I've had this laptop for quite sometime and it has worked it's way through out these years but now since the battery's dead I constantly have to make sure that my system doesn't overheat so most of my programs don't crash in the making but I'm soon getting a replacement battery, hopefully one with a longer battery life, so that should resolve the problem. The laptop is VERY durable and rarely breaks, I have a chip in the back of the screen where it turns to open and close but it still runs perfectly fine. Overall the Acer Aspire 1640 Series is a fine laptop but Acer could have done a better job with the battery and maybe a better fan for the system so that it doesn't overheat as easily as it does. I would not recommend this laptop to anyone other than those who wish to do some extensive hardware updates and changes, but if you do buy this laptop I would recommend getting a replacement battery, a good antivirus program (maybe AVG or Avas NEVER Norton, they create their own viruses), one of those portable cooling fans that you can leave on your lap, and a backup mouse cause sometimes the mouse just spazzes out.

The Acer Aspire 1640 has been an amazing machine for me!
I have droped mine millions of times nad It works fine! I have had it for over 4 years and its perfect. the reason you guys are having problams is because you use yours 24-7 and I use mine maybe 2-6 hours a day you are over doing the battery!!!
no I am writing the review from my laptop right now!!!!!!!

The Acer Aspire 1640 series is the worst thing I ever bought. Within a couple of months I had to take it to be repaired under warranty as the mouse pad wasn't working properly. The left button didn't click and the button had to be pressed really hard to use the mouse. Got it back again and the problem reoccurred. Then the connection to the power adaptor broke so that I couldn't even charge it. It had always had shocking battery life so I had relied upon being able to plug it in. Good thing I had taken out extra warranty so that i could send it away to be repaired AGAIN. I have got it back and now the cursor freezes so I can't use the mouse and to use the keys I have to press them really hard. I would not recommend this laptop to anyone. Am now going to have to send it away yet again to be repaired.

My Acer Aspire 1640 has a mysterious green line down the screen, power chord sounds like its going to explode when it's plugged in, very rarely charges successfully when plugged in. only 2 years old. just bought a Dell... never again Acer.

well, for me my Acer Aspire 1640 never let me down whether in home or aboard. to be honest i love my machine. when i had a heated argument with my girlfriend a year ago i smashed it on the wall. amazing thing is only the battary came off. it took 2 days for me to put my hand on my machine and guess what it was working as it was new. since the time i bought, its running 24/7 nd never made me disappointed. if anyone ask me for the recommendation i definately recommend for Aspire 1640.

I have a Acer 1640 and have had no problems the last 4 years i have had this! It runs 24-7 here at home and has been all over the world with me! I drove truck and this used to be sitting on my dash of the truck bouncing around and has never skipped a beat! Have upgraded my ram to the max 2 gig wich is plenty! You want more then get a more expensive laptop! For burning......well i have probably burnt over 400 cd/dvd and it still burns as good as day one. All in all a great lap top and has not failed me yet and if it does....well i have got my money worth and will for sure purchase another one!

Good Specs for Price, Good Integrated Graphics. Nice screen in price bracket.
Easy to swap hard drive out.
Good size keyboard.
Good power management software.
Dual layer dvd writer a bonus at the time.
Good value laptop, with decent specs for the price.
Plays games better than some more recent laptops in the price range.
Not the most powerful laptop, but can stutter its way through more complex tasks.
Ram upgrade to 2gb will improve performance I think.

The Acer Aspire 1640 series has worked rather well for me the past 3 years that I've had it. The only two real problems I've had is the pathetically short battery life and the power cord connection in the back of the laptop is bad for me (causes the screen to flash when attempting to connect to wall outlet). Therefore I do not recommend the Acer 1640 laptop.

I had one issue, the screen went black about 11 months into the 1 year warranty. ACER replaced it and I've had no issues since. I've had the machine 3 years. Had a Toshiba Satellite beforehand and I like the ACER much more. Most notebooks do not have the ability to record stereo (turn LP's into MP3's) and this one does so perfectly. Big bonus over the rest. DVD burns and plays are fantastic. I am just now replacing the battery... it never gave the 2 hours 20 minutes advertised. Anxious to see what I get with the new one off-brand one on order for only 35 bucks. I am just now looking into upgrading the Hard Drive for more storage capacity. I've used this notebook daily and so I have to say after all this time it's been a good buy. I like it much more than my employer issues Aspire 5520 mainly due to the new models inferior mouse pad, layout that makes hitting the pad in error which deletes all your work, and the sharp edged ridge cutting into your wrists, the 1640 is far more ergonomic. However, the AC power plug must be wiggled at the back of the notebook often to keep the connection going which bugs me a lot.

It has a big screen and good quality works good when it warms up. Takes a long time to load and dies quickly and flashes when the plug gets loose takes a long time to download and get to websites. You have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to work good. Overall, i would give the Acer Aspire 1640. 6 out of 10

I got this laptop for my birthday in June with a 1 year warranty. In July of the following year the AC adapter broke and I did not bother fixing it. My Mum brought the same series and after the warranty expired hers also broke the exact same way.

Graphics not too bad, I have big hands so the keyboard design is ok as I can rest my hands on the machine & not worry about pressing keys accidentally. The main negative point with the Acer Aspire 1640 is I have major issues with the sound, it keeps "stuttering" same with video. had to reload original settings in order to stop. Will not buy another acer product, in fact have told two friends looking to buy laptops not to even think about buying one.

I won this in a competition so it was a good price. But came with a useless amount of ram and had to upgrade. A few months ago its would not turn on or react in any way. I tried everything, and no response. So took it to a computer shop and was told it was a HDD error or coruption or something and would need to pay $$250 for new HDD and labor. So decided to buy my own HDD and do it myself. Upon arriving home my laptop was in its laptop bag and the metal clip broke and the laptop fell from about my waist hight onto the ground. so took it out and tested it, and love a behold it worked perfect and have not had a single problem or complaint since!

Ii had problem with the hdd so I sent it back, after 3 months I had to do it again the next time I was out of warranty, I got told to bad!
I bought a new hdd and that fixed that problem,
About 6 months latter the dvd burner went cant find one so called acer, what a joke, no credit card no fix!
I have since thanked them for wasting my time and money, well the next thing ill post is this lap top being smashed!

I personally am really disappointed with the Acer Aspire 1640, its not good at all for me, the battery, the quality of the screen, the memory storage, the keyboard, everything is not worth the money. Infact I cant think of one bad thing to say about it, do not recommend this laptop.

The problems are the software thats loaded on the Aspire 5633.
Combined with Vista I think its useless. So Ive decided after a call to Acer that this thing isnt worth the bother.
I think the Aspire is got to be worth the starting price of 0.99p on ebay if I am lucky for spares. After clocking up just over 32 hours of use.
Good riddens to my Acer laptop.

And sometimes when I am using the laptop it's stops working and it is strange because I have to remove the battery and plug it on ac power. And I recommend you not to buy it.
