The Skype for iPhone App lets you take many of the features of Skype out and about with you - but with a few restrictions.

The Skype instant messaging service works really well. Compared to some iPhone messaging Apps this is really fast, responsive and reliable.

The other main feature is Skype calling. You can call other Skype users or use SkypeOut to call anyone you like - but only if you have WiFi access. Yes this restricts its access a lot but are you surprised that O2 doesn't want to make it easy for you to use their expensive 3G network for free? And at the end of the day I get so many free minutes I wouldn't save any cash anyway.

Where I have found a massive benefit and saved lots of cash is when calling my friends abroad. My buddy in Canada also has an iPhone and Skype and we can call each other up for free and chat for ages at no cost with no need to be tied to a PC.

The voice quality is pretty decent although not quite up to the standard of a standard mobile call and the service seems reliable as long as your WiFi reception is good.

The App is free so no reason for you not to get it if you're a Skype user, particularly if you have friends and family abroad.
