“I've had an auto Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for about 4...”

★★★★★

written by JLO on 01/05/2004

I've had an auto Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for about 4 years as my daily car. Performance is awesome and easy. The auto gives easy traffic light burn offs without fuss due to the torque multiplication. I have recently added EBC brakes & slotted discs all round, Borla electric adjustable exhaust and SLP air box, K&N filter, smooth bellows. All so easy to fit and take it to about 350bhp. suspension softish but can hold the corners well with 245 tyres. Economical for the performance (24-25mpg on daily run). Practical with hatch & folding rear seats - I got a big patio heater, garden table, two chairs and gas bottle all in with the boot closed! A 4 seater - good if you've got kids but don't want to slow down!

“The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is not zippy! it feels like...”

★★★★★

The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is not zippy! it feels like it's all over the place when pushed but in reality it handles quite well, it just takes some getting used to, once you adjust though you will love the raw feedback this car gives you and it's actually quite forgiving, you don't realise how fast you are going at times but if you go into a corner a little too hot the car will wiggle and get noisy but it will hold.

The best part of this car is the engine, the 5.7l V8 just has so much torque at low rpm's and so much horsepower at high rpm's, you can be cruising at 35mph in 5th gear at 1100 rpm and just put your foot down, it will pull about 220 foot pounds under 2000 rpm and then the power just keeps coming, all the way to 162mph in 5th (6th gear won't pull at that speed due to the .50 to 1 ratio, btw: 4th gear is 1 to 1 ratio) so driving the 6 speed is not a chore, in fact I just use 1st, 3rd & 5th gear when driving normally.

The power ratings are under-rated, I dynoed 335hp & 340tq at 25,000 miles, these cars run low 13's at the track stock! with very minor mod's they are deep into the 12's, 0-60 is 5.4 seconds.

I have a Borla exhaust system and aftermarket intake lid on my car which brings me to the reason this car turns so many heads... it sounds awsome! a nice modest rumble that turns into a warriors battle cry as the engine winds up, it sounds just like an American V8 should, deep and throaty.

Boot space is OK although somewhat unusual in that it has a very deep pocket at the back and then a shelf (over the fuel tank) and then the back seats, you can fit a lot of stuff in this car if you fold down the back seat.

Exterior: The front fenders, front & rear bumpers and doors are plastic, the wheels are nice and the paint job is decent for a Chevy.

Interior: It's a Chevy, the interior sucks, but it does what it needs to and nothing has broken yet, mind you it's hard to break Tupperware, the seats give good support and the Monsoon 500W stereo has secondary controls on the steering wheel.

The T-Tops are a nice touch, when they are on the car feels just like normal hard top, when they are in the trunk you almost have a convertable but you don't have to worry about wind buffeting from behind and it's nice to know there is still a roof structure protecting your noggin.

The brakes are very good although a little vague in feel.

The manual shifter that comes in the car is awful! it has a giant rubber bushing that makes it hard to select the right gear in a hurry, I put a Pro 5.0 aftermarket shifter in and now the throws are defined but still a little long.

I highly recommend getting the traction control option as it will save you skin on a wet road, with this much torque the car can "swap end's" in a heartbeat.

All in all the Camaro Z28 is much like the TVR Griffith, most people hate driving them initially but at the end of the day would rather drive nothing else.

This car will put a smile on your face.

“With a few US performance parts the Chevrolet Camaro...”

★★★★★

written by Sod. on 28/02/2002

With a few US performance parts the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 car can pump out over 400BHP and go like mental. Wheel spinning at 90mph in 3rd gear no problem. Good basic reliable power, strong running gear. LHD a problem in the UK with parking barriers. Good fuel economy, near 30mph on a trip. Stock suspension is soft, better around town than the track. Aftermarket parts are plentiful and can make a supercar from the basic model. 5.7L engine is super mental.

Where are things like 1/4 miles time, 0-60, 0-100, ect.... Very important to many people in a review or to compare cars. Think about it!
