“Nokia N8 = Amazing!”

★★★★★

written by Richard-Leeds on 25/07/2012

I Had A Nokia N8 On Virgin Mobile & I Love Everything About It, The Style, The Features. People Ask Me Why I Didn't Get An iPhone Or One Of The New Samsung's And It's Basically Because, Nokia's Are Much More Than Just A Fancy Phone That Talks To Back To You. For Me, It's The Features. 16GB Internal Memory, A 12 Megapixel Camera. HD Video Recording, HDMI Output, TV Output & Of Course The Free Maps & Drive Service That Nokia Incorporates Into It's Phones. In My Opinion. iPhones & Samsungs Are Nothing More Than Fashion Accessories. I Did My Own Survey Of Around 30 People I Knew With iPhones & Asked Them About It's Features... Many Could Only Name A Few Things. Camera App, Siri (Which Apparently Doesn't Work As Well As Is Advertised) & The Third One... Wait For It... Was How Big The Screen Was. All Pointless & Irrelevant In My Opinion, The People I Surveyed Couldn't Tell Me The Latest iOS Or How Many "Bug-Fix" Updates It's Had (I Can Tell You It's In The Region Of 20)... Too Many For A Big Company Like Apple. Anyway The Nokia N8 Is Worth Buying For The Fact, You Don't Have To Take A Phone, A Camera & A Video Camera Out With You On A Night Out. It's All Packed Into One Phone For A Fraction Of The Price Of Other "Smart Phones" The Only Downside To The Nokia Is The Now "Nokia Belle" Update... It's A Bit Buggy Now It's Been Installed A Few Months. So I've Had To Re-install It 4 Times In The Last 2 Months. I Would Recommend This Phone To Anyone Interested In A Real Smartphone With One Of The Best Mobile Phone Camera's On The Market... STILL! Thanks For Reading My Review & I Hope This Helps Making You A Decision! Richard.

“Good camera, poor functionality”

★★★☆☆

written by GeraldH on 13/07/2012

I got the Nokia N8 phone as an upgrade from my N86, hoping they would have ironed out a lot of the software bugs - but they hadn't. This phone is slow, clunky and just very disappointing. You get the feeling that it's trying to be an iPhone, but it just doesn't work as well. On the face of it, the specs are good. A decent amount of storage memory, a good camera and a reasonably sized screen with a good resolution. Unfortunately, it is just glaringly obvious that they should have paid attention to one thing above all others - usibility. The one saving grace for this phone is the camera, which is phenomenal. It's amazing being able to record in HD and upload professional looking video clips to YouTube. I'm not a big video maker but I do like to do a bit of casual editing, and the N8 helps a lot with that. In fact, it's the only reason I have kept it since I got my (you've guessed it) iPhone.

Got this phone for about year and half ago. Till now everything was fine. Exept that this phone is symbian based platform, the choise of programs is quite limited. But recently appear one problem, the phone starts to restart alone. When i try open any program, the screen freeze, and the phone restarts! Sometimes during call! but dont do this all the time, have days when it works fine. Take to the service, and they said that don't detect any problem. After 2 days it happened again. And now is apparently ok. Dont know what to do. I like that phone, got realy fantastic camera, but that problem whith restarting is make me mad!!! HAs anyone have the same problem?

“Not a smart phone”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/04/2012

I got this on a cheap contract direct from Nokia and T-mobile (T-mobile have been excellent) Its a good phone and for a touch screen feels a little unresponsive. The camera / video is brilliant. The major problem is software, you can only use Nokia authorized products and there is very little inout from other massive software designers / producers. Some resent updates have improved the operating system alot but it still does not feel software engineered. As far a reliability I have had this handset for 18 months and everything still works, touch wood, but it has not been dropped and well looked after, my ex partner has had 2 c7,s breakdown completly on her. Best features are camera and web browsing but felt out dated after 6 months.

“Fantastic camera, but it's no iphone”

★★★★☆

written by on 22/01/2012

I bought this phone as a compromise between smartphone features and a camera that actually has a decent flash. As very few phones on the market actually use xenon flash choices were quite limited. LED flash just does not cut it in low level light conditions. On the basis of a compact camera there isn't much I can say against the N8. However, if you are not too bothered about the camera issue then it would have to be an iphone(3gs onwards) all the way. As much as I hate to see us all walking around with identical phones I honestly don't think they can be topped in terms of full user satisfaction. Bottom line the N8 is pretty slow in comparison to other smartphones of similar spec in terms of starting up applications, loading conversations etc but for the price at the time(significantly lower than similar competitors)I cannot really complain.

“A very good phone with a few annoying traits.”

★★★★☆

written by Biker_Bob on 23/12/2011

I've been a Symbian fan for years so the N8 was a natural upgrade from my N97. A lot has been written about the camera and it's all true - there is no better camera phone. The multimedia capabilities of the N8 are very strong, Dolby 5.1 surround, HDMI video out, 720p video recording, \"play via radio\" (the absolute killer feature now copied by others). The N8 has a 3d graphics processor so gaming is very good, connect it to your telly with the AV lead and play racing games using the accelerometer as the steering - who needs a Playstation? It has USB on the go too, you connect memory sticks, hard drives, keyboards and even a mouse! So overall I think this is a phenominal technical achievement for Nokia, I love it -BUT now for the downside: Battery life, can't call it more than adequate, you get through the day, just (I'm a heavy user so others may do better). The on screen keyboard, it's all there - character preview, haptic feedback but they put the cursor forward and back keys either side of the space bar, so more often than not when going for you hit and then the cursor jumps to the begining of your text - this frustrates the hell out of me! Those are the only two things I can think of to criticise, It's a wonderful device

“Fantastic snapper!”

★★★★☆

written by jb771 on 13/06/2011

The N8 is a fantastic alternative to your camera and camcorder. It has a 12 MP camera and HD quality playback. This was the main reason why I purchased the N8 and from this perspective it has not failed to live up to my expectations. Other good points is the WiFi capability that allows you to make use of WiFi hotspots to prevant your network data allowance being used up. Downloading speeds are a lot quicker on WiFi however at times reception is poor on pure reliance of network reception for downloading. There are plenty of apps to download in the OVI Store but it is poor compared to itunes (I also own an IPOD touch) and if you wanted to purchase a phone for apps i would recommend the iphone on experience of itunes. The N8 however is a good alternative to the iphone, battery life is better, the sat nav embedded in the phone is excellent and is on par to my car sat nav, and the camera / video capability is out of this world. The N8 is your one alternative to your camera, camcorder, mp3, and sat nav all in one device. There is one massive downside to this phone - if you are a lover of predictable text you will find that the touch screen often mistakenly brings up menus when you are typing away your text to change to number mode or a differnt language mode - it is a difficult phone to get used to texting especially with one hand!

“brilliant, simply brilliant”

★★★★★

written by neilpugh on 05/06/2011

this phone has the best digital camera and video recorder ever. i was able to sell both my £150 sony hd camcorder and camcorder then use the cash to buy this phone. the image quality is streets ahead of iphone. the phone is very tough and after 6 months there isn't a single scratch on the screen or the phone surface. it still looks brand new. the software although weak compared to android and iphone is still fast, although occasionally a restart is needed. it's also way more intuitive than the iphone given that it is designed to work like the software from previous nokia phones. it has free satnav, which is brilliant and the ovi app store has many free games including angry birds rio, tetris, worms, sims 3 and so on. unlike android and iphone these games are not full of irritating adverts. there's a big update to the software coming soon which corrects many of the problems the phone was harshly criticised for at launch.

love this phone!!! had it for 3 months and only problem i have with it is the battery life isn't great, it does help that your able to charge via usb from laptop or pc though. camera is fantastic, love the face recognition especially when trying to capture pictures of my 3 kids together. music player isn't the best i previously had a nokia x6 which i traded for the n8 and i think the sound quality on x6 is a lot better. no problems with this turning itself off or rebooting for no reason which was a massive problem i had with the x6. love the fact that it feels more sturdy than a x6 (i dropped that once and the whole case fell apart) and that the battery is housed inside the phone itself. overall a brilliant phone which i'd recommend to anyone!!!

2 weeks I've had this phone. It worked well for the first week (with only 1 re-boot). After that first week I had almost convinced myself that I'd made the right choice of phone (iPhone4 was the alternative). My second week has been a disaster. I've lost count of the number of times this phone has turned itself off. Sometimes it re-boots itself. Mostly it is a struggle to re-start the thing. Today it has died totally (day 15) and is going back to Vodafone. A real pity for Nokia because the satnav, camera (stills and video) and battery life looked to be winning features. A case of excellent hardware and very poor software. Surely this is the end for the Symbian o/s.

Nokia Had very bad press with All the Faulty sets of N8 that didn't work for more than hours after you first purchased them !
I was Unlucky enough to get one of them!
Yet Nokia , will not apologize or offer to replace these sets unconditionally when and where It happens. Instead they tell you the usual story. Go & bring it back from where You bought IT!
IS that Right ? I am asking !
They messed Up Badly, yet they have NO remorse or feel sorry for the inconvenience they give to their customers.
In my trade we know that THE Customer IS EVERYTHING! And HAS to Be looked after the best we can!
NO Matter what Industry You work in , IF You did not understand THAT , Then YOU DID NOT understand Anything!

Build quality excellent! Functionality - a bit hit & miss! Promises much and occasionally does deliver. But the touch screen is imprecise and is quite fond of ignoring your touch. The most frequent contacts box that you can install on a home screen is a case in point.More often than not a moving symbol indicates your touch command is in progress - then nothing happens! I would also say that Nokia Ovi Suite recently updated is to be frank - rubbish - it doesn't even like my computers screen resolution thus putting functions beyond reach (off screen!)Tried various resets to no avail. Good in part but I believe offerings from Apple, Samsung & HTC are likely better product currently NB This is my second N8, first one was returned to O2 with software issues.

“Feels nice in weight and the aluminum case is solid...”

★★★★☆

written by nottinghamfella on 08/12/2010

Feels nice in weight and the aluminum case is solid enough. Smallish in the hand.

The camera has 12 megapix and video recording in 720p and can upscale to 1080i via the HDMI port(cable included)

The lens is great and has an actual mechanical shutter for high speed photography which worked amazingly.

The main screen now has 3 home screens customizable. The contacts widget now can have a list of 20 attached to it that can scroll along.

The battery has a design fault; the batter is not removable as its screwed into the handset. The Nokia N8's battery isn't meant to be replaced by the end user. This is made clear by the fact that the device is sealed and held together with screws - oh, and Nokia says not to in the user manual. However, some new pictures have surfaced, and it looks like swapping out the N8's battery is as simple as removing two screws and popping off the bottom.

Battery life lasts around 20 - 24 hours depending on usage.

Good points: three home screens, big screen to watch videos, good sound when listening to music and video.

Bad points: Battery and battery life

“Nokia has only one thing in mind. It's COMPETITION....”

★★★☆☆

written by anuptn on 30/11/2010

Nokia has only one thing in mind. It's COMPETITION. This is clearly allowing them to slip in the world market of the premium smartphone. Wonder what they thought it would be.

One of the slowest phones. Forget multi-tasking which was never Apple's virtue, it can't switch between an Application and the main menu fast. The only interesting thing is the OVI downloads, 4 million songs free is great. However, that is spoilt with the DRM. The audio quality from the in built speaker is lousy. Its even worse on my HT through the FM Transmitter.

The Touch Interface is way better than my first interaction on a Nokia Phone. But that's that.

“Looking online I see I am not alone - there are...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 02/11/2010

Looking online I see I am not alone - there are hundreds of reports that Nokia have seriously mucked up this softare.

This phone constantly freezes, sometimes it magically comes back (after losing information!), the last time it didnt and now it's completely dead.

I'm stuck without a phone, but worse I cant get to my diary/contacts.

Before the phone died it kept freezing (several times a day), struggling with the simplest of tasks - even rebooting itself for no reason.

The menu's are positively ridiculous and it seems Nokia have totally forgotten that the customer wants to make PHONE CALLS. It takes several non-sensical clicks AND scrolling to make a call, the touch screen getting things constantly wrong, and you can't even bespoke your own shortcuts to help yourself out.

Plus point - iplayer softare (although the phone doesnt even stand upright for this like the N95 did)

Minus point - can't turn it on!

I'm on the phone to Vodafone - waited on hold for 26 minutes to speak to someone who was bored, didnt care and then cut me off.

Funnily enough, I heard about Vodafone's astrominal profits on Radio4 only yesterday. NICE.
