“Love it but this is not your average Curry”

★★★★☆

written by Russ_P on 15/02/2012

I have eaten at Lasan several times since it opened about 10 years ago Following on from Ramsays acclaim in the F-word it has become busier. The first time we ate there after the F-word, the food was very good but service was lacking a little. The 2nd time, the service was vastly improved and once again the food was excellent. The cooking is top notch and the variety of fish and alternative meats (beef, venison, seabass etc) is unlike your usual curry house. This is Indian fine dining and with it comes more of a cost but the spicing is far more complex than a conventional Birmingham Balti. I recommend having something different to what you may ordinarily order when going to your local Indian. We Look forward to our the next meal there. Yum

“We went to this restaurant, based on the hype...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/09/2010

We went to this restaurant, based on the hype developed by the F word and Gordon Ramsay.

In a nutshell. The worst indian/asain restaurant/food we have eaten/visited in Birmingham! I am being polite by this.

The slowest service imaginable. The blandest of foods. The most overpriced menu................

For example - we ordered a meat platter starter for two. The food was cold, we were provided with two thimble sized sauces to compliment the food. One sweet the other seasoned yogurt. (Lasan dont do any other sauce, spicy sauce is not availble). We did ask for more sauce, after the original amount finished in about 1 minute. We waited and waited, but hunger did get the better of both of us, and we ate our food. The sauce then did arrive and the waiters reasoning, we have to make this thimble sized sauce fresh to order..................please.

Dont waste your money or time.

“We watched the F word and decided to visit this...”

We watched the F word and decided to visit this restaurant over May the bank holiday weekend.
It took a long time to get through to make a booking and we were informed the restaurant was fully booked for dinner until august and they could only squeeze us in at 1pm on the sunday so we gladly took the table. We informed them that we would have a 5 month old baby with us.
We arrived in what can only be described as an industrial area and found the hotel. It was deserted. There were only 2 other people in the restaurant. We only saw 5 other people throughout our 2 hour lunch. The decor was ok but the chairs were worn out and my glass was dirty.
We sat down and started to look through the menu. It seemed very over priced, quite limited and to be honest not very original or modern.
Our baby was in his car seat and wanted to be taken out so he started to moan a bit. Within 30 seconds, the front of house man came over and told my husband to take the baby outside and come back in when he had quietened down!
Don't get me wrong. I hate crying/screaming babies in public places as much as the next person but our baby wasn't being loud, disruptive or an inconvenience.
We have been to many top Michelin starred restaurants including Nobu, Benares, Tamarind and Simpsons with our baby and we have never ever been treated so rudely.
The food was average in taste and below average in presentation. The only saving grace were the desserts - yummy and well presented. This restaurant should not get a Michelin star next year as it is not coming even close to the standards achieved by other Michelin star restaurants we have visited.
Do not bother going here if you have babies or children as you will not be made to feel welcome.
No atmosphere due to lack of diners and the fact that the locals don't eat at this restaurant should give a clue as to it's poor reputation.
Please don't waste your money and your time. Go to Benares or Tamarind in London for great Indian food or Simpsons in birmingham for a truly outstanding meal.

“Yet another Indian restaurant which focuses on style...”

★☆☆☆☆

Yet another Indian restaurant which focuses on style but with no substance whatsoever. What is it with Indian restauranteurs, they simply think by hanging wall art and serving food in fine china is the recipe for a good Indian meal.

I ate at the Lasan Eatery with my wife last Saturday and was so disappointed with the two dishes we receieved. The Achari lamb dish I ordered looked like a bowl of Campbells mushroom soup stirred through with some meat and onions. The taste wasn't an improvement either. The second dish was a jalfrezi. It looked like a curry but tasted like something a student with no time or ingredients could have cooked in 5 minutes. It lacked in any real flavour and when I complained they merely added a few green chillies into the sauce and re-served.

I say down with these fancy fusion Indian restaurants and bring back traditional restaurants that put more focus on the food they serve than what top end magazines they can appear in.

I found this review helpful because...me, my husband and couple of our friends are planning to visit this place after watching them on the 'F' Word but I'm going to think twice before I make a decision on going.

“I went to Lasan for my boyfriend's birthday in June...”

★★★★☆

written by nedbrab on 20/10/2008

I went to Lasan for my boyfriend's birthday in June and we had a nice time. I chose badly and didn't enjoy my main course, but that was not the restaurant's fault! We both had delicious starters. My boyfriend had two main courses because he doesn't like rice or naan and there were two mains he couldn't decide between! So, when we came to pudding the waiter jokingly brought a second pudding for my boyfriend because he'd ordered the two mains! We sat upstairs and it was nice and romantic even though it was a Sunday lunchtime. I'd eaten here before and would eat here again but only for special occasions as the bill (with drinks but without wine) came to £90.
