“A wonderful holiday was spoiled yesterday 13/10/2010...”

written by on 14/07/2010

A wonderful holiday was spoiled yesterday 13/10/2010 when Ocean Village fell at the last hurdle of getting it's Glasgow passengers to the airport on time to catch the Thomas Cook flight TCX827L home. They got us to Palma airport barely one hour before we were supposed to be in the air. The check in girl was incredibly slow. It took her half an hour to check in three couples and two families of three. The security took half an hour. By the time we cleared there it was after our flight time so we ran to our departure gate to arrive fifteen minutes after take of time. When we boarded we realised the plane was two thirds empty. It took another hour for everyone to board. The plane then lost it's take off slot and we left two hours late. This was the most stressful airport experience we have ever had and it was all the fault of Ocean Village. They can not even blame the traffic as it was fine. We should have begun leaving the ship at 8.35am for a 10.55am flight but nothing happened for 45 minutes. Ocean Village really need to address there timing. I have never seen so many distressed passengers boarding a plane. Everything else was so well organised on the rest of the holiday.

★★★★★

written by ross744 on 29/04/2010

This was my first cruise. Being only 18 I was a bit concerned that the cruise would be rather boring and full of 'older' passengers, however, it was brilliant! There was a great mix of old and young alike.. the entertainment was brilliant, especially the tribute acts and comedian Kevin McCarthy. Food was gorgeous in all places, we mainly ate in the Waterfront restaurant as it was cleaner than Plantation. The Bistro was well worth the extra money, shame James Martin wasn't onboard. The cabins were extremely comfortable and all the staff were extremely cheerful and helpful throughout the cruise, I can definitely see why Ocean Village gets rave reviews for its staff. The flights were great and the luggage transfer even better... check-in your bags at the airport then you dont see them again until later that evening at your cabin!

I would highly recommend Ocean Village to young and old alike :)

I found this review helpful because... we are scheduled to embark on the 16th Aug and any positive reviews are welcome (we were on the dreaded Island Escape last year).

written by on 01/04/2010

We are in our late forties. This was our third caribbean cruise with OV1 - we wanted to celebrate her final visit to the wonderful caribbean. Three and a half thousand pounds (plus) not well spent which is a shame.
Unfortunately, both she and some of the staff seemed very tired and weary.
The ships FEMALE photographers definately needed an attitude adjustment, we watched as they sneered and tutted at older passengers, and constantly made snide comments between themselves when people refused to pose at the end of the gangway e.t.c.
The 'entertainment' team was extremely poor......in the whole 2 weeks only the Annie Lennox tribute (which was the ONLY tribute act) was worth watching.
It seemed like the whole cruise was rather hurried, like the crew & staff wanted the final caribbean cruise overwith. We witnessed one of the lead 'entertainment' team snap at an elderly lady in the lift because she had pressed the wrong button !
We were going to re-book with OV for the Med this summer, we'll be booking with another cruiseline.
NB:
THE CABIN STAFF, BAR STAFF, WAITERS, WAITRESSES AND MAINTENANCE STAFF ARE A CREDIT TO THE SHIP....ALWAYS POLITE AND CONVERSANT AND NEVER TOO BUSY (EVEN THOUGH THEY ALWAYS ARE) TO THROW YOU A SMILE - MANY OF THE CREW, AND OV STAFF SHOULD LEARN FROM THEM !

Our first cruise and we were a little dubious as it was for 23 nights! We were on OV2, the ship was lovely and kept very clean, staff were always friendly and helpful. Some of the entertainment was mediocre but some of it was excellent Robbie Williams and Freddy Mercuty tributes were really good. Food was excellent with plenty of choice, fantastic desserts. We ate at La Luna a number of times because the food was so good and the prices really good. Ports of call were great (St Kitts, Antigua, Dominica, Malaga, Eygypt, Heraklion, Turkey, Palermo, Rhodes, Limassol etc). We enjoyed it so much that we've booked the 25 night repo cruise for October this year, I will be sad to see this brand go to Austrailia

“This was our fist time cruising and was a little...”

★★★★★

written by on 20/08/2009

This was our fist time cruising and was a little concerned from some of the comments we received beforehand about it being 'too' informal. However, we had a fantastic time. You could dress up if you wanted (we did), you could eat when you wanted, do as much or as little as you wanted - it's all about you. We chose to take part in the excursions at every port and we are so glad we did, as these were excellent value for money and very well arranged. We ate in The Bistro once and the food was to die for, however, the food in The Plantation Restaurant was also excellent and so we didn't feel the need to eat in La Luna. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the ship was very clean and tidy. Another good thing was that gratuities/tips were included in your holiday price, so you could tip if you wanted to rather than it being added to your bill automatically. We are now waiting for the Winter 2010 brochure to come out so we can book a 14 night Caribbean cruise.

Went on the Ocean Village I to the carribean over easter for two weeks, the worst holiday i have ever had !! Ended up in hospital suffering with a very severe illness - have since found out was because of the ongoing water trouble onboard ship the whole fortnight. Had a dreadful haircut in the spa hair salon.

I found this review not helpful because...a 57 word review of a 14 night holiday is hardly a review, it gives no information about the ship, food, entertainment or ports it just highlights an illness which is allegedly caused by the ship (how many others became ill) and a bad haircut ..... or she just didnt like it?

We have 3 weeks to go before our cruise on Ocean Village starts. Already we regret booking it. We booked early for a special anniversary and have since discovered that the cruise has since been sold for £1,000 less than we paid. Also, we booked a specific cabin and our booking confirmation confirms this. Now 3 weeks before we leave our cabin has been changed. Ocean Village say they can do nothing about it. They changed it, why can't they change it back.

written by dlwatson on 12/02/2009

Just come down to earth from Ocean Village 2 Caribbean Cruise Jan 21/09 and cannot speak highly enough of my First Cruise, regardless of some of the less than flattering reviews I have read I found my own experience one that has got me ready for my next one. our flight with Thomsonfly was infinitely better than I had expected possibly due to the extra leg room the plane had I think it was an updated version First Choice Holidays flight, as other reviewers comment the food is to die for, far better than any all inclusive packages I have been on, perhaps they should put weighing scales in all rooms, (I gained 8 pounds) but what the heck. all in all a brilliant experience. Exceptional quality of food and staff
Laid back atmosphere, do what you want when you want
Regular updates in newsletter regarding where you are visiting and what is there. Only bad point was having to come home.

“Ocean Village Two, Excellent Caribbean Cruise ”

★★★★★

written by gdsouza208 on 29/12/2008

Ocean Village Two, Excellent Caribbean Cruise
We have just returned from an AMAZING 2 week Caribbean cruise aboard Ocean Village two. We have absolutely NO faults with the ship, service, staff, entertainers, cabins, etc. This was a most memorable cruise you could ever hope to go on.
The ship has a casual feel to it. No need to dress formally for dining etc. The cabins were large, spacious, with plenty of storage space. In the main cabin there are 2 sets of 4 drawers on the bedside cabinets, PLUS at least 14 large drawers next to the hanging rails. On top and below the hanging rails there is plenty of storage for suitcases and larger items. The cabins are all air-conditioned and very light and airy. We were fortunate to have a balcony cabin, but we did see the other cabins and they were just as nice. You also have 2 shelves above the fridge unit for storage. The safe is FREE to use and the cabin actually has a hairdryer by the dressing table mirror, instead of the bathroom, which is a BIG plus. Cabins are cleaned daily by very helpful, hard-working staff who are always cheerful and always greet you with a smile. Towels are provided for the pool and beach as well, so you don't need to bring your own.
The bathroom has 2 bathroom cabinets for your toiletries, as well as a shower rail for shampoos and shower gels. A shelf houses spare toilet rolls and large towels.
There are 4 restaurants on board: Plantation and Waterfront are included in the price and the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD. You MUST try the desserts. They are to die for. ALL meals are plentiful and available 24/7, so you will never be hungry. La Luna is FREE during the day, but in the evenings there is a small charge of £4.75 for a 3 course meal which is well worth the price. This means you get to dine under the stars at night and watch the on-deck shows from the comfort of the restaurant. The Bistro is normally between £12-£15 per head for A la Carte meals cooked by James Martin or his trained chefs.
Entertainment is endless: acrobats, singers, duo's, bands, comedians, magicians, dancers, shows all performed by the ship's entertainment staff, PLUS guest appearances. Whilst we were on board Ailesha Bennett (X-Factor) and Jacki Graham were on board plus comedians Dave Buck, Fogwell Flax, crooner Zac Bauman, Magician Manual Martinez who were all excellent. The resident singers Lisa Core and David Bradley are really good and so are the duo Sass and resident band Jet set. Late night entertainment can be found in the Players Bar on Deck 8 till the early hours of the morning. There is something going on ALL day, so you never get bored. Every night a ships "newspaper" called OUT & ABOUT is put through your door with detailed information about the island you are visiting the next day, plus the ship's programmes and any special offers on board. The shops on board are really cheap as well and sell all the usual necessities as well as luxuries. Sun creams are very cheap to buy on board, so don't waste space in your suitcase.. get it on board.
Captain Vago and his crew work very hard to make your trip very enjoyable and they do a great job. If you have never been on a cruise before, then this is a MUST. Unfortunately, Ocean Village Two will cease cruising the Caribbean next year as she is moving to Australia which is a real shame. We are booking another trip on her before she ceases trading from the UK.
The ships public areas are very clean and well looked after. The sun deck is large (2 decks) and there is plenty of room for everyone to sunbathe. The Karma Spa, Gym and Beauty salon are well worth a visit.
Bar prices are very reasonable (cheaper than pub prices) and there are always drink offers available on board. You can view their prices here: http://www.oceanvillageholidays.co.uk/uploadedFiles/OVH/documents/Casbah%20Menu%20OV2%200708.pdf.
Check out their website as it has prices and details of everything you will need to know about your cruise plus much much more
We did not do any of their planned excursions as we chose to go independently, but my husband and our friend went on 2 of there bike rides which they thoroughly enjoyed.
This really was a trip of a lifetime. Try it for yourself and see.

Friendly staff on deck. Food very plain, treated like cattle on last day! Had to leave cabin at 0830 while cleaners waited outside from 0700! Very expensive for what it was. Will not recommend Ocean Village to my friends.

We enjoyed our holiday to the Caribbean in January 08 we went on the Ocean Village 2. We could not really fault this ship, lovely cabins well kept, showers and fascilities excellent. The food was great. We only went on trips organised by ourselves, and this can be done very cheaply if when you get o/s you match up with others who want to do the same and see the same sights as yourself. very easy, and we are in our seventies so can't afford tp go on the trips (expensive) from the ship. We had a lovely holiday and recommend it to anyone.

“The main plus point was the friendliness of the staff...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 20/08/2008

The main plus point was the friendliness of the staff who really went out there way to help. The cabins were very comfortable with the air conditioning and were cleaned frequently. The showers and wash facilities were good also.

For me overall the entertainment wasn't up to much - cheesy music in my view and karaoke on most nights. There was a casino and cinema on board though I didn't visit often. They did have a comedian on a few nights, I saw one guy and he was really funny - he liked to take the mickey out of some people but maybe not everyones' cup of tea...

The food was quite good but too much of the same stuff over the week - not enough variety especially at breaky time and they didn't have any brown bread (I'm fussy). The ship has 4 restaurants, 2 of them you have to pay in. One restaurant is stamped by James Martin and the food there is tremendous with the prices good for the quality of food (we paid 125 £ for 6 with drinks included though a few on water). It's pretty much 24 hrs eating available if you want it as there is always one or more restaurants open.

The big down side in my opinion was the prices attached to the OV tours at the stop-off destinations and they didn't offer any assistance / advice for those who wished to do there own thing. OV did what they could to get you to part with more cash through their tours. For example, in Tunis, they charged 24 £ to take you on a bus to a beach which was 5 minutes away. Beforehand, OV didn't let on that you could walk to the beach. This was the theme for all stop off jaunts.

The destination tours themselves were way overpriced in my view for what you got. The tour guides tried their best but we just couldn't really follow all of what they said due to the large sizes of the groups and the very limited visiting time available.

The deck every morning / afternoon was mobbed with sun bathers all crammed in like sardines! The captain had to come over the tannoy on the 1st day asking people not to leave towels over the deck chairs.

I think this cruise would appeal to families more than anything as it's more kid orientated but for a twentysomething I'd give it a miss. You can get so much more for your money and see so much more if you organised a trip yourself and that would be my recommendation.

In summary:

BUTLINS ON A BOAT in my opinion.

I was glad to come home.

We just came back from a 2 week Caribbean cruise with Ocean Village 2. It was absolutely fantastic. We went with Ocen Village 1 last year, again to the Caribbean and this was just as good if not better. The ship is lovely and clean, the staff are absolutely amazing. They all work so hard to make it a lovely holiday. The food is amazing, all in all it was such a good holiday. We are in our early 40's and we took our 2 daughters 17 and 18 with us on this cruise and they loved it too. The age group was quite a good mixture and it was not full of old people like some people say!! Anyone who can find a fault with Ocean Village 1 or Ocen Village 2 must just be really miserable and fussy !! Well done Ocean Village, keep up the good work and can't wait for Ocean Village 3.

written by on 19/04/2008

Food, service general value for money. Holiday camp bingo type atmosphere.
Some excursions overcharged e.g. swim with Dolphins, pay direct cost per head £40, pay Ocean Village £90! Ocean direct justified their overcharging by saying all Cruise Operators do this and most of their customers would not be prepared to go it alone.
