This place is in a perfect location. Gordon Ramsay tried his best to fix it but it looks like the food has changed. The food I had was mostly rock hard and over cooked. The service was poor, despite the fact no one but me and my family was there. The staff were all a bit tacky. The food was horrible.
DO NOT GO THERE.

What we've got here is an absolutely beautiful setting, with some good, simple, British food; no faffing about. Giving the locals what they want, and better than the pretentious tosh they used to serve. Rustic food! Fantastic.

I would go to The Granary again, but never in a large table head count, as food arrived at different times.

The Granary in Fareham is an 18th century listed building, set in landscaped gardens with plenty of outdoor seating. There is ample parking, although the car park is shingle, which makes it difficult for wheelchair users. It's easy to find at the top of Whiteley Lane; about 5 minutes drive from junction 9 of the M27.
Inside there is an intimate, modern feel. The tables are closer together than depicted on the website, which made it noisy later in the evening as the restaurant filled.
You can see the menus on the website www.granarydining.co.uk, as well as sumptuous pictures of the interiors. The food was quite good, and imaginative, with a commendable leaning towards local produce - for example New Forest ice cream and Hampshire watercress. Starters were from £5 - £6, mains £10 - £15 and puddings £4 - £5, with a handsome selection of wines to complement.
Service was prompt but gauche, and perhaps lacked strong leadership, but overall the experience was a pleasant one.
Would we go back? Possibly.
Would we take friends? Again possibly, but not as a first choice.

Could be a great mid-price restaurant, but needs attention to fine details like improving turn out and skills of waiting staff. Obviously someone in the kitchen can cook, but let down by very poor veg. Get rid of the tacky menus and plastic place mats - these don't fit in with the obvious effort that's gone into the interior design of the restaurant.

Hi arteater,

Having just read your review I whole heartedly agree with you. The comments about the decor are interesting because as far as I am aware this is the existing decor from the previous venture that this building played host to, a private members club. From what I have heard there haven't been many changes since then. I also totally agree with you on the plastic mats and menus as this was the same comment we made when first sitting down, it is a poor first impression but does live up to the rest of the experience. There are much nicer places to eat in the area as I am sure you are aware.

Service was so poor with one member of staff leaning over the length of the table causing it to slide along the floor. Some of the dishes were not to my liking. When I complained about the overall meal, I don't feel I was listened to.

The Granary offers excellent value for money and quality food and it is set in a pleasant surrounding. Also the lavatories are absolutely spotless. Watch this place, I don't think that it will be too long before you'll need to make your reservation some weeks in advance!

The Granary served us overcooked food served on cold plates in a cold environment at a snails pace.

I agree with this review because...

I had exactly the same experience, pasta was so overcooked I couldn't pick it up with a fork as it just fell apart. I have never had such bad service from miserable people making comments about diners. Utterly disgraceful and doesn't deserve a good review.
