“Problems, problems, problems”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 345Rooney on 19/12/2016

Where to start....The driver suddenly was out of date and had to be replaced. However, it won't load. Before that, it wouldn't print grayscale unless all the colors of ink were not out of ink. So simply printing a page of black and white document often meant running out to office depot during office hours only to buy some yellow ink. The ink ran out without using it, so many, many trips to buy ink despite hardly using this stupid printer. The manual is set up for all kinds of esoteric uses of the printer but basic uses have somehow been entirely ignored. What a waste of time and money.

When you buy A ink cartridges it the same as buying a new printer, so after a year throw the printer awy and buy a new one it is cheaper.

Maybe the printer is technically okay but the software is the worst I have ever seen. Unless you like to get veryr, very frustrated, don't buy this disaster

“Worst Printer ever!!!! Beware.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by review_California on 10/07/2013

Canon MG5200 series printer. This printer prints accurately, it looks nice, it has a nice display, and you can even print and scan wirelessly. By now it must seem like a great printer. BEWARE!!! This printer goes through ink like no other printer on this earth. I've had it for about 3 years now and I rarely print anything. Maybe once a month I print 5-10 pages, maybe. This thing runs out of ink probably 4 times per year. And just now I try to scan something and it WILL NOT allow me to scan until I replace the 1 ink cartridge that is out of ink out of the 5 ink cartridges it has. When I mean it will not, it will not, I'm a software engineer and I know my way around technology. The manufacturer had to have designed it so you have to buy ink if you want to scan. Between college and grad school I used a cheep HP printer for 8 years and I had to replace ink about once every year or two years and that was at a time of my life when I had a lot of stuff to print, and it allowed me the scanning function regardless of how much ink I had. This was supposed to be an upgrade but it sucks and is totally about making you buy ink and frustrating my life. Worst printer ever made period.

“Overall good”

★★★★☆

written by WilliamMouritsen on 06/04/2013

I got the Canon PIXMA because I needed both a new printer and a scanner for school. The printer takes a few seconds to warm up when you begin using it and shakes my desk as it warms up and prints. It's a fairly quick printer, so the few seconds of desk-quake are bearable. Lines print crisply and the color comes out almost exactly as it should every time. I did my senior year of high school online and had to print out tests every week to mail in, but only had to replace my ink cartridges once or twice. The scanner is quick as well, and has a nice high resolution. My only complaint about it is that the color is never right. Photographs and drawings tend to scan in strange colors, but an image editing software can fix it. Pencil drawings scan in with the paper slightly orange and I usually have to edit the contrast levels. All in all it's been a reliable printer and scanner the past year or so. It could be more quiet and have better colors in scanning, but it prints more quickly than the scanners I've had in the past. It's a nice little printer for the price.

“CONSTANTLY sucking away ink with needless printing cycles!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by wiskey_lunch on 21/02/2013

I've really had it with this printer! It runs a cleaning cycle after EVERY print job if you wait more than 1:30 minutes. This is outrageous! I have an MG5200 series... Canon made the ink cartridges SMALLER and they intentionally programmed in constant cleaning cycles!!

“Total piece. Not worth a shiny dime”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Barnicus on 02/02/2013

I'll start that to its credit It prints good photos, colors are nice and bright, not blurred. But after only several uses it became cumbersomly slow, then it plain out broke. The rollers that load the paper went out, now it's useless. Plus it takes a Martian day to prep itself for the work it can't do ( lots internal noises and such). Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy, unless he had to print something defamatory about me; because it wouldn't get printed.

“Canon Pixma MG5200 is a great printer”

★★★★★

written by itpro on 14/12/2012

I've had this printer for a year. It works great, does really nice photos. I have been buying complete sets of ink cartridges (5) for $7 on ebay. I think it's great that you only have to replace the ink that is empty, that and the low cost of ink is why I bought this printer. It was a snap to set up wireless. I have it in my upstairs office but print to it from all over the house. Good maintenance functions for cleaning the print heads and feed rollers. I have 3 HP printers which all use HP 61 ink (only the all in one is on line because I use the scanner). It cost more for a couple of sets of ink for them than I paid for this really good printer. I was buying the HP printers at Walmart, taking the ink out and giving the printers to Goodwill. If your primary goal in life is overpaying for ink, then by all means shop HP or Lexmark, etc. If you want low operating expense, good wireless operation and nice photo quality, ignore the whiners on this site and get this printer. I spent 20 years at AT&T and IBM supporting desktops, laptops, servers and printers.

“MG5250 AVOID !!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by frenchie16 on 26/11/2012

This was an upgrade on my previous Canon printer. I have had it for just one day and I am so disappointed. I liked the overall look and features, particularly the wireless capability and the fact it had the 2 paper feeds. Easy enough to set up, but when it came to actually printing it was a nightmare. It takes a long tome for the printer to process a document sent wirelessly, the the actual printing itself is really slow, to the point it only partially prints the page then ejects the paper as the session times out, I have not tried it with the usb printer cable attached and i am hoping it will be faster that way. Overall, very, very disappointed.

“Broken in 6months”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/08/2012

The printer looks nice externally and the interface is useful when setting up wireless printing, but both paper feeds (bottom and top) stopped working within six months of receiving the printer. For the last six months I have been hand feeding every piece of paper through the printer because I unfortunately sold my previous printer and don't have money to buy a new one. Lastly, the printer leaves random blank spots as if the ink jet is partially clogged. When I tried to return the printer, I was told that since it was a gift I cant verify that I bought it from Cannon and that they wouldn't replace it. I will never buy a cannon product again. NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE IT WILL CAUSE.

“Uses a LOT of ink, & SLOW!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/08/2012

I would NOT recommend this printer to anyone! everytime I turn it on it has to clean the ink cartage heads ( a total waste of ink!)sometimes taking 5 minutes to print a sheet!( I timed it!),..because of this cleaning it does ALL the time! I have had 2 HP Printers before this THING!,..And I'm going back to HP Printer,..It's faster,..and uses a LOT LESS INK!!! The Canon REFUSED (all the Time,..what place to feed the paper from (Tray or Rear) I tryied to uninstall sofeware & reload,...that didn't do any good,.... ..so my canon MG5200 is now being hauled off by the garbage man!!!

“Good for the price - wireless slightly buggy on occasion”

★★★★☆

written by on 12/12/2011

We bought this for home use a few months ago. We've done quite a lot of colour printing on this, including a set of party invites & 20+ A4 sheets of photos, and only the one colour (cyan) we happened to use most has run out, so I think this is pretty reasonable. I'm surprised at other reviews saying that this printer is slow to print, once it starts printing it takes about 2 secs to print a page, which I think is pretty fast. The printer has a cassette for feeding plain A4 paper, so you do not have to have paper sticking out of the back of the printer, meaning that it can be kept dust free pretty easily. If you leave the printer on, it even opens the front of the printer itself when told to print, so it really is hassle free - you can print from another room without having to do anything to the printer at all to get it ready. We did find the wireless feature a little buggy on occasion, the laptop seemed to 'lose' the printer for a few weeks but then started working again. However you can also print easily from either a USB pen or a memory card if you don't want to connect your PC directly. Further, I have just found today that this printer can even duplex (print on both sides of the paper) by itself if you just select 'Duplex' in the printer properties - great when printing long documents and you don't want to waste any paper! All in all, a pretty decent set of functions for the price.

Have had this printer for over 2 years now and very satisfied. Wanted individual ink cartridges and the good thing about this Canon is if one of the cartridges is out of ink, it will stil print compared to other printers, when one cartridge is out of ink, it won't print at all until you replace the missing ink cartridge. Don't understand all the bad reviews this printer had. Wanted this articular one because, as my Epson did, could print on CDs and DVDs.Does the job real fine. Easy to program on a wireless network. Does recto-verso by itself, realy great. May not be the fastest printer on the market, but for the price and its all in one features, scan included, it is a great buy. Needs a delicate touch because the trays are very cheap plastic. No worse than a Brother I bought and returned the day after. Was so loud I thought I was scrubbing cement instead of printing. Overall a great printer and at an offording price, well under 100$.

“Like others all the features looked great, exactly...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 09/03/2011

Like others all the features looked great, exactly what we wanted, big separate black ink and smaller colour inks for those few times we want colour. Printing a single pages takes ages, even though we have not selected to print in colour the colour inks are all but empty. Even after ensuring the defaulting settings was in grey scale, still the colours are being used. the wireless printing is good, the use of the colour inks indiscriminately and the ridiculous amount of time to print a single page are major let downs. Have had no qualms on the quality of the prints to date, once it actually prints...

“My family and I bought this printer, because our...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/03/2011

My family and I bought this printer, because our previous one was getting too expensive to replace all the cartridges. The Canon MG2500 had cheaper ink, and it was also wireless, which was great because we have a laptop and a monitor. It worked alright I suppose at first, but now the printing quality is terrible. It prints horizontal stripes though all of our photos, the ink colours don't show up the same as on the computer, and sometimes it just won't print things. The wireless connection is slow, and sometimes it can take up to half an hour before it responds, even if the computer is in the same room as it. It's now too late to return it, but I hope no one else makes the same mistake we did in buying it. Opt for something more expensive, because chances are it will be worth it.

“We have two Macs and a LAN through an Airport...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/01/2011

We have two Macs and a LAN through an Airport Extreme.Although we're not "techies" we have always been able to do things fairly easily with this system. But It is now two and a half hours since we started to set up the MG 5200. The printer shows it is on the LAN, and one computer can print to it. The other doesn't find it (although it is still connected fine to the airport). We have been through every suggestion in the manual. It's incredibly unintuitive to set this thing up (by Mac standards). I would suggest you only buy this thing if you have a long life ahead of you and nothing much else to do.

“The make, presentation and description seemed to make...”

★★★☆☆

written by tinyred on 28/12/2010

The make, presentation and description seemed to make this an ideal printer. However, upon usage within a few weeks, I noticed two big negatives. First of all, the length of time it takes to print a single document is ridiculous. I have never waited so long for a piece of paper to come out from the printer. A few times the document I printed had bad quality, even though on other printers and the previews it printed perfectly - for example on a table, the lines were not straight and they were very pixelated too. While the functions are good, they do not always do what you wanted too - I once clicked on 'Colour' and it appeared on the screen as printing in colour, but came out black and white. A let down from Canon.
