This DVD player from Sony is a good value for the price. It's a small unit with 7 inch sceren, decent audio and basic features of any DVD player such as play, pause, menu, audio, return, options, volume, fast forward/reverse, etc. I do have to agree that the controls could be more sensitive, but are certainly completely functional. It also has a A/V out as well as a headphone jack. It's a bit fat but fairly light and portable. The exterior design has a nice feel to it, it feels better than plain surface.Among my criteria for selecting a DVD player was a good brand, which Sony certainly is. It's been working well for me the few months I've had it. The other criteria for selecting this unit was the battery life. This unit has a 4-hour battery life and so far I can say that my battery has been holding up near that long. I've never actually ran it completely out, but used it for nearly 4 hours on a few occasions and battery still had a bit left in it. The full charge takes nearly 4 hours. There is no doubt that there will be newer and better players coming out with newer features, longer lasting batteries, etc. but overall, this is a great value for the price.

I got my Sony RXD10AV a long time ago, and a few years later I was on the hunt for a DVD player, one with analog 5.1 output, thus the DVP-NS400D appeared.
It took about 3 weeks of changing the settings to get it right, but I did.
I highly enjoy having 5.1 audio (even if it is not optical). The VCD playback is amazing, supporting a picture menu for videos (you need the software to make VCD 2.0).
After a while I added a sub-woofer to spice it up, and it did, big time.
The biggest drawback is the slight 1.5 second pause watching a movie. I assume it is when it goes to the second layer of the DVD. And there is no MP3 playback, but the player is older, and most DVD player's back then didn't have that feature. Besides that, the player is great, the menus are fairly simple, and I love the audio display as it shows the audio play back of the DVD.
Overall, the DVP-NS400D is a must buy if you have other Sony equipment.

I have had a Sony DVP-NS400D player for some while and it has bothered me since I bought it. I have to release my anger and share this...
The player is so slow to figure out the format of the inserted media, e.g. audio CD that it is really, really, anoying. Guess we are speaking around 10 seconds or more.
My expirience with this player has resulted in no further need for Sony products.
DVD image playback is though fine... Sound in both DVD and audio could have been better.

Sony DVP-NS400D DVD Player: I had a similar audio problem but managed to cure it. In the setup for the DVD player it was set to AUTO to automatically detect and select the best sound track available. Unfortunately as the DVD started it detected and stuck in the Prologic mode, I guess this is down to the lower quality sound settings in the DVD disk's menu. I changed the setting from AUTO and the dolby digital signal now goes through to my SONY decoder/amp. Doesn't pick up DTS unless you explicitly select it on the DVD disk sound menu but that was the same with my old player.
Hope this helps

Whether you are a SONY fan or not, the DVP-NS400D is a DVD player that you will not be disappointed with at all. The DVD player is well build with many picture and audio features which bring the movies to life. If you are someone who is researching before buying, then we have something in common, because I spent days researching, reading reviews on this DVD, and I finally became convinced that this is the best DVD in its class, and I was right after using it.

I have a Sony DSP-935 receiver and Bose am-10 speakers. The DVP-NS400D dvd player is hooked up via S-Video and Optical Audio. For some reason, now matter what way I set the dvd player features, the Dolby-5.1 light never lights up on the receiver. I had an earlier DVP-300 DVD unit and this was never a problem. It died last week and the warranty replaced it with the DVP-NS400D.

You're right. It has to do with decoder built in DVD. In that case, the DVD is the one who decodes audio 5.1 signal, not the receiver. (DVP-300 is without Dolby Digital decoder.) You have to disable decoder somehow.
<br>Try to link DVD and receiver via 5.1 analog chinc audio.

I didn't get my Sony DVP-NS400D DVD player from Amazon. I got mine with a hardware multi-region addition - but, that aside...The player itself is marvellous, the menus are very simple, the sound options are superb the block reduction thing is probably only really noticeable by somebody who reviews these things for a living though. CD playback is good, again - probably only a few people will notice that it's not, alledgedly, as good as a normal cd player. I couldn't really tell the difference. Mine's hooked up to a Toshiba 28" widescreen screen and does a wonderful job. Totally pleased with my purchase - and from other reviews of the little brother to this one - the 300 - it would appear that the professional reviewers like it too. There are loads of settings to play with, as I say, the menus are very easy to go through. The remote can control the basics of the telly too - pretty much a very nice, slim DVD player, with enough features to last it into the future (out of the box Dolby 5.1 is pretty neat). AND it's got SONY on the front of it....... :-)

Sony Do It Again! The DVP-NS400D is a great machine, easy to use, sensibly priced and beautiful to look at. If you are not a technical whizz then this is the one for you! Thank you Sony for making life so much easier!

One thing I forgot to mention, in the settings; the speakers distance is a must to be set right. And also the audio DRC, I recommend, should be set to wide. This really kicks up the dynamics, for superior sound.
