I really think that when you book half board at this hotel, you should be advised that you are not allowed to have any kind of drinks with your evening meal unless you pay for it,not even water‼ and that is over €2.Had this been pointed out,I never would have booked, terrible.

“We stayed at Hotel Melia in Benidorm for our...”

written by Ceylonsky on 28/10/2007

We stayed at Hotel Melia in Benidorm for our honeymoon. It wasn't great. The restaurant, we ate there for 2 evenings and one lunch only. The food was served COLD and there was no warming it up with the gravy as this is cold also! Strangely enough the soup was quite hot though. So if you like soup and icecream for evening meal every day then you're onto a winner. Breakfast is pretty lukewarm too - other than the omelette's which are made in front of you but expect a 50/50 mix of olive oil and egg - not for the faint hearted.
One of the hotel reps tried saying it was a 'Spanish thing' that food is served cold. Well I have stayed in other Spanish Hotels and eaten at Spanish Restaurants and I have never experienced food served practically from the fridge in this way before. If Direct Holidays are marketing this hotel to English clientelle then they should state on their website that if you book this hotel to expect food served in the 'Spanish Tradition'. The restaurant is also pretty hectic so be prepared to get stuck in clearing tables and chasing after waiters in order to be served with drinks.

Reception is very hectic too. Checkout day was horrendous and, once served, we asked what we do with our cases only to be abruptly told ' find a porter'. We found him after about 15 minutes. Check-in took approximately 20mins when the receptionist dealing with us disappeared into a back room, eventually emerging to tell us computer problems - what was wrong with popping out and telling us the situation during this time? Poor customer service.

Room was adequate size, bathroom nice and clean, but coffee stains all over walls and dust on furniture. We are people who do not demand perfection but this for a 4 star hotel? Maids were obviously understaffed but did make a good job of tidying rooms/making beds and very friendly.
Had great views on the 22nd floor also.
During our stay someone next door checked out and left the telly on full blast. We returned late that evening and spoke to the night guard on reception and he was fantastic - he had someone turn the TV off within 5mins.

The safe in the room is free - it works by inputting your own security code to enable access/closure. We put all our valuables, including our English money in there from day one. On the fourth day of our holiday we took out, for the first time, two bundles of English money in order to exchange for Euro's. We found £10 missing from one bundle and £20 missing from another. There is absolutely no doubt this money was taken as I had clearly written in each location exactly how much money each source contained (for budgeting purposes) and I had done this on the day we got there. Although these weren't great amounts we were absolutely mortified - at no point did we ever leave the safe unopened. We complained to the holiday rep and we filled a complaint form in but I don't imagine a great deal of action will be taken. So here's our advice:

a) Take a small combi-lock cash tin - and put valuables in here then put in the safe. This way no small amounts of money can be taken without notice, ie without cash tin taken or broken.

b) Don't do as we did and put the 'please make up our room' card on the door handle, obviously making it clear you are out.

If you are staying at this hotel and, like us, will be eating out every day I can recommend two nearby restaurants/pubs:

Bar Siroco - We ate there for the last two evenings and wish we had found it sooner! Lovely ambience, soft lighting, light background music and extremely friendly staff! We ate steak on both occasions which was cooked to perfection and the accompanying foods, salad, veg, cheesy tomato made it an exceptionally nice meal - very reasonable at 15 euro's each. This restaurant is situated on the main road towards the beach on the right hand side.

Ye Olde Tavern - situated just across from the Hotel. Good old English Pub with friendly staff (especially Becky) and served a lovely English breakfast with proper bacon and sausage!

Would I recommend this hotel? No.
