I have had my rac 2000 for some 18 months now, and although I do not use it much, when I have it has performed very well, and has not led me to strange places, it is accurate and I use a female voice which does not get on my nerves. the only thing that bothers me, I that I cannot charge it up on my computer, as I have lost the disk, if there ever was one to set up a charging programme etc. otherwise I generally leave it in the car on charge,(hidden) of course. I am very happy with it. it was very inexpensive, compared to two others I have had, and they did not serve me well. cheers john W.

Absolute waste of money and a big disappointment. It appears Everything that could go wrong with this system has gone wrong, the on off button broke, system shut down completely, cradle broke, charger refused to work even after fuse change, now finally the internal speaker has broke and i have been told its beyond repair. The customers services mananger further added insult to injury by stating that my formal letter of complaint was copied from "somehere", insinuating i was unable to write a proffessional letter ! What a waste of time and money along with patronising evasive customer service ! Its not worth the one star i have awarded it !

You get what you pay for. Reading the manual helps overcome minor setup irritations and using a bit of common sense, RAC 200 GPS gets you from A to B.

Lost the signal to often. make stupid failure. want me to turn off the motorway and then back again in opposite direction, to next jct., and then back again in right direction. Other time want me to turn off motorway, and then back again in same jct.
Change to other 2 times in the first 5 weeks.
1,. time suddenly died, after 2 weeks completely death.
2. 3 weeks later the new one couldn charge.
It was stolen from me for 1 weeks ago. LOL
Good luck with it, new owners.

Picks up speed cameras that are on other roads other than the road you are travelling on and can be distracting.
I almost caused an accident because of this infomation.

Bought an RAC 200 GPS July 2008, discovered the map is dated December 2006 (so maps created during 2006) and told I will have to pay £30 +vat for updated maps (from 2007 - so may be dated dec 2007).
Because I travel around quite a bit I finally bit the bullet & thought I'd buy a satnav rather than rely on printing out close-up maps & directions off the internet.
What a waste of money.
So far (2 weeks), I've discovered 6 postcodes that cannot be found.
Interestingly, the RAC internet route planner gave me directions to each one yet the satnav - with the same map & software - couldn't find the postcode (or street in 4 cases).
According to the helpline, this must be user error as the postcodes show on their units - but the unit isn't faulty as it found many other postcodes...

Hope that the on/off switch failure is an isolated incident.

The RAC 200 sat nav is a cheap but well made sat nav. It has some nice features, like a very good search system, with full post code search and street name search, but also has fuzzy search, fuzzy search acts a little like a Internet search engine. Its easy to use, which is good as the manual is not very good at all, having said that, full instructions are on the cd. Despite it having a entry level size screen, the quality is just as good as some sat navs that are more than twice the price. Speed Camera updates are free.
Battery life is average for a sat nav, but i feel its to short at around 3 hours.
When switched on for the very first time it takes around 5-10 mins to find the satellites. But every time you switch it on after it only takes 1 or 2 mins, then it takes around a min to sort itself out. But after its solid and is very good at getting you around, only twice has it failed to take me to my destination, once was the estate i was trying to find was only just finished, and the second was it did not find the right house, it was only off by 10 meters.
So overall a good cheap sat nav, but its not quite as good as some better ones, because it does not have bluetooth etc. But it is a good A 2 B unit. My mate has one, and his was having a little trouble finding satellites, this is because of his cars screen construction, so he bought a Ariel for it for 5 pound, it transformed his sat nav, it now finds satellites very quickly [faster than mine], and all is well now, so if you are having trouble finding satellites and trouble with routing then a cheap mcx antenna will probably fix it.

My first RAC200 sat nav was returned in 2 days to the shop. It didnt pick up any sattelites. It may have been a returned satnav as it had already been used! And had all sorts of info on it that was not mine.
However, I must say that my NEW RAC200 has been picking up 5 sat's, picks its signal up again when lost on it's own and is accurate to 25 metres.
This information is a mixed bag but in general so far I am pleased with my new toy.

Before I purchased the RAC 200 I borrowed one, it's been great, I have used it several times in just over a week, have navigated around 200 miles. It has not let me down once.
If you want a sat nav that gets you from A-B or even A-B-C-D etc then this is the one, OK you can't have a bad impression of a celeb giving you directions, or play your MP3's on it or connect it via bluetooth. But you can find your way via address, full UK postcode, or point on map.
It has preloaded speed cameras on, I have not found one which it has not warned me about, it's found everyone! You can set the warning to be visual/sound or both, also you can set an alarm to go off for maximum speed too. It has plenty of POI (points of interest) pubs, cinema, petrol station etc, not all are listed but there are quite a few, this may be down to where or on what list businesses advertise I'm not sure.
There is the option to use KMs or Miles, you can avoid or use motorways, toll roads and ferries. You can ask the satnav to zoom in to the map when you slow down and zoom out when moving faster (this is auto on or off). It has daylight or night colours for the maps and 3D or 2D views.
Navigation options are
Fastest/Car
Shortest/Car
Fastest/Lorry
Shortest/Lorry
Pedestrian
It saves your previous places in the history folder so you can find them again easily and save time, it has home address and office address ( don't put exact ones in, as should it get stolen thieves will know where you live and that your out, particularly
if your house keys are next to it)
All in all I can't find any reason not to buy it, the only thing I can see being a problem is new maps, can't find them on the route 66 website, but I have not tried calling the helpline to see where to get them from yet. But saying that main roads don't change all that often and at the rate that the prices of satnavs are dropping it will be cheap enough to buy a new one when it's really needed.

Overall opinion... I thought it was poor. I'm hoping I can get a refund as its not as great as the box makes it out to be! I'm getting a Tom Tom as my dad has one and this has all the information on it which is missing on this one. Its also supposed to pinpoint you to the nearest 3m, it shows me as being 100 yards (2 streets away) when at home and no..theres nothing to hinder the signal, I'm on top of an open hill.

I think the windscreen mount is usless. It doesnt pick up sats half of the time. No indoor chargers.

I borrowed this unit from my father in law for a few days, and it kept locking up and crashing. However, reloading the memory card (SD 256MB) from the CD (supplied in the box) cleared all the problems, and it has worked fine ever since.

My RAC 200 GPS worked on one journey. Within 2 hours the unit froze, no amount of resetting would shift it. What a waste of time and money!

This satnav is great, not had it long but is very easy to use. If you do have any problems with it there is a helpline number on the back of the unit. What more could you ask for?

Overall I am well pleased with the RAC 200 GPS. Recommended by friends and well worth the money.

Just to let you all know the outcome of my findings, the RAC lives up to the job as a reliable tool.
It sometimes takes a few minutes to lock on to satellites but once it does it never looses connectivity.
The sounds can get annoying if you have to many POI's activated with sound.
Battery life although not great is acceptable and as there is an in-car charger supplied so does not give you to much of a problem.
(Tip) charge your unit via a usb cable plugged in to a laptop or PC as it will be quicker than in the car.
Overall it gets 100%
