I Had Not Seen The Original Omen So When I Went To

I had not seen the original Omen so when I went to see this remake had no expectations of the previous films so no expectations of what the film would be like. I did quite enjoy this film, wouldn't say it was a "must see" but I did enjoy watching it. However at times, was unrealistic and not very believable...for example when the child (Damien!) didn't support his mother (I know he's the devils child but this woman brought you up and in the world have some gratitude!) and how no one was particularly surprised by the random presence of dogs in the house one day.

I went to see this film with someone who had seen the original making of the film and they admitted they were disappointed with it, I don't think I would've understood it if I hadn't gone to see it with someone who had seen it the original before hand as bits of it had to be explained as it wasn't explained in the film. E.g. when they went to see the monk who had given the child away, he had no vision in his left eye and was deformed, my friend explained this to me and said it was explained why this occurred in the original but not in the remake. I thought this was a bit pointless putting it in if there was no explanation to why, as it wouldn't have made a difference!

I think all in all the makers of this film expected you to have seen the first one which wasn't the case and therefore I didn't enjoy it as much as maybe I would have done if id have known the story before I went to see it.

I'm glad I saw it but I don't think id see it again, for those who haven't seen it I think its one to rent or borrow the DVD of a friend! (Or better still see the original!)

Once In A While You Look Forward To Seeing A Movie

Once in a while you look forward to seeing a movie remake. In your twisted imagination you think it will be better. Improved storyline, better acting, better effects. Then while you watch the movie an incredible sense of deja-vu comes over you and you wonder why you are wasting your money. I did anyway.

The Omen 2006 is one of those movies. It only just manages to stay on the right side of the line between identical and revamped. An instantly forgettable cast makes sure that this movie will sink without trace. Hooray.

The movie starts off with an astronomer peering through a large telescope at the stars. He then looks up and we can see from his expression that :

1. He is suffering a bad attack of wind.

2. He's realised its a terrible movie

3. Something is wrong in the sky.

It turns out to be the latter and we are next treated to a few panic stricken priests discussing the meaning. From here on it's pretty much the same as the original movie. The wife of Robert Thorn, the deputy American ambassador has given birth .When Thorn arrives he is told the child died but Ms Thorn doesn't know. Thorn arranges with the doctors to present his wife with another baby (Damien) who's mother died giving birth so she will think it's hers. This is the American ambassador were talkng about here. Anyway the child grows up a bit and looks nothing like either of them but Ms Thorn doesn't appear to notice.

They move to England and the kid has a large scale birthday party in the grounds of the Thorn (subsidised) mansion. Unfortunately the party atmosphere is spoilt a bit by Damien's (the kids) nanny chucking herself off a high ledge with a rope round her neck. This scene is almost the same as the original movie except at the end of the drop, her shoe comes off and smashes into the food table below, ruining the tablecloth.

At the same time, Damien is waving to a large dog in the distance. Now if you wanted a creepy looking dog in a movie you may tend to use a Rottweiler like they did in the first movie. This time it's a German Shepherd (which mysteriously changes into a Rottweiler later in the movie) and it looks so friendly that you feel like asking it if it wants a biscuit. Soon afterwards another nanny turns up (the kids official horned guardian) and Thorn is annoyed with her about the dog being in the house.

Thorn arrives at his office next day, knocks a photographers camera to the ground which he offers to pay for, but surprisingly it continues to work for the rest of the movie. It seems also that he has a visitor who needs to see him urgently about Damien, and surprise , surprise, it's none other than the caretaker from the 'Dark Water' movie , who has now become a priest. After a few dire warnings about Damien, he leaves.

Well the movie carries on like this, the same (nearly) as the original only the original was better. The priest meets Robert in the park.. There is a storm and he runs to the church. He gets spiked by part of the church tower falling . We also get to see Damien knock his 'mother' off a chair while changing some hanging flowers above the second landing, causing her to fall over the edge to the ground. He does this by riding his scooter into the chair she is standing on. The only difference is the other version had him riding a three wheeled trike. Obviously she winds up in traction. Robert meets up with the photographer and they visit the priests apartment where the walls are papered with pages from the bible, and after pointing out some 'extras' in his photos they decide to go abroad to find out what is going on.

Unfortunately Ms Thorn gets murdered by the childs nanny while he is away, and the photographer gets his head chopped of by a falling sign. Yawn, When Thorn gets back to England and the mansion he has a fight with Mrs Baylock and kills her. She is trying to protect Damien and Thorn wishes to kill him in the church. He gets away with the boy but also gets shot by the police when he refuses to stop what he is doing.

So everyone's dead at the end except Damien who finds a foster father in a high ranking government official and I sincerely hope there are not going to be any remakes of the other 'Omen'movies.

Mia Farrow who played Rosemary in 'Rosemarys Baby' plays the nanny, Mrs Baylock. She just isn't evil enough to be convincing. The kid who plays Damien is creepy from the start, unlike Harvey Stevens, (who played Damien in the original and has a cameo role in this one as a reporter), who seemed quite a nice little kid at first. Save your money and wait for the video, (it won't be long I promise)
