Had 1 then motor burnt out and second time using it had to pay £15 to be sent a second one. used it once and sparks in the motor began and burning smell reported it to be told another £15 to be sent a new one . Used it twice and know water pump given up and the warranty has know run out so I bought it for £169 then two lots of £15 to be sent utter rubbish so massively out of pocket to be told warranty run out and I can get a new one for £100 . Thanks vax but I don't think so Would avoid at all cost .

“RUBBISH AND SHOCKING - AVOID!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jimmypunter on 27/02/2015

Bought one of these things in ARGOS and the switch packed in after 6 months. ARGOS refused to replace it and told me to contact VAX. Thanks ARGOS! VAX replaced the machine to their credit. Credit where it's due. Six months down the line the replacement started smoking and sparking. Contacted VAX - as the original machine's warranty had expired so has the one for the replacement despite it being only six months old. The machine is not over-used, it is not maltreated and is emptied daily. The build quality is shocking. The on/off switch will inevitably pack-in at some point as it is so flimsy. Just very poor all round. Avoid VAX. We are now dumping this fairly new machine at the dump and going for a DYSON.

“what have they done??”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Erikl444 on 14/05/2014

I purchased one of these about a month ago, april 2014....to replace the same product we purchased a few years ago that has had a bit of rough treatment and cheaper to replace than try to get repaired..... we looked at several alternatives, including the one with no bag...but that got poor reviews, so we decided to go for another vax....what a mistake... amazing...we grow up with sayings...like...if it aint broke, dont fix it...but vax have tried to fix it...what a mistake... the electric lead is longer, which i dont need, it was the right length, the material use on the lead means it tangles, unlike the old one which didnt...! the cleaning/hoovering head, the bit that goes on the floor...is awful...it used to have amazing suction, now gone because its been re designed and now has a gap on each side, presumably to provide side suction...but this just means its sucking in air...!...what a mistake...dear oh dear... the bit you hold that fits in to the downpipe is badly designed and badly attached to the flexible pipe so its mostly at an odd angle, meaning its wieldy to use....terrible.... they have increased the length of the flexible pipe attaching the down pipe to the machine....too long...also, the material its made of means it doesnt wrap well around the machine like the old one used to.... i will have to put up with this for the next few years....but i wont be buying another one....ever...vax have ruined it, well done...probably re designing it to make it cheaper and cheaper...mistake....it WAS a great hoover...now its just a has been...

“Disappointed”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bruised on 24/06/2012

Suction is poor on the standard head does the middle but not the edges...the s/s extenders need to be forcibly put on or they drop off whilst vaccuming, if put on forcibly you cannot get them off... on carpet cleaning, the head sprays forcibly in the middle an ish ish on the sides (as spray head sprays in 3 seperate directions so leaving dry streaks) so have to keep going over the same area to wet all the carpet, the centre as so powerful drowns the carpet in that area, the water tank lasts for approx 2 sq feet of carpet ( 5 minutes), which as now saturated takes 10mins to suck up water. The electric flex has no decernable place to live so you wind it around the body of the machine there is a tiny orange plastic hook that is supposed to secure it, which is ineffectual so comes undone and plug invaribly hits you on th ankle. All in all I would not recommend to any-one.

“Only one in its class/price but let down by poor parts”

★★★★☆

written by on 09/05/2012

It works very well as a cleaner and carpet vac. Very powerful. There is no other carpet washer at this price. Incredibly useful for stairs and car as well as other tasks like cleaning cat poo off cushions, mattresses after child "accidents" etc. Would not do without it. Downsides: - heavy - noisy - o rings in wash attachments cannot be replaced by vax (they perish) and are not a standard size. Nearest replacements from hardware store nearly fitted but make push fittings hard to get apart. - fiddly to set up in wash mode - pump switch has failed (not really a problem, just always on). - lid bolts came loose (fixed easily myself) - stair upholstery fitment became easily blocked. Had to pull apart with pliers to clean. - could do with a curved stair attachment to get edges done properly. Bear in mind with all of this I have had it years and use it frequently.

“After 20 years Looking for another one”

★★★★★

written by Abishop on 08/07/2011

I purchased my Vax in the late 1980's early 1990's, and used it for many years. I then decided to get a Dyson, which everyone was shouting about, and although the Dyson was fine, it wasn't a patch on my Vax. So my Dyson stayed upstairs for bedroom use, and my trusty old vax came back downstairs and remained brilliant for many more years. Now it's suction is failing a bit, maybe I could get it some new filters and give it an overall, but I think it's time for a new one. I hope it's every bit as good as the last. A fantastic machine.

“I have a Power 3 Vax 1900 watts 280 air watts cleaner. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/08/2010

I have a Power 3 Vax 1900 watts 280 air watts cleaner.
Weaknesses
1, To empty the vax is the worst feature as I cannot empty the cilinder without getting coverd in dust. The instruction tell me not to brush out the filter, but you cannot get it empyted with out. This i would like to have known before purchase.
2.To turn the wheel on the vax to change for the hight of the pile ,is very stiff.
3. I have to tie the lead up to the top of the vax because I keep stepping on the lead.
4. The hose is too short and very awkward to use.
5. The whole machine is top heavy and falls over very easily.,

“Advantages: Simple to use. Inexpensive. Great results. ”

★★★★★

written by mahalir on 30/06/2010

Advantages: Simple to use. Inexpensive. Great results.

Disadvantages: Bulky, heavy machine. Difficult to store neatly.

I bought my Vax 6131 back in October 2007 after my old upright vacuum cleaner finally gave up the ghost. I was searching for a new replacement upright vacuum cleaner but after stumbling across the Vax 6131 on special offer I decided a wet and dry vacuum that also shampoos carpets would be really handy, especially with a dog and cat in the house!

The Vax 6131 is a cylinder or canister vacuum cleaner that as well as being used as an ordinary dry vacuum cleaner, can also suck up wet spills and shampoo your carpet.

***DRY VACUUMING***

I use my Vax 6131 mainly as an everyday, ordinary vacuum cleaner and I've found it does the job well. It comes supplied with a standard hose and vacuum head. The head has a simple switch for 'brushes down' for hard floor vacuuming and 'brushes up' for carpets.
It is powered by a 1300w motor which is ample amount for picking up loose dirt from my carpet, it does however struggle when it comes to picking up dog and cat hair. Whilst the Vax 6131 removes the majority of the hair, I find I have to go back and pick up the stubborn bits with the crevice tool. Overall the Vax 6131 performs as well as other cylinder vacuums I have used but if you have hairy pets I wouldn't recommended you rely on it as your everyday vacuum.

As well as the standard head the Vax 6131 comes with a small brush head, an upholstery tool and a crevice tool. I tend to use the crevice tool for everything I can't do with the large head! It is great for sucking around awkward furniture, along skirting boards and getting cobwebs down from the ceiling...aswell as the stubborn pet hairs of course! There is nowhere to store the tools on the vax so it can be a little inconvenient to have to search around for the tool you need when you suddenly spot a giant cobweb overhead!

The vax uses ordinary dust bags which can be purchased from most major supermarkets aswell as from hardware shops. They cost around £4 for 5 bags.

***WET VACUUMING***

The Vax 6131 takes a little bit of setting up before it can be used as a wet vacuum or carpet shampooer. Firstly the motor has to be removed to expose the filter and dust chamber. This is very simple and does not need superhuman strength! It is just a matter of undoing two small clips. Then the dust bag and filter are removed and replaced with the clean water tank. The vacuum head also needs to be changed for the wet head. The Vax is then ready to be used for wet vacuuming.

I must admit I do not use this function very often. I find there is too much hassle involved dragging out such a big, cumbersome machine and setting it up just for the odd spill! I have used it a few times though and found it works a treat. The head provided for wet vacuuming is clear and so you can see the liquid lifting out of the carpet and shooting up the vacuum head! It left the carpet slightly damp but the majority of the liquid had gone and was waiting in the dirty water tank for me to empty.

***CARPET SHAMPOOING***

To set the Vax up for carpet shampooing just takes a little more setting up. The clean water tank needs to be filled up with warm water and carpet shampoo (as directed on the shampoo bottle). There is a small clear plastic pipe provided with the Vax which must be plugged in at the cylinder and the other end at the vacuum head. The pipe pushes in simply and easily and there are clips to tidily attach it to the hose so it doesn't fall in your way when you are cleaning the carpet. Overall the set up is very simple and only takes around 5 minutes at the most.

Once set up the vax is very simple to use as a carpet shampooer. There are two large buttons on the top of the cylinder. One is for vacuuming and one is for dispensing water and shampoo. I find the best way to clean the carpets is to have both buttons depressed to begin with. This makes the carpet wet and removes most of the dirty water from the carpet straight away. Then I switch off the water dispensing button and just have the vax vacuuming. This takes off the rest of the water and shampoo and leaves the carpet only slightly damp. Within a few hours after cleaning them my carpets had dried out completely.

The Vax holds 4 Litres of clean water and shampoo so you can do a medium sized room without having to refill the machine.
The dirty water is sucked into a 8 litre dirty water tank which again is large enough for you to not have to empty it every ten minutes!

Emptying the dirty water tank is not an overly nice job and I was shocked at the colour of the water the first time I cleaned my carpets! One thing worth mentioning is that the dirty water tank is also where the dust bag sits during dry vacuuming so it needs to be thoroughly dried, otherwise the dust bag becomes damp and falls apart when you need it.
Overall I was very pleased with the results of the carpet cleaner. It brightened them up nicely and left them smelling clean and fresh. One of the joys of this machine is that it is so simple to use and it doesn't take ages to set up so it's as useful for small stains on carpets as it is for large area cleaning.

***PROBLEMS***

There are a few frustrating things I have found when using the Vax 6131. The major problem is the size and weight of the machine (especially when full of water). It is very bulky and can be hard to manoeuvre around the house. In particular I struggle with the stairs as the hose is not long enough to reach the middle stairs in my home as it does not stretch and the cylinder is far too big to sit on a step without falling. I've also found that, as the hose is connected to the cylinder quite high up, the whole vacuum topples over when I pull the hose.
The power lead is of a good length and I can do the whole house stopping only a few times to find a closer socket. I do find the lead gets in my way when I'm vacuuming as it's not retractable and so the whole length of the flex is on the floor. When it comes to packing the vax away, the leads has to wrap around and around the machine which isn't very neat and is generally just not as convenient as a retractable flex. However, these problems are not too hard to live with and you would be hard pressed to find another machine that performs so well at vacuuming and cleaning carpets for under £100.

Overall I would recommend the VAX 6131 for anybody that would like to give their carpets a little freshen up. It obviously doesn't perform as well as a heavy duty carpet cleaner like a Rugdoctor but there is a noticeable diiferece in carpets once they have been shampooed with the Vax 6131. I have not had any problems with the motor or body of the vacuum since I've had it and it feels nicely robust so with a bit of luck my vax will be keeping my carpets clean for many more years to come!

I bought the VAX 6131 for £100 from Argos. I was lucky enough to get it on special offer but the machine are available directly from VAX at vax.co.uk

the vax 6131 i got as an x-display and got some spare parts 2 wheels and vent guard, the service was good.
i find it robust and powerful, just a shame that you can't use it without a bag like the vax 121 or a numatic, but it is adequate for me in the workshop.

After reading good reviews on this vax 6131 vacuum i purchased VAX 7131 in black. The vacuum looks great and the carpet wash works excellent. I have owned this vacuum for just over a year and i am getting very fraustrated with the hose connection, (where you connect the plastic hose to the metal tube) it just keeps working itself loose no matter how hard i try to push the two parts together they end up apart. Has anyone else encoutered this problem with this machine? I am now going to buy an upright vacuum as i am so frustarted with this product.

i bought the mach7 model particularly for the extra length hose however
it is very difficult to use, the hose feels like it is straining to return o its position on the cleaner therefore im struggling to keep it in position. i think it would have been much better if it had a button like the electric cord so when i have extended it ,it will stay loose until i want to return it i am worn out after using it fighting to vacumm wfeeling as though its attached to strong elastic

This Vax 6131 is the daddy of all carpet cleaners, the best brushless shampoo you can get. It does clean anything off anything - including oil off a car seat. I would recommend using the Vax brand shampoos.

Vax service is excellent; if anything goes wrong, they will help with parts, prompt delivery, and a list of local agents if you can't fix it yourself.

Unfortunately, it is as ugly as a slapped fish, completely unsubtle, very, very noisy, and big enough to get in the way.

I have checked all parts for blockages and found none. What is the problem with this Vax? The motor seems to be overheating all the time and I need to be able to use it. Please can you help?
