My daughter had one of these Hotpoint WD640 and the One-shot thermostat failed having previously heat damaged some clothes. I investigated and replaced the one-shot and my analysis revealed that the hot air outlet vent at the top of the door opening is at an angle to the right. The door has a sloping portion that I assume is meant to deflect the warm air into the drum. However, since the sloping part is at the top of the door this causes the air opening to be partly obscured. This results in a restriction to the airflow and since the same amount of heat is input to the airstream the temperature of the air going into the drum is higher than it should be. The earlier model WD64 has the hot air outlet at the top of the drum and this has a good match. It appears to me that Indesit has used the same door as the WD64 in their WD640 model. They should have used a different door with the sloping part rotated to the right. I wrote to Indesit and they replied saying that the design was correct and that they had no records of failures.

I rented a place that had one of these and I fell in love with it. As soon as I was in a position where I needed to buy a washing machine I bought this one. I love it. Regular use for general use (non colourfast cotton), work clothes (synthetics) and relatively regular hand wash and handwash wool usage. Not used the dryer part for a long time to be honest but used to use it a lot when I had less radiator space. It has survived the fire escape to one flat, and down again, the fire escape to another and down again, a storage locker for about 9 months and all the jostling and craziness that involved moving it to and from there and trying to not crush it with something else. It then survived a move to a 4th floor walk up. From there it has remained loyal to me with so many washloads and never once, literally not once, ruining/running colours in my clothes... although of course the choice of detergent is also a big factor there. Now, just under 2 years since my last move and 8.5 years since I bought it, it's started to leak. It's been getting louder recently (from starting as practically silent...) and finally it decided to leak from underneath yesterday. I am gutted that it's no longer available and that the newer versions do not have the much needed handwash option. I would recommend this model to anyone as a washer. I think I have only used the dry function once in the last couple of years as I needed something urgently. Great, reliable and long lasting.

Taken this thing for granted over the past 6 years. Do three full loads a week, always on 40 temp and hardly ever use the dryer so it's maybe had an easy life with me. Can't fault it though. Live in a hard water area too! Selling it on eBay as I'm sure it has life left yet.

Brilliant machine. I'm surprised that all the other reviewers have been so negative...perhaps I'l lucky and just have the only perfect machine they made....though I doubt that somehow. Only one repair visit so far and that was due to the filter needing cleaning, other than that it has worked like a dream. It's used heavily and by that I mean at least 5 days a week. Fingers crossed nothing will go wrong now that I have written the review. My only gripe about the machine would be that the lettering on the outside of the detergent tray telling you the wash cycles is now nearly obliterated.

Thank God it's finally packed up for good and can get another machine. Owned the WD640 for 3 years and pretty much from day one it has been nothing but grief. The filter is horrendous to empty, located at the back. Albeit does get quicker with experience. Without fail this machine would break down twice/thrice a year. Circuit boards have been replaced as have pumps, mostly when just out of warranty, so it could possibly be a new machine inside with the amount of parts that have been used to cobble it together. All these new parts and labour have been replaced by a Hotpoint 'Service' Engineer (Misnomer in its self) Things got so expensive, but not enough at time to scrap machine and buy another, I signed up for extended warranty. This offset the additional work cost, but what a sauce having to fork out for a machine that was relatively new and never overloaded or run incessentantly. If you are unlucky enough to own one of these take out every guarantee you can get. Take your clothes to the launderette cheaper and less aggro!

Had this machine for two and a half years or so, never had problems with it. Dryer not very brill, but most washer dryers suffer in this way. Washes well, on nearly every day, often more than once. Only time it made a weird noise was when my husband left some washers in his overall pocket.....Admittedly, filter hard to empty, but other than that, no complaints.

Had this machine for 6 years, no dryer after 1 year as 'circit board' blown, water leaking from soap dispenser, even though it is all cleaned out. Leaves marks on clothes, does not switch to rinse cycle. Worst machine I have ever had, would not recommend this to anyone!

I have owned this Hotpoint Aquarius+ WD640 for at least 5 years and never had any problems. Even survived 3 house moves, and an accident prone user!
Yes the filter at the back of the appliance and fiddly removal is a design problem but that is the only downside I can think of.
I don't know about other users on this review site who state they have to regularly keep emptying the filter....I have only ever needed to empty it once the whole time I have owned it, and I use it alot with uniform for work for my partner and myself that needs thorough cleaning. There again I always make sure to check pockets first....just a tip!
It's quiet, easy to use and energy efficient for a washer dryer, with a decent load capacity that only now could be beaten with new models on the market.
In fact I am now loaning it to my mum after her Indesit which she was pleased with until it brokedown over Christmas. She can't get over the difference with my Hotpoint and is considering a new version of it for herself.
A definite 4 out of 5.

my Hotpoint washer dryer had broken down in just the first month, and 3 more times after that. so much grief that this has given me in order to get it fixed. now, after nearly three years the manufacturer is charging me for repairs, even though it is under 5 years guarantee. would never recommend this product to anyone.

Lack of filter on front means having to turn machine on its side and remove bottom drain to clear blockages, at least 3 times/year. Also, drier safety cut-out blows on high temperature in air heater. I have dismantled my own machine and found ashes from burned fluff inside the air heater. There is no dust/fluff filter in air circuit which is a serious design flaw in my opinion. Replacing it with premium brand !

I have to say without a doubt this has to be the worst washing machine i have ever owned.
I have had it a grand total of 18 months and in that time i have had to call out the engineer 11 times and had a total of 8 new parts.
Faults ranged from filters being blocked (sounds simple enough until you find out where the filter is !) to water pouring out the drawer and flooding my kitchen twice, once after it had been "fixed"
The only advise i can offer is if you are going to buy this machine then make sure you take out the extra service cover, you are going to need it.

I have had this Hotpoint WD640 machine for over three years now and have had no problems whatsoever (touching wood as I don't want to jinx myself!). It is on almost every single day, sometimes three or more times a day. It copes with delicate hand-wash items and muddy childrens clothing. I thoroughly recommend this machine and would happily buy another. Perhaps, as one reviewer pointed out, people only leave comment if they are unhappy.

The most gut-wrenching issue for me with the whole Hotpoint ownership was the fact that my Mum bought it for my wife and I as a wedding present 4 years ago. From memory it had problems in its first year which lead to me buying extended warranties in all subsequent years. I would never normally buy extended warranties and this is the only product I have ever bought where I have bought one. If you don't have one buy one quick or keep your figures crossed hard! The faults which occurred covered just about everything I think the most irritating being the dryer has completely failed several times ( a right pain when you have a young child). It has also gone down with various faults, circuit board failures, very noisy, water coming out through the tray. In 4 years of ownership I believe it has been repaired in the region of a dozen times. I would never normally have stuck it out for this long but I felt I owed it to my Mum as it was a present. I would have absolutely no hesitation in saying to anyone do not touch this product with the proverbal bargepole.

Had this machine nearly 3 1/2 years and had repair engineer out at least 3 times a year every year so far. have extended insurance which has been a godsend as i just couldnt afford to have it repaired as often as it has been. constant problems with dryer unit failing, engineer told me last time it couldnt be replaced again as they dont make the part anymore. Had to call them again today, was making loud metallic noises and smelling of electrical burning - great christmas eve in waiting for the repair engineer to call again!

Well, I ordered a replacement pump from partmaster for my WD640 - £17.99 plus delivery next day. Fitted it in ten minutes, and guess what??? - The machine is working better than ever. I know some of you guys have had bad experiences, but honestly, in 5 years of having this machine, this is the only problem it has given me, and was very easily solved. Thanks to everyone on here that helped me to identify what the problem fault code was. Happy that I have got my undies out!

well, its finally happened to my Hotpoint WD640 in a big way. Fault F-05 !!! - I have removed the hose from the bottom of the drum and cleared that out, and yes there was some bits in there. Cleaned out the hose, put it all back together. Still same fault. Checked the pump and took that apart, all clear. Guess the pump may not actually be pumping as no water coming out! Well, Ive ordered a replacement pump today to try that and if it works great, but if not, the machine is going to get a real smashing!!! Its still got all my calvin klein underwear in it !!!!!! and can I get the door to open??? no!!!

Very poor customer service. Started throwing up water, customer service told us it was our fault due to washing at 30 degrees! managed to get them to fix it under warranty eventually - service man cleaned filter which solved it just long enough for the warranty to expire.private repair guy said pump broken and should have been replaced when fixed previously. will never buy hotpoint again.

I am a single person so I just use my washing machine once or twice per week. However, my Hotpoint WD640 has needed two major repairs in two years. The first one took place just three months after I bought and the second one, less than two years later. On both accasions the whole circuit board had to be changed,. It is a very difficult machine to fix so your local washing machine service won't be able to do the job, Therefore, you have to contact Hotpoint if you have any trouble with the machine. This can be quite expensive! My sister bought exactly the same machine almost at the same time as I did. She has experienced lots of problems with it as well.

You must be incredibly lucky to have bought just about the only reliable Hotpoint Washing Machine ever made! Being that lucky were you the person who also won the £113 million on the Euromillions recently?
