Written on: 15/11/2008

I think the book called The Worst Witch was a little interesting but I think the book should be for younger people like 5 to 9 years old. Because it just like Harry Potter but in Harry Potter it has boys and girls but in The Worst Witch it only has girls. But Mildred was a good character in the book, I think Mildred was my favourite charter. Because she always get blamed for everything, like when they had to show their flying to the whizzed but when they where pricing Mildred broom stick broke… Read Full Review

Written on: 16/04/2004 by Kirsty 1 (15 reviews written)

Jill Murphy has written a truly delightful set of novels for kids (I'd say 4 to 7 year old level) starting with The Worst Witch which was published in 1975, before Harry Potter was even a twinkle in the eye. I bought it for a little friend of mine for £3.99 and when I gave it to her she asked no end of questions which I tried my very best to answer:

'So what's it all about, Auntie Kirsty..?'

Well, it's about Mildred Hubble. Mildred is in Year 1 and really is the worst witch at Miss Cackle's… Read Full Review

Written on: 15/12/2003 by desertmermaid (1 review written)

I first read the Worst Witch back in 1982 and was completely captivated. At the time only the first two books were available and by the time the third one was published I was well and truly hooked.

I could completely identify with the skinny awkward Mildred Hubble and her long plaits.

Now 21 years later I am reading the first book with my six year old son, who has also had some Harry Potter read to him. The Worst Witch books are much simpler, in a good way, and he now prefers Mildred's… Read Full Review

“Jill Murphy The Worst Witch strikes again, ”

Written on: 03/09/2003 by Coral Jermaine (1 review written)

Jill Murphy The Worst Witch strikes again,
This paticular book is just one of my favourites as Mildred has a chance to show her responsibilty of a new- girl named Enid Nightshade. Enid went to a dat-witch school and moved due to flying there and back. Enid at first was quiet, But meeting Mildred Hubble she changed to a nice but strict young witch. Like on the programme " Monkey Business" Enid Nightshade has enough of Ethel Hallow and decides to use a spell she used at day witch school and send… Read Full Review

“I believe Harry Potter and the Worst Witch are two...”

Written on: 26/01/2003 by strawberri girl. (1 review written)

I believe Harry Potter and the Worst Witch are two excellent series of books. They have many differences and some similarities - but they are each unique and individual in their own way. The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy is an excellent read and I recommend it to anyone - witch fan or not. I would just like to say, for those of you who believe The Worst Witch is a copy of Harry Potter - you are mistaken. Jill Murphy's the Worst Witch was written years before Harry Potter - but this does… Read Full Review

well, i haven't really read those books, but let me tell you that i'm a huge harry potter books fan!!!, and as i can compare between harry potter books and movie, i want to say that the worst witch movie, tv show, book, whatver! is a bad copy of harry potter books!!, if you have read j.k.rowlin's books you will see that the stories had a few differences, well maybe it is a coincidence, but in quality, harry potter books has won all my attention, they are really good!!!, now before i finish, i… Read Full Review

Leaving aside the questionable practice of writing comparative reviews on books that one has not read. It should be pointed out in the interests of accuracy that Jill Murphy's first Worst Witch books was published 25 years ago. This makes it 20 years older than J K Rowlings Harry Potter books. No one (including as far as I am aware Jill Murphy) has ever suggested that J K Rowling copied Worst Witch although it may have been an influence in the way that all books and films read or seen by J K Rowling may have influenced her.

The idea of comparative reviews is good but is even better when used to identify relative strengths. Doing a "review" for a book as a mere statement of fan-worship for another is not a positive thing. I and my daughters enjoy both Worst Witch and Harry Potter books

Mjones's Response to 32166_la pola.'s Review

I find it odd that everyone seems to tiptoe around the issue that Rowling was most definitely 'influenced' by The Worst Witch books. Having read both Harry Potter and Worst Witch, I can honestly say that I feel there are a LOT of similarities between the two that should at least warrent a mention. The Worst Witch was written in 1975, and while it may be kind to say that JK Rowling 'didn't remember', this may also be naive. If this is true, The Worst Witch should be touted as Harry Potter's ancestor, and held up for all to see.

I also have not yet read the Worst Witch books, but I have seen the shows. I have also read and seen all things Harry Potter. They seem similar with a mean blck-wearing Potions teacher, and other examples, but The Worst Witch came first, so I don't know. They could be individually inspired, but Rowling could have had read Worst witch when she was younger and it was in the back of her mind when she came up with the idea. Who knows???

I find this review to be appalling! How can you honestly review a book without reading it first? That's just ignorance. The point of comparative reviewing is to bring up merits of both books, not dismiss one without reading it so you can simply go on about how much you like the other.

To make things worse you have shown a complete lack of knowledge towards these books. The Worst Witch was published in 1975 which is over 20 years before Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published; so how can you say that The Worst Witch is a copy of Harry Potter? You can't. Both series of books have some similarities, but also many differences, and both stand out as great books on their own merits.

The Worst Witch can certainly stand up on its own merrits. Jill Murphy wrote her first book in 1975, so she can hardly be accussed of copying. An idea is an idea and it happens often that people have similar ideas to some body else with out knowing.
The Worst Witch is an enjoyable book for young readers and the show I feel is as good as any other half hour childrens show. Jill Murphy should be proud of her books as she has made many a young reader happy and thats really all that matters.
Harry Potter is a good series to, maby the marketing of these books, movies etc have been the reason they have stood out in the public.
I think the Worst Witch is a great book for any young reader to read. If children are reading these books , what does it matter if some are similar, children need to enjoy reading and using there imaginations.

Written on: 08/01/2003

This "review" is totally useless and not even a proper review. As other people have already said, Worst Witch is not a copy of Harry Potter, as the books were published 22 years before. Although the recent television series was made after one Harry Potter book had been released, it is definitely not a copy (in fact, some parts of the Harry Potter films are very similar to the television series...the uniform for instance). I'm glad to see other people rallying to the support of the Worst Witch; both it and Harry Potter are good books in their own rights, the only main similarities being the magical school, a popular theme which is found in many other books - Wizards' Hall by Jane Yolen for example.

Thank you so very much, Steve and Frank for your brilliant defenses! Perhaps Jill Murphy's series was an influence on Ms.Rowling, and even if they weren't, both series would fit together nicely. In fact, they are not really alike in any other regard but character and atmosphere. I love both series dearly, and I strongly believe readers, older and younger, should enjoy both.

Having read the review I find it to be almost offensive in it's complete disregard of normal practice. A product can't be reviewed without being read, and to state that the writing is worse than in a compared book without having read both is impossible. It reads more as a personal attack on the author. Fortunately the books are of sufficient quality to rise above such thoughtless words and I would recommend anybody considering reading these books to ignore this particular review, or at least take note of the respect rating of the review. Read the books and make up your own minds, then come back and add your review or comment.

“"The Worst Witch" books are about a witch named...”

Written on: 30/01/2002 by Libby Bove. (1 review written)

"The Worst Witch" books are about a witch named Mildred Hubble. To put it in a nutshell, Mildred wasn't much of a witch - well, she could cast a spell, but never the right one. I've read three books in total, each getting better as they go on. In the first book, "The Worst Witch", Mildred messes up the broom display. It isn't really her fault but nobody believes her. In the second book, "The Worst Witch strikes again", a new girl comes into the story and she is the real troublemaker, but… Read Full Review
