“hard work but worth it”

Written on: 18/10/2013

We have had our female patterdale Roxy for almost five years. She was quite hard work at first but you have to persevere with some general training and in the end it pays off.She has settled down nicely and is fairly obedient outside and can be let off the lead in the dog park for a good run and to socialise with other dogs and play. She is so good in the house very obedient and extreemely affectionate, loves everyone she meets humans and dogs alike and lives with our rescue staffy and she is… Read Full Review

“Awesome little pup”

Written on: 22/09/2012 by eyeflingpu (1 review written)

We got our patterdale at 9 weeks old and he's awesome. Had a few issues with toilet training but does pee on command word. Brilliant at training. His recall is fantastic. Loves kids but does get very excited. Hates being left alone for any amount of time. Very inquisitive especially about cats. Basically like any other pup which is lots of hard work and consistency but very worth while. Wouldn't be without him… Read Full Review

“My Patterdale”

Written on: 23/05/2012

I had my patterdale (Tia) since she was 11 months old now she is 4 and will be 5 in december. She is a brilliant dog and behaves very well. The only problems with have with her are she is scared of water and doesn't give up her toys she doesn't understand leave. Does anyone know how I can change this? She is great with other dogs, and can tell if you are upset because she will come and sit with you. She is such a loyal dog and protects us. Tia needs alot of attention and walks she hates being… Read Full Review

My PT is very good with my 16 year old cat, and she is also afraid of water. These dogs were bread to go to ground, and water is a foriegn concept. I dont know if I could be trained out of them. I agree with you 100%, mine is the best and smartest dog I have ever had!

To get her to leave her toys, I had to offer my little girl something she wanted more, usualy a tasty treat. She is very food driven, and I just keep my hand on the toy while I reach for a treat and tell her calmly to let go. It took a while, but she always left the toy in my hand to take the treat out of the other. good luck with your little one!

Hi I have a PT and she loves swimming in the river etc but hates the rain unfortunatly she doesn't like other animals either, she wont drop and leave as its the rat catcher aspect but I have got someone coming to help me deal with it. She also hates being left alone even for a second they are not easy dogs to own! But like you say very loyal to her pack and gaurds all of us with her life even if she is scared!

“Patterdale/cross”

Written on: 23/10/2011

We have a 13 week old, had him at 8 weeks and so far he is a wonderful dog. I have 2 kids aged 6 and 9, and he is very good. We live in the country near miles of field walks so ideal for a terrier. He is very calm in the house and loves nothing more than having a snooze. My springer spaniel was (though lovely) hyperactive and crazy from a tiny age,was expecting same with this one but he`s a quiet little chap. He is crossed with a long haired JR though so i guess this changes personality… Read Full Review

have just got my new female patterdale, she is 8 weeks old and is great with the family! we are in the middle of teaching her what she should an shoudnt bite and is doing quit well for a puppy so young. Have not had the chance to take her out yet as she still needs her second vaccination, but hopefully all will go ok! :) i know a lot of people think patterdales are vicious because they are breed for hunting but if you get a patterdale from the right breeder who DOESNT breed them for hunting… Read Full Review

I have a 10 month old male rough coat patterdale. My partner and I got him at 8 weeks and have taken him to lots of puppy training classes its important to socialise this dog well when they're young as terriers in general can get a bit snappy. Patterdales are energetic, bright and pick up instruction really quickly whilst this is great it also means he needs a lot of stimulation with new tricks, toys and lots of exercise. We're fortunate to live next to a big park and close to Hackney marshes… Read Full Review

Written on: 04/09/2010

I have a patterdale terrier. During the day, she is a delightful bundle of energy. Very lovable, loyal and obedient.
Come 8pm, when she is tired, if anybody disturbs her from her sleep, she will growl, snap and I'm quite sure one day she will bite.
I put her to bed at 8pm, in the utility area, and we leave her be.
Because of this, I would recommend this little dog to any family with children over the age of seven… Read Full Review

we have had our 15month old dog (nuts not inc) for 5 days now, and what a difference in those 5 days, he has gone from being in front and pulling like a train to walking to heel and sitting before crossing the road.
although they aren't non-moulting, my asthmatic partner has had no ill effects at all. One big issue though, he doesn't like other male dogs in the same room, but we're dealing with it… Read Full Review

I have just bought a patterdale pup. Buster, he is only 7 week old so cant take him for walks yet. I don't hear him at all at night and he is quiet when I go out and when I come back in, I just hope he isn't crying while I'm out and driving the neighbours mad. Any way what a great dog I have 2 young kids 5 and 1 and he is great with them yet playful at the same time I also have 2 cats and he hasn't even bother with them. I fell in love with a friend's Patterdale and when he sired a litter she gave me one of the pups.
His dad was a bit of a thug and an uncontrollable hunter (possibly because he had been bred in hunt kennels) but his mother was a third generation family pet. Luckily Henri inherited his mothers traits and has a superb nature and will not even catch the mice the cat brings into the house!.

His joyful intelligent nature wins over absolutely everybody he comes into contact with and he is famous in… Read Full Review

Their intelligence is amazing and Im sure when I scold him and he barks back he is having the last word. I will be honest though Im a housewife and mostly at home. I think if left at home for long periods regularly boredom could set in as they are as I said before extrmely intelligent and need stimulation. I was also told to e careful with cats and other small animals but I have had no problem, In fact the cat rules and he is deaf. Rather funny when you see the cat chase the patterdale off… Read Full Review

Written on: 19/03/2008

A fireball of energy, who then collapses absolutely knackered.
Overall, our Patterdale is a very good dog. He is non-violent, friendly and routine-based. He knows when it is time to go to bed etc. He is quite difficult to train, as independent type, but is easily shown who is the boss. He destroys toys, but not furniture. He has perfected a 'I'm feeling really guilty' look for whenever he has done anything bad, so it is hard to be angry with him for more than five seconds.
There is really… Read Full Review

We have had Lula since she was 8 weeks old, she is now 8 months. It's true to say that at times it has been hard work, but the joy she has brought to us makes it well worth it. She is great fun, and is full of character. We take her to puppy training twice a week, which we are making progress in, but as she is very intelligent she does sometimes get bored. She is a typical terrier, in that she is as tough as old boots and is very stubborn. Commands have to be given like you mean them. If done… Read Full Review

We got our patterdale terrier from a rescue home when he was 9 months old. He is now just over a year and we love him to bits. We haven't been able to let him off the lead yet as he wants to play with every human and dog he sees and it's not always apppreciated. He is very energetic but is probably just as happy when he is curled up on his bed next to the radiator as he is when he is out for a walk! Even my 12 year old springer spaniel who has never let another dog near her, seems to… Read Full Review

Written on: 03/03/2007 by amber123 (1 review written)

My patterdale terrier bitch is 1.5 now and she started off great she was attacked a few times as a youngster and I think this is what triggered the aggresion - but I think she may also have a predisposition to aggresion - the house that we got her I didn't have a particularly good feeling about and I suppose - you could almost class her as a very young rescue dog - she was in a really really small cage with about 5 other pups . I am not saying that some of the aggresion is not due to nurture… Read Full Review

Had my male Patterdale Terrier 3 weeks now and he is 10 months old, I love him to bits, he does have a tendancy to square up to other dogs but not all. He is left all day on his own and entertains himself with his toys, he loves squeekies, but cheap ones dont last 5 mins and tougher toys only last 2 hrs before he trys to eat them. He gets a 20 min walk in the morning and 2 x 30 mins walks at night and at weekend a minimum of 2 hrs each day, he is a people person as he loves affection… Read Full Review
