“Another excellent meal”

Went for our daughters birthday and once again The Stonehouse didn't disappoint. Our meals were outstanding and the staff as always are friendly and cannot do enough for you. I would recommend this place to anyone.

“Unprofessional ”

Unhelpful staff, late to the appointment, and ignored my questions. Thank you very much for your slow and terrible help, as I wouldn't choose Stonehouse in the future anymore and it'll save so much time. There's no way of doing business without any effort.

“Go Somewhere else !”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/08/2015

We have gone to The Stone House on several occasions hoping to see some improvement of any kind but it seems that is not going to happen. The interior used to be well cared for and very clean but now it has dirty chairs, sticky unwiped tables, and dirty cutlery. Mid-week the food is very reasonable if you choose the " Two For One " option. We ordered the steak but it was just as bad as it was on our previous visit so we failed to eat it yet again. So enough is enough, theyve had their chance to impress and theyve failed miserably. The staff seem to wander in and out of the kitchen area just as they please, i'm sure it was party time. I thought there were certain rules and regulations which covered the catering business..eg gloves, hair, handwashing persons going in and out of the kitchen in dirty clothes etc...but no one seemed to practise these guidelines where are the hygiene inspectors?.. anyway I think it is time to go elsewhere as there are much better places to eat.

“Value for money”

★★★★☆

written by Katrina352 on 31/07/2014

The stone house serves Pub food so yes it's not to restaurant standards but its great value for money. The service does vary based on the staffing levels on the day - but in general the food is good and cheap - where else can you get 14oz gammon and a desert or starter for £8.00 If you want fancy linen and candels then this is not the place but for good home style cooked food then this place is as good as other pub restaurants.

“Dreadful - getting worse”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/12/2012

The Stonehouse is a Jekyll and Hyde establishment. By day it makes its money catering for local offices with its food offerings. As long as your expectation with regard to quality is not too high, you will get a reasonable meal for a very low price and It's friendly enough. However, if it relied on its livelihood as a pub it would more than likely close in a very short period of time. The reason is simple, they do not seem to see the correlation between managing unruly customers and the fact that there is ever only a handful of people in there passed 8 pm. New customers are likely be met by persons smoking, swearing and generally being anti-social in the smoking area which is situated immediately outside the main entrance which creates an intimidating 'welcome'. Inside there are frequent 'disturbances' and most alarmingly the perpetrators are back in there the following night. The message that is sent out is that there is no consequence to being and acting like a moron. The net result though is that new customers who experience such behaviour leave the premises and do not return. It is perplexing why Mitchell's and Butler do not realise what is going on and take appropriate action.

“An experience I do not wish to repeat”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Littlerobs1 on 15/08/2011

We took my parents to this pub for a meal yesterday (Sunday lunch) and I have never had such a poor dining experience. The place doesn't feel clean - the staff were unfriendly - the atmosphere was dreadful - and the food quality was shocking. My husbands meal was inedible (how can a burger be so badly prepared?) and he was given a refund; my dads steak was chewy and tough. My mum and I had the Roast chicken dinner - the chicken was good but the vegetables (of which there were few) were overcooked mush. The menus feel dirty to the touch - cigarette butts all over eth floor by teh main entrance. It is a truly awful place.

“The Stonehouse has improved greatly since I started...”

★★★★★

written by on 02/05/2010

The Stonehouse has improved greatly since I started visiting last year. Other reviews have said about children not being welcome unless they're with their dad. This is absolute rubbish! I have been on many visits where the bar staff are very friendly towards the children regardless of who they are with. The only time I've known there be an issue is where there have been children running around the pub but all that happened was the children being asked to sit down. Rightly so when there is hot food being carried around, nobody wants to see a scalded child! Child menu has been brought in too so this is a bonus.
The food is tasty, hasn't always been admittedly particularly the steaks, they can be fatty but any problems are sorted efficiently. Staff are all very pleasant and willing to help. If this place is as bad as some people are making out, why is it always rammed on the weekend, particularly Sundays when I visit with my family! Enough said!

First and last time at this pub.You could hardly get through the dorr for smokers/swearers/and youths tossing a Rugby ball. The interior dreary. The Barmaid has obviously never heard of customer contact and was in Robotic mode. Our two baked potatoes with fresh green salad took some 20 mins to arrive, noting that people after us had ordered and got their meals. It was a medium sized potatoe and the fresh salad was coated in rusty brown ends throughout, definitely not fresh, and the potatoe luke warm and burnt on the underside. This was a dyre experience and visits from the owners and other bodies wouldn't go a miss . One to avoid at all costs.

and i would like to say i have been there two-three times before and i was happily satisfied with their food.
but very poor! there inst any good points to be honest, only that the waiter changed my stake to a higher standard one.. still not great, and she apologized

1st time visit, sticky tables and unfriendly service I feel from my experience, nothing attractive about this pub in my opinion, but the food was excellent, although a bit pricey for me.
I would not visit again though.

“I came across The Stonehouse in Newport by accident. ...”

★★★☆☆

written by Welsh Foodie on 14/08/2007

I came across The Stonehouse in Newport by accident. I work near the M4, on an industrial estate with little opportunity for decent pub lunches locally, and I thought I'd try The Stonehouse, as it's only a mile or so away. It's a tough place to find amidst various roads, connecting roads and more connecting roads, and it is effectively in a fairly unattractive spot, near what looks like a fire station.

But, first things first. The car park is a bit small and obsessed with "disabled parking bays". In fact, the majority of them appear to be reserved. This, with its location, didn't fill me with hope.

On entry, the place had decent decor, a very long large bar area and an unobvious divide between the "bar" and "restaurant", which confused me. I had no idea where to sit. So having chosen a table near a TV (I was dining alone and don't mind a bit of footy / news on Sky over lunch), I rejected the "bar snack" menu and went in search of a proper menu.

I must say that I'd noticed that this place was part of the "Sizzling" chain, which I've tried on numerous occasions, so I knew what to expect.

I was ignored by the first waitress and eyed suspiciously by the barman / waiter, who clearly didn't expect "strangers" on a Tuesday lunchtime. Order made, I settled down with a paper and the news.

Other clients were clearly locals, and there were very many of them. We had a group of men who looked like firemen, some older couples, and mixed family groups (it's school holiday time). The place itself is huge, so despite it being quite busy, I was happy in my comparative un-bothered solitude.

My "small" steak (only 4oz) arrived promptly, and for once it was actually cooked medium. I'm nervous in these places that well-done translates as "burnt" and rare means "raw", so I thought I'd stay safe and order medium.

I was amazed also how tasty the steak was. I'd ordered oodles of English Mustard as a precaution, but for once I needed very little. It was also lean, and just enough for lunch.

The chips were a bit soggy, and the compulsory onions and tomato could have done with being added to cook sooner, but they were fine.

Generally, not somewhere I'd make a detour for, but a handy place for a cheap lunch. The small steak and a large glass of house dry white wine came in at a pleasing £6.35, which suited me fine.
