I applied this product for fleas and as I have a black cat and a white cat this product took my nail varnish off my nails and covered my cat in it? Couldn't see it on black cat, obviously! What is in this stuff!!!?

“Do not use ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cate29 on 31/12/2022

It made my cat really unwell. She had diarrhoea, was sick, and wasn’t eating. Her personality changed and was very lethargic I was really worried. I washed it off her then she started to get a bit better. Really strong toxic chemicals wouldn’t advise to use…it could have ended up worse you don’t want to regret giving this to your beloved pet so use something else! I would rather deal with the fleas any day than use this stuff again.

“Do research before giving this to your Cat”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jimmyVZ on 15/01/2022

My Cat also had a very bad reaction to the Advocate for large cats spot on (she's 5kg) Not long after application she was hissing at me (totally out of character) and making really pained sounds. She also went on a long walkabout the next day (common to some other bad reactions I have read about online) and when she came back hours later she was off her food, shivery and not herself I have given her spot ons before with no bad reactions (not advocate) it just seems like the local vet switched to advocate recently and I will be asking some questions of them Looking online it seems that some Cats have a SEVERELY bad reaction to this particular spot on and in my opinion, Cat owners should be cautious with this remedy

“I almost killed my cats, at least one of them”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Zoska on 17/08/2021

Recommended by vet. Almost killed my cat. Without many details: salivating, vomiting with foam, lack of apetite, lethargic. Recovered after 48 hours, however, slight changes in behaviour, would not come back home for 11 hours today. And still ... was told by another vet to observe if any neurological symptoms would occure. After reading some reviews here I am getting anxious that my cat is not out of the woods yet as there could be more problems on the horizon even after two weeks. And the fleas??? Getting more bites as the days progress!

“DO NOT USE. Permanent neurological disturbances in cats”

★☆☆☆☆

written by hgHenderson259 on 10/12/2020

DO NOT USE! We regularly deworm our cats but the vet tried us with Advocate - let me tell you Advocate is not safe for our cats. After just one treatment it has permanently left them terrified, lethargic and depressed. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND LOOK FOR AN ALTERNATIVE, I wish we had, but it is too late now. This stuff is literally poison.

“Does not work for fleas.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by BenMeredith on 15/09/2020

We have used frontline to rid our cat of fleas as he had them when we got him. Signed up to a pet plan with the vet and they gave us advocate. The cat as if to show it doesn't work has within a week of application got fleas and brought them in to the house so we are both now suffering. Not sure how long to leave it before applying frontline again. The vet will be getting an ear full on our our next visit.

“Advocate does not work”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Graham178 on 25/11/2019

I had a flea problem and tried natural treatment first, I was finding one or two fleas every few days after 6 months of this so agreed to try a chemical treatment. I put it on my dogs for 6 months and didn’t check them- sure that it would work. One day I thought my son had headlice and then realised he had 3 fleas in his hair! He had been sat with the dogs. I checked them and they were literally crawling with fleas! 6 months of advocate and we had a major infestation. I believe fleas are becoming more and more resistant to chemical flea treatments. There’s no research done on this because vets and pharmaceutical companies make loads of money from these treatments so who’s going to do it? Frontline stopped working years ago and now others are too..... We’re risking our animals lives using more and more chemicals. Back to natural treatments for us which will be really hard work thanks to advocate failing.

“Advocate nearly killed our cat”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Moggyland on 28/09/2018

A few hours after treatment with Advocate for cats , our cat became very ill- later developing symptoms of neurological disturbance. He didnt seem to be aware of what was going on around him as he continued circling, stumbling & bumping into things. Later, he started convulsing. he then went rigid,& i thought he had died.We rushed him to our vet,but took him home to keep under observation following n anti-inflammatory injection. Three days later he had started to improve rapidly.

“Never again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/03/2018

I have never liked using any of these flea spot ons on my cats as I know they are powerful neurotoxins. Several of our cats have responded negatively to Frontline, Advantage and Advocate. Others have not. However we have a Bengal on chemo and steroids and our vet told us when we saw her with Cleo this week and she found a flea on her that if Cleo was hers she would use the Advocate. Fleas can carry blood parasites which are particularly dangerous to cats on high doses of steroids as we already knew as we lost our precious Bear cat to that. So today reluctantly we applied the correct Advantage pipette on both Cleo and Llewi (Persian/BirmanX) 13 and 12 years old respectively and at the correct place on the back of the neck. Cleo seems absolutely fine but within minutes Llewi was agitated, flicking his tail and running around with his belly to the floor shaking his head and blinking. He ran out the front and I followed him. For 15 minutes he ran around as if trying to run away from himself and wouldn't let me near him. He was drooling excessively all down his front and was looking at me as if to say 'Why have you done this to me?' He kept lying down and then getting up and trying to run away from himself again. When he eventually came back in and up the stairs I picked him up and stroked him under the chin and on his front where he had been drooling thick strings of sticky saliva and my hands literally stunk of chemicals. We washed it off him and I will NEVER use Advocate/Advantage again. Our vets have all told us drooling and watering eyes are just a reaction to the carrier. Rubbish - these powerful chemicals get into the bloodstream very quickly (as Bayer themselves admit). While some cats don't seem to react at all others definitely do and reading the reviews here applying this stuff seems to be playing Russian Roulette with your cat's life and I will never do that again. I'm going to refer my vets to this site. Advocate/Advantage is not safe. Period.

“Possibly some cats are allergic?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ataloss on 01/03/2018

I am a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews. We had two kittens 5 months old (not related). Applied Advocate to both. During the night they ripped open a pack of catnip. The next morning one vomited up a lot of catnip and also clear fluid. He was very listless all day and slept in one spot most of the time, we thought he was 'hung over' from the catnip. In the evening he was very floppy and seemed to have trouble with his back legs when walking a few steps. This was Saturday night. I tried to give him some water. He slept in the bedroom all night, gave him more water at 5am. He curled up and made no attempt to move. At 8am he died without waking. Vet said it sounded as if he had eaten something toxic but we have not used any poisons in the house or garden apart from small amount of cockroach spray. The other cat is fine.

“Very unhappy cat”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bennettnk22 on 29/07/2017

I have used Advocate on my 2 cats recently as advised by the vet. Other treatments were not effective at that time. The first couple of times, both cats were 'low' for a couple of days, I put it down to sulking. The last time I used it, about a week ago, one cat is ok, but the other has been very poorly ever since. She is not eating, her behaviour has changed dramatically, she looks at me listlessly & appears depressed. She has always been a very lively, sociable cat, she usually visits all the neighbours & is a regular customer at the local shop. At the moment, she can't summon the energy or motivation to get up from her bed. I am very worried about her & would not attempt to use Advocate again. This stuff is not cheap, it may kill fleas, but it appears to be highly damaging to my cat.

“Burned My Cats Fur”

★☆☆☆☆

written by uaRegan347 on 06/10/2016

We use Advocate regularly for our 3 year old cat without any issues. I like that it treats heart worm and other parasites that are not treated with other products. However, we treated him 2 days ago and within a few hours we noticed a bald patch where we had placed the drops. His skin was exposed and looking very irritated. His fur had fallen out! I feel terrible that I have put him through this. We trusted this product would be helping him NOT harming him. I read in other reviews that Advocate can cause death! What do they put in this stuff? I will follow up with the company to place a formal complaint and advise as many people as possible to keep their pets safe from this toxic and dangerous product. DO NOT USE

“Afraid to use agaain”

★☆☆☆☆

written by asMunn298 on 21/05/2016

My cat is 10 years old, just. I don't use flea treatment very often as she is a stay at home cat,her choice. We are putting her in a cattery so used Advocate, have used it on her before with no problems, this time she has not been herself very bad twitching down her back which causes her to dash about and lick and bite herself. Her head and paws twitch too at separate times, been sick and is very loose when she uses her tray.We have been very worried about her, she is very nervous too. We're on the verge to a visit to the vet, but,I think, she may be a bit improved. There must be something in this product that is having such adverse effects on so many cats. I don't think I can use it again as she is getting older it could be worse.

I won't be using Advocate again either. My cat now has a bald patch where I applied it and my 2 Chihuahuas were completely wiped out for 24 hours after treatment. I was worried sick! I trusted the vets to give my pets the treatment I pay for but I feel ripped off.

“Would not risk using Advocate again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Leonardos151 on 05/05/2016

My vet prescribed Advocate. Unfortunately, after the first administration, my 8 year old cat changed from being lively and fun-loving to only wanting to lie on my bed. He stared fearfully and flinched at nothing as if he was seeing things. He also suffered from some tremors in his paws. At one stage he was lying sadly on his back as if all his life-force was spent with just his paws twitching and I thought I was going to lose him. This lethargy lasted for about 8 days. Thank goodness after that he seemed to recover his normal activity levels, but he must have felt awful for over a week. I hope there will be no long-term affects on his vital organs or nervous system. I would never risk giving this treatment again, because I fear that a repeat dose could be fatal.

“Was it Advocate, you decide”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Shields280 on 24/04/2016

We administered Advocate as prescribed by our vet to our 2 young cats 3 weeks before boarding them at a cattery. The first 2 weeks seemed fine, but they had a low appetite which was unusual for our 2 very active cats. The day before we were to board our cats, one of our cats became very unwell with a high fever, he was lethargic and could barely move, his belly had become very swollen as well. We rushed him to hospital where they discovered his bowel was shutting down. He was given meds to empty his bowel, had many tests and had to stay overnights, and he still hasn't recovered completely. Our other cat is starting to have the same symptoms, but we are following the vets orders and prescriptions for now. More testing will follow as to why all of a sudden our strictly indoor never been outdoors/around other cats, young, healthy, active, good eaters/poopers suddenly became so sick. Our cats did not have fleas or worms, but it was suggested to give them the Advocate as we were putting them in a cattery. I wish we had just taken the chance and never had given them this drug. It has cost us so much money and heartache, I'm just glad that we have pet insurance, but we still don't know if our cat will get better completely, or will he always need a special medicine to help his bowel? Was it a coincidence or was it the Advocate?

We're having the same problems with our 12yr old cat. We took her to the vets for a flea/ worm consultation the vet said that ADVOCATE was the best to use. So as we had used it before we went with it. The vet commented how healthy the cat looked for her age. Well. That's were the problems started after the first aplication the cat slowly lost her apitite, really lathargic, panting, extremely bad diarrhea. She's now had 2 lots of antibiotics 1 lot of penicillin she's lost 1/4 of her body weight. Tomorrow we are taking her to have a scan of her stomach an maybe a 2nd lot of blood tests. It's so sad to see her so I'll. I would preferre her to have fleas than be as poorly as she is. So please don't use AVOCATE Even if you have used it before.

“Do not use”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 450Kane on 22/02/2016

A dose of Advocate for Cats was administered to my cat by the Vet duriong a routine yearly check. When I took my cat to the Vets she was healthy and lively as usual. After returning home my cat went to sleep and slept for several hours. When she woke up she was listless and unsteady on her back legs and was finding it difficult to walk. It only lasted a day and I reported it to the Vet.Who of corse was none commital. When I looked it up on line I was shocked to see that so many people had had similar things happen to their pets. I will never use this product again.

I took my cat to the vet as she had an allergic reaction to frontline. My vet recommended Advocate. She hasn't stopped scratching and licking since. Her fur is falling out all over and she is bald on her tummy. The fur she still has is dull and she is very lethargic Would never use this product again

Hi, can i ask how you got it sorted for your puss cat please. Mine is very poorly first dose of Advocate he was fine, day after second dose, he's dreadful, don't know what to do :( Vet wants huge amounts of money to do blood tests etc., but I think it's her fault..she gave my Smokey A1 health and he's a house cat so no danger of picking anything up outside :/ I blame the vet entirely for this :(

My cat is doing exactly the same thing. To begin with I thought she had fleas ! but then I thought well how could she when she doesn't go out and has had the advocate so I thought that I would review the product. Can I ask how long this lasts and what the final outcome is ? Hope your cat is ok now.

Every time I use it he starts throwing up his food for a couple of days and this last time he has a bald patch of fur where it had been placed. I will stop using it but it's annoying as I have 3 tubes left and it's not cheap. Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes very! Get her to the vet ASAP. I won't even use this stuff on my adult cat as it burnt her as though I'd poured acid on her!!! Personally I think it should removed from the market
