“Old Professional Musician”

★★★★★

written by oldmuso on 26/12/2013

I've had my pair of Q15's stored in their original packing for nearly 10 years since moving house and had been using a pair of Tannoy floor standing speakers along with an Onix solid state amp, Pro-ject Debut 111 turntable with a Garrot P7 cartridge and Teac VRDS 10 CD player. I recently purchased a valve amp (from China ) and decided to try my KEFs again. What a revelation, after giving both the amp and speakers time to settle in the sound and detail along with imaging was marvelous.I listen mainly to Jazz and classical music and have been delighted with the natural sound of both instruments and voices, both male and female. I've read of some people being disappointed with the lack of deep bass and I agree that there is a steep roll off at I'm guessing about 50 hz but the bass is there in a more natural form, particularly on jazz recordings. If you play or listen to live jazz the bass is never to the forefront. As a result of this I've disgarded my Tannoys, put the KEFs on good stands and am a happy listener again.

“Very Good Speakers”

★★★★☆

written by Hallsyk on 11/04/2013

I must say that these are fantastic speaker, I had mine for just over six weeks and I bought them second hand on eBay after a friend recommendation, I spent 48 plus delivery for the pair and I really can't complain because price for quality I think I got a superb deal, obviously if you want to go and spend more you can get better, but again, as I said, price for quality this is as good as it gets.

“I just got these last week, once out of the box they...”

★★★★★

written by Daniel.Eastburn on 07/02/2013

I just got these last week, once out of the box they are quite large for bookshelf's weighing in at around 5kg, and the look of them is a little strange; at first they look like single driver designs, but a closer look reveals a tweeter positioned where a dust cap usually lies. The idea behind this is so that the sound is more pure, so that drivers are together as one instead of at different locations. Its a two way bass reflex design, with a 6.5" polypropylene woofer and smallish 19mm soft domed tweeter. The box measures 312 x 207 x 276mm (H x W x D), and has magnetic shielding for use next to a monitor. The rest of the specs can be found at KEF's web site. They look very attractive, with their real wood vinyl rapping, and black front baffle. They're good for most amps at 6 ohms and can take 100 watts. I hooked them up to my Marantz PM4000 amp, giving them 30 watts each channel. The sound is very good at first, but sound better after about 20 hours running in time. Bass weight is quite good for their 6.5 in woofer, and front port, reaching a respectable 47Hz. The tweeter, sound quite impressive too, even with the low power of my Marantz the sound filled my room size of 4 x 8m. I actually bought and extra pair of speaker cable to make use of the bi-wriable option with the KEF's. And to my surprise they opened up, the sound became full of atmosphere, even my heavy rock music started sounding like I was at a concert, move onto some mild pop and they delivery pretty good rhythm and speed. Using my PlayStation 2 as a CD player, the bass started becoming part of the music, rather tan separate, but it started getting muddy, and sloppy, not bad to the point of disappointment though. Drum beats and snare attacks started appearing in the music unlike before they were distant and muddied over by my previous Wharfedale £100 speakers. After the running in time, they do open up, but the treble begins to start sounding bright and ear painful, not much but it does effect music at high frequencies, somewhere in the 10KHz sector. Feed them some bi-wiring cable and they open up, place them on some solid stands and they deliver details never heard before. Bring them from the rear wall and the bass becomes less ploddy. If you experience a lack of bass, try placing them nearer a wall, as it increases bass, but too close and they could boom a lot. Feed them some classical and they handle the string and brass well, and clearly, and still they can handle dense rock mixes, bringing out each instrument with ease. Stereo separation is very good, toe them in for better imaging though. OVERALL Certainly worth a listen, I recommend a listen with your equipment, most Hi Fi store have a demo room, just bring along your kit and test these out with them. The sound is quite excellent, but some may want more low end tightness, while the high end can be a little uneasy. Still very accomplished and built speakers. OR TRY THESE If your after better, the only alternatives would be Mission M73 speaker coming in at £200 or $280, plus these offer better bass being a floorstander design. Another good choice would be Tangent Acoustic Monitor Eleven, you'd have a hard time finding them on Epinions butput the names in a search engine and they're bound to turn up. But if your after a bargain, but still hooked on KEF, try the KEF Cresta 2 at £150 or $210.

“Kef Q15 & Q15.2 - Buy 'em!”

★★★★☆

written by nugsy on 12/01/2013

I had to write a review for these speakers for anybody that may be interested in buying some. I have given 5 stars simply because they're the best I've had. I appreciate that there are better out there, but as I picked mine up for an average of £35 pair, they deserve no less than 5 stars. I have 5. 3 of which are the newer Q15.2 model. Originally I bought these to match my Q35's in a surround sound system and what a system! I have a Denon 7.1 amp to run them. I have read several reviews on the Q35's and Q15's. Almost all of these say that they're lacking in bottom end (bass) and nobody can fault the mid / highs.

They are stonking speakers without a doubt. What I have to add is this: I've found myself away from home for a while. Knowing that there were blown speakers where I was going, I packed my trusted Q15's. In this stereo setup, I'm using a Sony /CD player and an ARCAM DELTA 90 Amplifier. At 90w of sheer classic quality, this amp has done things for the Q15's that my Denon (a good make) just couldn't. It has highlighted to me that the Kefs are all they're cracked up to be. They produce plenty of bass for most music, but Drum n Bass? Add a sub. These aren't about sub bass, but then neither were my Bowers & Wilkins DM110's with their two 8" woofers each! To summarize, any review you read that's less than outstanding for the Kef Q15s (or Q35's) is probably the result of running them with an average amplifier, or less than average source. When married to the right equipment you just have to listen to all your music again to appreciate that Kef magic.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the speakers. If you don't intend using a high end amp, you may wish to consider others for a tad more bass?

Analogg's Response to nugsy's Review

Yes
After a lifetime of searching for the musical (hi fi) holy grail I have found it.
Been an avid audiophile for 50 years. Been to many hi fi expos and stores with my test cd and listened to class D to A equipment. I’ve owned many systems and love rock pop classical jazz and most music genres
In bands there is a chemistry that happens between musicians that defies explanation that explodes into a magic outcome of brilliant artistry and music.
No one warned me that this happens with audio equipment too. My basement studio described as the stonehenge by friends because of a mass of speakers and amps .
One afternoon I dug out a NAD 304 amp I’d tested previously with mission / B&W speakers and tried them with kef q35. Hmm not bad with nice mids and wide soundstage. Then ...................
Then I hooked up a pair of kef q15 to the NADs B terminals as well.
Holy friggin schemoly
3d music but not just depth and width but also the timbre of the instruments and ambience of the venue/ studio. Bass from Brandt Bjork and Led Zep hit me in the chest. Chrissie McVie soaring vocals way back in the room with Buckingham Nicks up close, Holst Planets with pin point spine tingling accuracy.
I had to go through all my cd’s and vinyl and still going discovering detail never heard before. Old vinyl compilations from 50’s 60’s70’s showing the amazing variations in recording / production.
At my ripe age I have finally discovered music Nirvana.

“Kef has made a great speaker with the Q15 superb bass...”

★★★★★

written by james roberts on 21/06/2009

Kef has made a great speaker with the Q15 superb bass and great clarity. top build with looks that are like or not like. The Q15 have good levels of detail and are strong in all departments. The speakers compared to mission 700 my main pair as my Q15 are in the bedroom sound a touch more transparent but not as full and weighty as the 700 but if you crave lots of detail and transparency its the Q15 " if a fuller and rhythmic sound the 700. Overall you can't get away from the fact that the Q15 have it all and excel in clarity.Top job to kef.
