“Poor quality phones”

★★★☆☆

written by Jay... on 13/10/2017

I've always had generally great customer service with helpful staff. however, I was advised when upgrading my phone that the j5 Samsung was a really good phone. I've never had such bad advice, awful cheap quality that shattered with minimal effort after 4 days.

“All good but voicemail issues guaranteed ”

★★★☆☆

written by EzequielHanley56 on 21/07/2014

Cant fault them for everything else as it is very cheap and good coverage. However your will have voicemail issues. I can quote them on the phone - that they have had lots of people leaving them due to the unsteady network because they are doing so many updates. Frustrating to say the least. Do something Virgin or it may be too late

“THOROUGHLY FED UP WITH VIRGIN MOBILE.”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/10/2013

I'm a PAYG customer, who is reluctant to get into a contract. Only need a mobile for texts and rarely calls. I had a second mobile phone kept in the car with a charger and about £6.00 credit for emergencies. Both numbers showed on my on-line Account page until recently when my 'emergency' phone number had disappeared. I phoned Virgin today to find out why this number no longer appeared. Apparently as I had not used it in the last year it was cancelled, with no way of reinstating it and it's written in the original SIM card pack. Me - "Where is my credit?" reply - Oh, that is not available either. Me - "Who has it?" reply - No one. Me - "But it's my money, I want it back". reply - sorry, but no can do. Me - " Well Virgin must have it then" ....... reply - silence. I was told I'm not the only one to be in this situation. I suggested the information in the pack was not obvious. No reply. Managed to get another SIM, but no real agreement to a credit. Will need to phone when SIM with me and take up the matter of the missing credit then. It seems it will depend on the person's mood at Virgin whether I get MY money back or not. I suggested Virgin are quick enough to text, phone or email with marketing, but do not have the courtesy to remind a customer of the impending self destruct of their SIM card. What an easy way to make money.

“What you pay is what you get...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 03/06/2012

I purchased a blackberry curve 8520 in May 2011. In May 2012 my charging port had been removed accidentally. The phone was still under warranty but virgin did not fix it. They said it was my fault. I got a second opinion and a small phone shop told me it was down to poor workmanship which is covered under virgins policy. They still did not take any action. The staff were rude and unhelpful. They sounded foreign which meant the call centre was probably abroad and they kept keeping me on hold. The call was a fortune. My insurance company however are replacing the phone without a problem. When using virgin mobile, I personally found that the signal was quite weak and I lost it frequently. I would not recommend virgin mobile to anyone. You get what you pay for. Cheap price, poor service. In future I will not be using virgin again despite their cheap and competitive prices on the market.

“Was with Orange for 16 years and NEVER had a problem...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 02/05/2011

Was with Orange for 16 years and NEVER had a problem with coverage but had many issues with Orange customer service, guess that is the norm though in telecommunications. Went to Virgin as they are meant to use Orange network and my partner was getting a staff pack. Sadly the coverage is not the same, seems to struggle indoors but fine outside, not great if you have got rid of your land line so be warned. They sent me a reconditioned phone, but having been in the industry I picked this up straight away. Was I rang to raise these issues, and found that they wanted to charge me 10p for pointing out their failures. You have to challenge this and they say they will credit the cost of the call back if you had a genuine fault. New handset received and still I'm finding I have to jump through hoops, voice mail not set up as standard and long annoying process to do so yourself. This is all possibly so you have to ring customer services again and get charged another 10p for an unneccessary chat which they fail to realise is a major waste of your time let alone theirs. Overhaul I think they are really letting themselves down, the coverage is not great indoors, they send out reconditioned products thinging you'll never know and then charge you to poit out where they are going wrong. So far I have a Nokia N8 for 3 weeks and still have answer machine that reads as though it's all set up yet when you ring it, you don't get through to any answer machine. You go in the settings and try and activate the voice mail for busy calls, not answered calls, out of reach calls, and not available and message comes back saying Requet Rejected or Request not complete. So they want another 10p and I'll have to ring them again. Don't doubt Virgin to be a good company for its other products and is a good employer, but I don't rate the mobile service at all, real shame. How will I cope on a 2 year contract you guess is as good as mine LOL

written by on 05/11/2009

I always thought Virgin were fairly good (as I have been with them for a number of years) from their customer service to their tarrifs etc, even though thier choice of phones were fairly limited.
UNTIL recently, when I moved job and had to contact them to sort out a few problems (no signal in new building).I am not sure how long they have had 'foreign' call centre's as well as their uk one/s but it is very frustrating when you are trying to sort things out. On more than one occasion I end up having to repeat myself 3 or 4 times, they cannot understand me, I cannot understand them. A complete waste of time. Because of the lack of signal and crappy foreign call centre's, this is why I am now moving away from Virgin and recommend people think twice before considering them.

Virgin Mobile UK is fantastic value. I ordered my phone, selected price plan and phone arrived the next day. Perfect! I use to be on Pay as you go with O2, but was paying to much so I decided to go on contract. Virgin had the best deals. And as I was with virgin for my tv, hone phone and broadband I thought "why not?".
Its not all good though! the coverage from O2 was outstanding! I never got not signal, but with Virgin the coverage is average to poor.
Is it worth having a cheap package that you can't use? well no. So it maybe worth paying that little more on a newtork like O2 (or Tesco as they use the o2 network).

Overall its ok and would recommend, providing you dont mind the odd signal loss now and then.

“I've been with Virgin for maybe five years and found...”

★★★☆☆

written by The Cats Mother on 12/06/2009

I've been with Virgin for maybe five years and found plenty to like about them. With all the family on Virgin, I've found their website very good for keeping tabs on which of my children need emergency top-ups to keep them in touch with home - and which of them are inveterate gossips who need to reign in their talk-time! If I could improve the website, I'd ask that we could name-label the numbers in our accounts for instant identification (I've had up to eight numbers on the go at one time) and that we could use the website to move credit between accounts, which currently we can do only over the phone.

The coverage is poor in my area (rural East Yorkshire); so much that we have to walk down to the end of the lane even to get enough signal to send or receive a text. Not exactly convenient on a freezing night in January whilst wearing your pyjamas. Indoor reception? Forget it!

Compared to other networks at the time, Virgin was good value, thus we put up with the poor reception, but now they're so clearly losing the fight against the new fellow-virtuals such as ASDA and Tesco, we're one by one porting over to ASDA (less than half the price and better coverage courtesy of the Vodafone network) as our credit runs out.

Which brings me to the next problem; as of about a year ago, Virgin (perhaps in an attempt to stem the exodus of customers to Tesco and ASDA), started charging £15 for handset unlocking. Previously, subject to a minimum spend/time spent with Virgin, unlocking had been free. Now, I kicked up a fuss about this, especially as the handsets were old and probably worth less than the unlocking fee and in the end I got two of my old handsets unlocked for the price of one, so that's a trick worth trying.

I'm surprised to see negative comments about customer care, because every time I've spoken to the people at Virgin, they have been really helpful and friendly. Tip: if you have to speak to them on a landline, always email your initial enquiry, giving as much detail as you can and then Virgin phone you back when they already have the answer - saves you hanging about on the landline at 20p a minute while they sort out your problem from scratch. :)

I'm keeping my emergency glove-box phone on Virgin (as it's a good idea to have two networks available in case of technical hitches), but I'm taking my main number over to ASDA.

8p a minute/4p a text in the comfort of your own home
v
20p a minute/10p a text shivering on a street corner

Can't argue with that. Sorry, Virgin.

Signing in online has always been difficult. Seems to be a glitch on the password section. Never seems to recognize my password and every time I have tried changing the password that too, does not work and to be experiencing the same problems over a period of years is crazy.
Its been interesting choosing a new phone from the Virgin Mobile Website. Then comparing them with phones reviewed on this Review Centre. Virgin are still busy selling old models for top money!
I too have used my mobile to vote on several TV competitions, programmes and charities. Texting the word STOP to any annoying TV companies which continue offering competitions by text messaging certainly works! and I`ve never been charged as much as £1 by any programme even those they say that's what it costs for entry.

★★★★☆

written by Barbaraj on 14/09/2006

I have never had a problem with Virgin Mobile UK, although I have to admit I am not a big user of mobiles in general but this service more than meets my demands - if only I could take calls in my flat. Can't get a signal in my flat, every time it rings I have to run out the front door, but having said that, my previous provider was exactly the same, so not sure if this is a generic problem.

“I bought a Sony Ericsson K500i mobile phone. It is a...”

★★★★☆

written by chrisray on 26/02/2006

I bought a Sony Ericsson K500i mobile phone. It is a nice phone, and it does exactly what I would like in a phone and more!! The keys are close (not bad for 50 quid)! Then the trouble starts! I have had four more phones since then. Virgin ran out of K500i's so they gave me an upgrade K700i... nice. Then that broke. Several phones later my warranty ran out, so I brought a Siemens SF65, which seems good. I only wish I'd taken out insurance with it, as somehow I lost it while in London.

I don't recommend you buy Virgin reconditioned phones! They cost less money for a reason. Only 6 months warranty, which is not enough! I got through 10 phones at least. So I'm buying a NEW Nokia next, but because Virgin don't seem to be doing any deals anymore (Orange = 2 for 1 cinema tickets) and (T-mobile = mates rates, 5p per minute calls and 5p per text). I can't argue; they are both good deals, but Virgin = 15p for the first 5 minutes and 5p thereafter... this seems an expensive flat rate, though cheap considering some companies. I might be leaving Virgin.

The staff are very friendly if you have got any problems, and voicemail is free. Delivery is 24 hours next day (including Saturday), so if anything does happen, it doesn't seem such a wait for a new phone. And delivery is prompt! I have been told that even their new phones aren't that much better, sometimes though, if you're lucky, you might get the pick of the crop! Still, Virgin are selling the SE K700i for just under £100, and they where selling it at £60 before hand... a week later I check and its gone up... this is too much! I know this phone is good, and it would be great if it didn't break, but the Nokia's are so much more robust. My old one only failed slightly because the keys partly stopped working. I'm a mountain biker, so I have had lots of crashes (dare I admit it!) and lots of mud, not the combination a phone likes; and still it works!

If Virgin started knocking a bit off their phones, and if they introduced some Nokia mobile phones into their range, then I'll be tempted back. If you're not fussed about the deals, and want great service and have a decent Nokia, and you can put your sim in, then Virgin would be a good choice!

★★★★☆

written by pnh73 on 30/01/2004

As far as I know the Virgin network is just using bandwidth from T-Mobile (Virgin Sims work in T-Mobile locked phones and vice versa) and therefore probably has the same reception as T-Mobile phones. I find that the lack of GPRS a little annoying as I cant make use of my camera phone properly. I contacted Virgin and they told me that they "Will be implementing GPRS in future". Draw your own conclusions...

Overall service is generally good. Text messages all seem to arrive. I can call people. Topping up is easy as the e-topup card is accepted nearly everywhere.

Generally a good, no frills service.

I definitely agree that Virgin are the best when it comes to value for money and customer care, they do try their best. I bought the 3510i from them after being thoroughly pleased with the service on my 3310. However, I'm now rather disappointed. I can't use MMS, Email... :(
Good network for beginners or people who want the very basics.
Anyone recommend a good network for GPRS/MMS?

I totally agree that Virgin Mobile are a credible alternative to T-Mobile particulary in relationship to their new exhorbitant tariff.

I am told that Virgin will be offering Gprs services towards the end of the year however I can recommend the following pay as you go networks which offer gprs.

1) o2 - o2 offer new pay as you go customers free
Wap services for 30 days from the time of
purchase to a maximum of 3000

It is then possible to opt for weekly wap which
costs £1.49 per week and gives 200 weekly
minutes.

They also offer Gprs Pay as you go at 2p for
the first downloaded page and 1p thereafter.

2) Orange charge 10p Wap during the week and 5p
at weekends
They offer Gprs at 4.00 pr kb

hope this helps

Check the sim is activated and topped up. Or check the phone and sim are comparable with the same network. Often phones are locked to individual networks.

If its a micro sim + micro sim adapter what ever you do do not just pull it out. THEY GET STUCK I did this and wrecked the connector pins . In my opnion virgin should never be giving people micro sims this way when they know full well it wrecks phones ... virgin even tried to make me pay for the repair and i was without a phone for a week or so .. To make matters even worse my phone had a 3mm crack in the screen and they refused to fix the sim problem before i paid to have my crack fixed ...and then when i rang virgin insurance they had no record of me .. so just be aware ...and hold your ground it is virgin at fault for penny pinching and not issuing the correct sim in the 1st place
