“Ball Tearing Sports Tourer”

★★★★★

written by on 27/05/2017

Bike-2002 F1 Believe me when I say the F1 and F2 are faultless...in every respect...even with stock pipes, stock rear shock and forks and yes, they can be a sports tourer and a VERY competent one at that. This bike will slay many other machines (even big red v twins) in the hands of a competent rider and will have you dragging knees and looking for the apex. The key....you must spend time...a lot of time getting the suspension and ride height set up CORRECTLY, when you do you will be amazed at how competent this machine really is. A correctly set up F1/F2 will never shake its head or get out of shape and they simply do not need a steering damper, they really are that stable. I am 48yo, 6'1" and 86kg nude. I feel no need what so ever to replace the stock screen with a double bubble etc. The stock screen is perfect. My shoulders and helmet are in clean air and at 120kmh the 9 is the most comfortable sports machine I've ridden. At 220kmh it is pure rock solid bliss and just humming nicely. I live in the mountains of South East Australia and regularly do 400km 'loop days' around my favourite roads. Does my back hurt?...nope, shoulders?...nope, knees?...nope, neck, wrist? no. Now the critical question...does my butt hurt?... No, that seat is pure bliss, wide and supportive with plenty of room to slide forward and back. Good solid tank range of around the 300km mark depending on your wrist and the headlight is nothing short of excellent (the rocker can be positioned half way between the high and low beams, with a bit of dexterity, to have both on at once). In summary, don't think twice...just buy one. Everyone whose sold theirs now wants them back!

Awesome. This has me pretty excited if I do say so as I just grabbed one of these up, in a snowstorm, a few months ago. I’ve still not ridden her but I’m hoping she’ll prove to be the great all around bike so many claim her to be. Mine wasn’t maintained as well as I’d have hoped by the two previous owners and I’m going through suspension front and back now. The rear linkage neve4 got any grease in 33K miles and the forks may have been gone through once. I’ve replaced the rear shock with a Penske 3 way. I’m replacing bushings in the front forks along with seals and oil too for starters (first ride “Yey or Neigh” LOL) to figure out where to go from there to find my “right place”. She seems reasonably comfortable at a standstill but I’m toying with the idea of a comfort bar kit. Your raving review of headlights as “excellent” makes me smile. Why why why do manufacturers put feeble useless headlights on b8kes in the name of styling? Form vs function makes me wonder. Not sure what the prior owners did to the carbs but that’s next project going through that. It’s got a Yoshimura RS1 slipon. I really like the smooth off/on response of carbs vs EFI and many have praised the keihins on the F1/F2 as being exceptional in that respect. Time will tell. The previous owner had lowered the bike so I had to replace the dogbones and back up to stock ride height plus 8mm at the rear shock mount and 6mm or so showing above the triple clamps up front. I’m sure hoping the end result is worth it and I end up as happy as you. A well sorted 135-140ish rwhp is right about my happy place on two wheels assuming a planted and stable chassis with good all day comfort. I’ll probably start out with stock gearing, which various owners claim is “Great” and fettle from there to suit. Mainly I’m wanting good strong acceleration off 30-120mph corners and I see top speed almost never so that’s not a concern. Gas mileage secondary to “right” acceleration. Mmmmmmmmmm. :)

“Owned my C1 for 5 years now, recently prices have...”

Owned my C1 for 5 years now, recently prices have dipped to below £1800 for clean low mileage examples so it's time to review a forgotten sportsbike that cost nearly twice as much as a 1200 Bandit when new but now can be bought 20% cheaper for a similar year model.
You gotta feel sorry for Kawasaki...after the successes of the original Z1 and the GPZ900 they thought they had the big sportsbike niche sewn up, but the B model was aced out by the smaller and nimbler Fireblade and this forced them back to the drawing board. Come '98 and they unveiled the C model...entirely new from the ground up, lighter than the 'blade and with a good dose more power...surely success beckoned...what's that on the Yamaha stand?...the R1. No-one even looked at the ZX9r. However that was an error on behalf of the buying public...it took Yamaha another 3 years to get the R1 to the sort of speeds the 9 would acheive and though a little nimbler it was nowhere near as comfortable.
What you get for your pittance is at least 130hp at the rear wheel, with more on tap at silly speeds from the effective "ram air" sytem, sub 400lb weight, incredibly bomb proof engine and strong Tokico six pot brakes (more on these later)you also get a chassis that will accomodate six footers with ease and (relatively..for a sportsbike) high clip ons.
Engine performance is fantastic, smooth power right across the rev range with a real sting from 8000rpm, there is a slight flat spot around 3000rpm that can be entirely banished by advancing the ignition (acheivable on the 'C' by just modifying the pick up coil mounting), the suspension both ends is adjustable for preload and comp/rebound damping.
Top Tip Time,....replace the 10w fork oil with 15ml of 15w oil for every stone of weight over 12st and dump the rear shock for a ZX10r item as quickly as you can...it bolts straight in and is much more sophisticated than the standard unit and...if short of leg, drop the fork 5mm through the yokes, it quickens the steering nicely and the 9R has stability to spare..if lanky the same can be acheived by using jack up dogbones for the rear.
The Tokico brakes, though used on a plethora of Kwaks and Suzy's...for some reason cause a bit of a headache on the 9 and most owners find themselves battling lever travel, various...mostly ineffective methods are employed including Brembo cylinders, braided lines and various methods of bleeding, the only tip I can give is keep the (12!) caliper pistons clean and fit a bleed nipple to the master cylinder banjo bolt, when you've done with the bleeding do this one last...seems to work for me. You can't knock the overall power of them mind, Ferodo platinums suit better than EBC HH's which take a hell of a time to warm up and are pretty poor until they do.
The headlamp on the C is frankly, rubbish...though this has been adressed on the E model onwards with twin lamps, putting brighter bulbs in partially helps...but the pattern always seems a bit wrong to me.
It's all nitpicking though really, for wobbly 600 bandit money you get a bike that can easily keep up with the gixxer thou's and 10r's on the road (though you'll be putting a touch more work in)is spacious enough for a decent tour without seeing an Osteopath, is monumentally reliable and even a bad one will touch a genuine 170mph.
What's there not to like?.

Bought a zx9f2p and its been fantastic , but would never class any of the zx9`s as sports tourers lol, who the hell said that anyway your lucky to get a tank bag on it ,its not a zzr mate . Anyway it handles fantstic and storms out of corners like you would never beleive, its exactly what you want from a middle of the road sports bike it ticks all the boxes and more. wanted a C model but due to the 3 gear problem gave that model the elbow and then this f came my way , still cant beleive how much faster than my k3 gixxer 750 it is and it handles better. A very very underated bike .

I have a Kawasaki ZX9R ZX900 F2P & love this bike only complaint I bought it used & strangely enough have discovered mine has only a 5 speed .
I have asked numerous mechanics & can't figure out what could have happened to 6th gear ??
It runs very strong in all 5 gears but stops @ 5. I can only figure that maybe 6th is screwed up & wont engage, very strange other than this the bike has been fantastic & is very fast.

I got a 99 reg Kawasaki ZX9R ZX900 F2P and have been happy since, I have not changed anything on her and despite a scare with some random noises all has been great (the noises turned out to be from when a mechanic had put the tyre on so it rubbed against my hugger afetr a service)

Had a 1998 C1 in blue for some 4 years now. I have not modified it in any way, unlike most of my previous 20+ bikes. The original chain & sprox, cosseted, lasted 24k! Heavy on rear tyres, but has been the most reliable bike I have owned.
Put it this way, the previous owner has since bought an R1, followed by a Ducati & then a ZX-12R, & he is still pestering me to sell him the 900 back. A firm no, although I confess to being tempted by a swop with the 1200.

Cheap thrills and great for touring (especially if you add a gel cushion as the seat is a bit hard after about 500 miles! Really good economy when touring. I've had two now, the early C2 and currently an E1, The cornering can be improved hugely by raising the rear ride height by 10mm (shorter suspension arms for about £10 on ebay). I've done a couple of track days and it can keep with most but the newer sports stuff blows it into the weeds. Ridden to Prague and back (for the Brno GP) in a weekend and the Sachsenring a couple of times. Taken it for a week in Spain and all is in it's stride. In my opinion this is a really good inexpensive road bike capable of commuting, touring and back road thrashing. However it won't keep up with the GSXRs and R1s on a trackday!

The Kawasaki ZX9R is a fast and well built bike with good handeling and suspension. Its an all round machine capable of going very fast as well as munching the miles. It has been classed as a sports tourer by a lot of people but i think it is more sports orientated. It has 144hp on tap and wieghs in at around 183kg which puts it up there with the other 900 sports bikes. It is quite heavy compared to most 9s but it makes up for that with a supurb bulletproof powerplant. It can reach speeds of 170mph and is quick getting there. Overall a really decent 900cc sportsbike.

Bought my Kawasaki ZX9R when it was 6 months old. I have had it for 5 years now, and still love it as much as the day i first saw it in the dealers.
It the green one, and turns heads whenever I go for a run.
Tour Germany every year, these bikes are fast and comfortable.

written by adycrane on 21/02/2008

I owned the c2 model in blue. what a powerful engine. decent handling and up to 160 miles before reserve when fast touring. I kept her about six months but noticed that my riding was untidy due to taking advantage of that engine too much and entering a corner at silly speeds. She got me from a motorcycle event in Belgium in a day and I could still walk which speaks volumes for its all round ability. Have to admit she was just a bit too fast for me. Prices are down to below 2k now so what a ridiculous bargain.

★★★★★

written by pumpkin9r on 21/12/2007

Even though it's outclasses for pure sport use by other bikes, it's a nice big comfy chassis that makes a great super-sport-touring ride. The fuel tank is BIG and fuel economy is great, so I can get around 350km (200+ miles) per tank. Even though there's no fuel gauge, it's easy to tell when to flip over to reserve (it's carb'd, not EFI), which is when you know you start looking for fuel stations.

I've added a tank bag, large saddle bags, and a tail bag, and it is GREAT for long rides and highway droning. The only change I had to do was a spacer between the muffler and the saddle bag - home made hack job that only cost me $5 or so!

The BIGGEST thing that bothers me is that my Canadian 2002 model has the speedo only in km/h, so I have NO IDEA what my speeds are in mph when I go to the US. Other models like the ZX12 have a dual scale, so beats me why they didn't use the same on this machine. A GPS or mental conversion is probably adequate, but might not fly with a state trooper or court judge.

It's my first bike, and probably more than what a beginner SHOULD be on, but I've had no regrets at all and don't see any reason to want any other sport-touring bike. It was reasonably priced when I bought it, insurance is good, fuel economy is great, and the 2002 gold/black finish looks gorgeous.

Most of the USA the speed limits are 55-65mph. 100kph is 60mph. It’s simple enough to purchase a mph/kph speedo off eBay to sort this out if it bothers you that much. I got out of a speeding ticket years ago in Canada by pointing out that I was going 100 as indicated on my speedo which was only calibrated in mph while the posted speed was 100kph. LOL. Not saying that would work consistently but when desperatation struck I had no better argument than “I’m sorry officer, I wasn’t thinking about it and was simply going the indicated speed via my speedometer!”.

“They say this model comes under the heading of sports...”

★★★★★

written by Max Cady on 08/05/2007

They say this model comes under the heading of sports tourer but I've opted for the sports heading, I've had very few tourers that I would have been confident enough to take the tyres right to the edge on, so I can assure you in my opinion this bike can hustle with the best of them, depending on the riders ability. The lack of fuel gauge is a bit annoying but I get around 120 per tank so once the mileage is set you know where you stand plus you have the backup of a reserve. I've had no major problems with Kawasaki engineering in the past and this one is no exception, although on mine the gear box can be a bit vague if your not positive with your changes, I know this could have been a problem with some of the earlier ones. When you start to look round for a bike in this league R1 - GSXR - etc I don't think you would find a better bike for the same money, I was looking for an R1 but for the same as I paid for mine I would have been looking for a 98/99 for an R1.
This is a bike that inspires confidence in you, you could possibly say, leads you into temptation, but if it did I would be more than happy that it would get you out of trouble.

Ride safe..
