I Am Not A Member Of Linkedin, Or Ever Want To Be,
I am not a member of Linkedin, or ever want to be, but somehow they have got my e-mail address and giving it, by way of recommendation to their members to contact me. Linkedin must have obtained my e-mail address by illegal methods. I cannot contact them but I believe linkedin have an office in central London. Possibly Regent or Oxford street. I hate these people and would gladly kill, yes kill them for all the bother they have caused me.

Linkedin Hook Ups
My soon-to-be ex-husband has used LinkedIn as a means of looking up potential women with whom he could solicit affairs. Sadly, he succeeded at least twice that I know of, but attempted many more. I know this isn't a reflection of the site itself or the majority of its users, but if your spouse uses this site be aware of who they are connected with. I wish I had been. If something doesn't make sense then get suspicious. For example, if a pharmacist is 1st level contact with an HR manager at a logistics company chances are they have nothing in common professionally so why would one recommend said pharmacist in areas of expertise they know nothing about? The next thing you know there are hang up calls from private phone numbers on the house phone and calls from Arizona on the cell phone bill. After some snooping I found their private messages to each other planning my divorce and their marriage! Needless to say I deleted my profile and will never reactivate it because I don't need that level of humiliation.

Best For Connecting With Professionals
LinkedIn is great for connecting with business professionals around the globe and to create new leads and contacts that could help you improve your business either through sales or just with expert help.
I would recommend signing up to any professional company or sole trader.

It appears that this organization somehow gets into your contact list and sends invitations to your contacts. I am getting replies from people from my contacts that I never sent an invitation to. I don't trust them.

Best Of The Bunch For Professional Networking. Jus
Best of the bunch for professional networking. Just ignore unwanted invitations (if you are weak, simply accept and then dump them later - no alert is sent to the connection!). Sadly it is starting to be flooded by "Hi, I'm Bill I'm an engineer, please join my network" type posts. Some of the professional groups are well moderated and kept clear of the social/recruitment posts. On balance LinkedIn can be a good source of private work and job offers.

A good way to expand and keep in touch with business contacts.
The site navigation can be difficult. Very text heavy format which floods the page.

Generally, I Don't Like Social Network Sites. This
Generally, I don't like social network sites. This is the stuff of a new generation, and good luck to them - sitting at a terminal and telling the world what you are doing (which, by definition, is "nothing", if you are at your computer... ).
I do, however, accept and try to exploit the value of professionally-focused network/contact sites. For me, linkedin is probably the best of the bunch. It may not be the longest-running and there are others like Xing that have superior functionality and arguably a neater interface, but it has the best overall functionality and "feel" to it, and the 50 scrillion users it has must indicate something (beyond the fact that its free).
Some key notes are:
- network trawling, search, and invitations to connect are thoughtfully provided, simple to use, and effective
- recommendations, referrals, groups, etc. all provide that sensible niche categorization you need when either trying to look for a job, a candidate, an answer to a question, etc.
- the profile is nicely layed-out, has a sensible set of sections, and is a good way to force you to take your "public image" seriosuly. The PDF copy feature is neat because it effectively helps you build a CV for yourself without thinking.
The rest of the site is much the same as xing, plaxo and a bunch of others, and it is a web based contact management system which allows you to bug your mates by emailing them and asking them to join. Some folk just spend their time collecting names and just "being on the site", whereas others will put it to use, and breathe life into the site by posting Q's and A's etc. Generally, linkedin has a better level of interaction of postings than other sites, and the quality tends to be high (apart from the occasional hijack).
If you are any kind of professional and want to use a portable method of managing contacts and perhaps getting your foot in the door with new folk or opportunities, you could do a lot worse than spend an hour or two on linkedin to build up a decent profile.
Finally, I used to have the site crash on me a lot - they seem to have fixed that now. It's a pretty robust engine, which is encouraging considering the amount of traffic it must get.
Good site, worth joining.
