Small light portable ( does what it says on the tin ! ) ... Had memory card reader very handing if you have mobile phones, camera etc and want to listen to music or view pictures back in your hotel room. Can be converted into an in car DVD player picture flipped upside down to be a roof mounted monitor... If Toshiba had brought this out at any other time this would be the must have gadget... but released at a time when mobile phones started to get good quality for films and the Sony PSP came out etc...
I regularly use it in the bathroom for a good soak put a couple movies on ... picture qulity is excellent
Be varned the volume on this is loud v loud !

The first time I played a original dvd it worked, then I played a recorded dvd it worked !! great. I played a music vcd it worked. The next day i played the same recorded dvd, it said NO DISC and after that it just plays hide and seek. I would recommend someone to carry their cd's along with them and have it checked in the shop.

The hinges on my Toshiba SD-P1700 that allow you to open and close the dvd player are weak and break very easily! and BEWARE! Toshiba has not honoured their warranty! I found out the hard way!!!!
If you have this model be very careful when opening and closing the dvd player! We will never again purchase a Toshiba product!

“The Toshiba SD-P1700 is an excellent portable DVD...”

The Toshiba SD-P1700 is an excellent portable DVD player, with superb picture and sound quality. The unit comes with a neat remote, good quality 'neck-style' cans, a substantial carry case, and hook-up cables (including a car cigarette lighter power cord). The battery lasts for ages and clips onto the bottom of the player, which reduces the overall footprint and makes for first class stability on less-than-flat surfaces, like chair backs and pillows.

This design also allows for a slight gap between the bottom of the player and the battery, which lets air through and prevents that part of the player normally in contact with your lap (the underside) from getting hot after prolonged use.

This is a big problem on some other machines I have had with rear-mounted batteries. Whereas on the SD-P1700 it's actually the bottom of the battery that sits on your lap, not the underside of the player, which offers a much cooler experience.

Video CD's are supported, and the SD-P1700 has a card reader that accepts MMC, SD, XD and MS cards. DIVX movies stored on such media will play just as well as any DVD from a disk. You can also view JPG photographs from cards and present them as slide shows. But if music is more your bag, then this little gem cuts the mustard with MP3's and audio CD's too.

I only have two personal gripes:

1. Three homemade DVD's that play fine on all my other players, both set top and portable, do not play well on this unit. I don't know why.
2. When you power down the SD-P1700, it does not appear able to remember where it was on the disk and return there after being powered up again. I've scanned the manual for details of such a facility, but I can not find any, which is a shame for me. Otherwise, I love the SD-P1700 portable DVD player, and I suggest you put it high on your shortlist.

Full specs are available on the Toshiba UK web site, but please note:- My SD-P1700 definitely has 'two' headphone sockets (and not just the 'one' as stated by Toshiba).

Happy viewing.

Martin99's Response to martin99's Review

Written on: 20/09/2009

Over three years on from the date of first purchase (July 2006) this DVD player has stopped working properly. Now it is treating all commercial DVDs in the same way it was initially treating home-made ones: lots of freezes and failures to recognise disks that my other portable DVD players play perfectly. In addition, all SD card movie files are suffering from the same problems. The player is now unusable and fit only for the trash.A brief search on the Net has revealed other users with almost identical issues on SD-P1700.

So it seems that what was originally perceived as a fine piece of kit has turned out to be something of a lemon. I wouldn't mind so much if this player had been used a lot. But it's only had casual use. Therefore it should definitely have lasted longer than it clearly has.
