“I had lusted after a Rover SD1 since my girlfriend's...”

I had lusted after a Rover SD1 since my girlfriend's posh dad gave us a lift home in my teens. The back seats were incredibly, um, accommodating. The styling is most un-Leyland, Italian and based on either a Ferarri or Maserati depending on who you believe. Who cares, it's a great shape and nice and low over the bumps. Yet the shocking practicality of it is amazing, 5 comfortable seats, a huge boot. High level of creature comforts including electric mirrors, electric sun roof, electric windows, central locking, wood trim, two lights under the bonnet (OK... for when it breaks down at night), and a trip computer that reads only too accurately how much cash is going up the exhaust. There's plenty of room under the bonnet, one of the best forums at the club for trouble shooting. OK, it was Leyland's first attempt at fuel injection there are a lot of tubes and wires under the massive bonnet. It's fun getting to know, the Haynes manual is comprehensive and all the parts (well most) are available from a Lincoln firm, Rimmers. And it's a piece of history - the last, truly great British car. Oh - did I mention it goes like stink? My auto has hit 115 and was still going strong. Oddly enough a very tight (efforlessly powered) steering circle to make parking a joy. And you'll never be bored again , chasing the rust around the car. Now all I need to is look up the old girlfriend and ask if she'd like a trip down memory lane, on the back seat.
