The "book Of Eli" Is A Rare Case Of A Film Being B

The "Book of Eli" is a rare case of a film being better than its scenario. The scenario is 'B Movie class' stuff, full of time-honoured cliches, but the excellent photography, directing and acting (in that order perhaps) make it truly 'A Class'. Denzel Washington's character was refreshingly believable despite his 'unbelievable' stunts and heroics while the other main characters are also solid supports. The strongest point of the movie is the overall atmosphere very successfully aided by high contrast, low saturation photography and wonderful use digital technology. Only European comic books have managed to create such an atmosphere and I am wondering to what extent the Hughes brothers invested in French BD (Bandes Dessinees) before filming.

Finally, I loved the ending which was refreshingly not very Hollywoodean with few sparks and good, solid retribution.

If You Can't Get Enough Of This Post Apocalyptic S

If you can't get enough of this post apocalyptic stuff,'The Book of Eli' isn't a bad addition to the genre.

Coming hot on the heels of The Road, Eli is a far more conventional and formulaic vision of future hell.

Though The Book of Eli devolves into a very basic series of pitched battles between the good and evil adversaries, the film does exert a tight grip on the viewer.

Directors Allen and Albert Hughes stage some impressive set-pieces, including intricately choreographed fights and a stunning shoot-out covered by a single rotating camera.

I actually really quite enjoyed this movie. It didn't turn out to be a blockbuster, but nor was I expecting it too. Pretty good story, and nice little twist at the end. I for one didn't see it coming.

This Movie Has It's Pluses And Minuses. Recently T

This movie has it's pluses and minuses. Recently there has been a lot of apocalyptic movies from involving zombies, to cannibals to global warming. With the success and well deserved praise for The Road, this movie follows in the similar vein. The key difference is the choice of the protagonist's skills and drive. There is no doubt that Denzel Washington again shines in a great action movie as its main protagonist. His motivations are within pure honour and one would say he's almost like a religious fighting monk. The in-shadow fight scenes and shoot-outs are really good. However, what lets the movie down is the overt religious drive and rather unbelievable ending. The ending for me was a bit lame when you take into his account his memory vs the EDITION and FORM of the thing he was recollecting. Additionally, we're introduced to a character that leaves the movie open for a sequel, but it would have been better to shut the book, so to say! Tension is kept up to the point where Denzel matches up to Gary Oldman who has his own plans for the book. The concept that the book could become a weapon of power, when in the wrong hands is interesting but it doesn't go far enough to see Oldman as a person who wants to corrupt the source material's teachings. Additionally, if the type of book was seen as dangerous and was destroyed en-mass, I could not see why people would really want to follow it's dictates again? What The Road misses in amazing fight scenes, the Book of Eli makes up for. The key difference is the former makes reference to the end of days without stating why or when it occurred plus it still makes reference to religious direction. The Book of Eli is pure a religious diatribe with everything explained to the audience. It's an above average film with some great direction and acted well. It's rather the poor scripting, tension and unbelievable ending + the new character setting off into the sunset to put the world to rights that lets the movie down. There are a few twists and turns but nothing out of the ordinary. Of course the format of the book itself was a nice surprise :-D. See if you want, but by making this a 5 of 5, you're classing it up there with movie greats like 2001 and Blade Runner.

Not Wanting To Spoil The Ending....the Book Of Eli

Not wanting to spoil the ending....The Book of Eli stars the lovely Denzel Washington set in what can only be described as the morning after the end of the world.

The film follows Denzel on his journey over coming adversity to complete his "quest". The movie is a visual delight and some shots could easily be pulled and displayed as wall art.

Another great Denzel movie and a must see (even if you wait until its out on DVD )
