameter than the DC07, so none of the more superior DC07 tools will fit the DC33. Suggested to Dyson that they produce an adaptor to permit DC07 tools to be used with the DC33, that they develop a means of securely fastening the DC33 tools into the flexible extending hose & produce a longer hose, or at least a flexible hose extension. Unfortunately suggestions met with nil enthusiasm. Very expensive for an inferior plastic vacuum & very disappointed, especially as the Dyson help line seem impervious to the design faults and failings of the DC33.

I agree with everything you say here.
The whistling/screeching high pitched noise is awful and remains in my ears long after I switch this vacuum off. I contacted Dyson about this by email and they were quick to respond. An engineer came out within a couple of days but thought the noise was part of the design of the cyclone. I pointed out that if the dust container is loosened slightly the noise goes away and the motor noise is then acceptable. He said he would send another dust container/cyclone but it hasn't made any difference. I am very surprised that such a company as Dyson have produced a machine which is of inferior quality to our previous Dyson. My wife wants her old Dyson back. I may have to put a claim in for ear damage if I continue to use this machine. Very disappointed.

Jimmydyson's Comment

Written on: 28/12/2012

Hi Shieldsman - Thought you would like to see what Dyson's response was to my complaint when I emailed them about this very expensive, flimsy new model they have duped customers with. They declined to take up my offer to demonstrate the faults/problems and failed to send an engineer to investigate, which indicates to me that they are fully aware of the inept design & flimsy quality of their DC33 machines.
Their email reply was as follows:
"I am sorry to hear you are disappointed with the DC33.
Please be assured that the individual plastic parts are fully tested before a vacuum cleaner is launched. The entire vacuum cleaner is also tested at Dyson on a computerised rig that accurately simulates vacuuming at its most vigorous. As well as this we complete extensive home trials to replicate normal domestic use. In conclusion, the plastics used to manufacture Dyson vacuum cleaners have consistently proven to be durable and strong.
Regarding the tools and bin size these were changed after listening to customers feedback about our machines, I appreciate this will not suit all of our customers. The push fit tools was deemed suitable as the suction of the machine is strong so you should not need to apply a lot of pressure on the tool. Unfortunately an adaptor is not available to allow you to use your DC07 tools on your machine.
Please be assured that all Dyson cleaners are extensively tested, and that noise levels are comparable with other household appliances.
At Dyson we take all product performance criteria very seriously and are constantly striving to improve the acoustic signature of our machines, including DC33, which is no exception. The tone you refer to at 6470hz is indeed the blade passing frequency of the vacuum motor and is an unfortunate consequence of high flow motors of this sort. It is actually the same specification and variant motor that is used in DC14 but the fan tone is not as dominant on that machine".
NOTE; there is no acceptance by Dyson of their design faults or any hint that they will rectify the problems! Reckon a VAX machine is a much better buy, being much cheaper, & they give a 6 years warranty.

They make huge profits on their machines but I think they will rapidly lose their 'loyal' customers as more people realize the inferiority of their latest product.
Fortunately I also have a 'Henry' which is lovely and quiet and has suction which is just as good as any Dyson.

“Appalling vacuum cleaner”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/09/2012

Dyson DC33: I purchased this model after owning a previous model for a number of years, which proved to be very successful. However, this model is nothing short of appalling. There are buttons absolutely everywhere to change settings or release and return different aspects of the cleaner (quite infuriating!). The cable is so heavy it could be used for welding and it becomes entangled with itself very easily. But the aspect that causes most frustration, is the extendable hose that DOESN'T! This component is so strong and tight that it does not extent a single inch without pulling the whole cleaner with it, far less stretching the length of a set of stairs. Subsequently, when attempting to use the hose with a brush attachment for cleaning delicate items, it is quite feasible that the whole cleaner will either run into your furniture or just fall over damaging your possessions. I will not be purchasing another Dyson after this experience. This model has driven me to despair!

“Dyson DC 33 Multifloor. Unstable and unfriendly”

★★☆☆☆

written by bobjan1 on 18/07/2012

Good parts - Plenty of suction and a HEPA filter. For straightforward floor cleaning there's no problem. Bad points - The spring in the hose is much too powerful; the machine will constantly be charging up behind you. Dyson's advice is too place it on an angle. This either causes it to fall over or simply straighten up and charge across the floor until it bangs into your legs. On stairs, because of the strange clumsy design of the wand, two hands are needed to control it. The tools are not able to swivel in the end of the wand so that corners on the stair treads are difficult to clean. The shape of the wand makes it almost useless for architraves, tops of cupboards, curtain rails etc. The combined brush / crevice tool is much too short to clean down the side of seat cushions. The wand / hose assembly is very fiddly to replace in it's holder; the flex is anything but non-kink; the filters can be washed out but the housing doesn't always go back properly. It is frustrating when comparing this with one of the earliest models which had none of these design faults. We have owned this thing for 6 months and have given it more than a fair trial, now we're going to cut our losses and buy a different make.

“I've just bought this Dyson DC33 a few days ago & so...”

★★★★☆

written by on 08/02/2011

I've just bought this Dyson DC33 a few days ago & so far so good, its way more powerfull than my old vax v006 & a lot quieter! comes with a couple of tools that seem to be ok & i got mine from argos so it came with the matress tool included for free although i've yet to try it so can't comment on its use. i bought an accessory set for the car & the dog groomer tool with it, also from argos, & with the included adaptors the tools do fit however they don't clip into place the same as the standard tools do & that means i cant use them in the handle section (wand) & it makes the groomer awkward to use effectively, but i rang the freephone dyson number & the nice lady i spoke to confirmed that the items i'd bought didn't fit together properly out of the box & susequently decided to send me out the appropriate adaptor for free! VERY happy with the customer support :D . using the hose is more complicated than it needs to be & when using it stretched beyond a few feet the machine isn't as stable as dyson would lead you to believe..... but overall it's a brill vacuum so far & i don't regret buying it one bit. hopefully it will live up to my expectations & last me many years.

Purchased a new DYSON D33 from Comet ,got home and assembled the machine. The machine would not pick up !!! Spoke to Dyson and they confirmed that the machine was faulty !! The whole process was painful and caused us considerable travelling costs and all because Dyson have no effective quality control ???
This happens with almost everything we buy in this country these days , profitability has overtaken providing good service !!!!
