“Best fun you can have with your clothes on”

★★★★★

Just bought my 53 MR2 Mk3 a few weeks ago and I cant stop driving it. In the looks department its pretty cool, with a factory fitted T.T.E pack which includes a big chrome roll over bar, side and rear skirts, twin chrome exhausts, also includes a matching hard top which gives it a smooth coupe look when its fitted. Red leather seats and black 5 spoke alloys finish it off nicely. All round its a neat little two seater. Performance...now this is where it gets really interesting. The MR2 only has a 1.8 cc engine lifted straight out of the Toyota Celica, where to be honest its a pretty uninspiring lump of do do's but.... put it into a car weighing less than 1000 kg and its a different matter all together. This VVTi alloy block 4 cyl engine will rev until it wets its pants, pushing the car forward in an every increasing surge of naughtiness. marry that to just about the best handling of any mid engined two seater on the road and you have a sports car that will make you giggle even before you turn the key. The twin exhausts just make you want to blip the throttle just to hear the music that comes from somewhere behind your left ear. Drop the easy to handle rag top which folds neatly into the space behind the seats and you are in motoring heaven. Practical it is not, with only two small cubbys behind the seats and an even smaller space under the front hood this aint no load hauler, but if that's what you want then buy a van. This is a small two seat fun monkey, bags of sillyness and cheap as chips to buy, own, and keep. I also owned one of the fastest production bikes in the world and since buying the 2 I haven't ridden it once. People get one of these you will not regret it.

Just got back from an 18 day tour of France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland, Belgium and back into France before catching the boat back to Blighty. Really surprised at how much we could pack into the car, true we are long term bikers so used to travelling light and I do have a number of items specifically because they pack up real small i.e. micorfibre towels etc. but nonetheless, we had no problems fitting all the stuff we needed into the car and we had a blast. So perhaps the one star for practicality is a bit mean, give it 6.

Got the Toyota MR2 back in 2001 (rev 3 gts hard top) 34k on the clock, px old MK1 for it, the best decision I have ever made, a car that simply makes you want to drive for the sheer hell of it, a car that confused the hell outta some bloke in his Evolution iv as to why he couldnt pass me....40% hike in power perhaps??? Noble M12 for me next I think or NSX type R.

I waited 12 weeks for a yellow Toyota MR2. Faults from day 1. Toyota dealership utterly useless. Car now unsafe to drive thanks to Toyota inefficiency. Cannot sell it for what I owe on the finance. Avoid Toyota finance deals and their cars like the plague.

Why is your car unsafe to drive and what year is your vehicle. I have a 2001 Toyota spyder and my car is unsafe to drive. The steering wheel locks up while driving and the dealership won't fix it. Toyota dealerships "utterly useless" you can say that again. Please let me know.

Not had a single problem with mine. Nor have many others who own these cars. Getting a bad car blows, you need to know your rights and the laws of your state.

I also have a newer MR2 Spyder which I feel is unsafe to drive. The SMT 6 trans will frequently pop out of gear ( impossible the dealer says) yet it has happened several times to both me and my wife. Sometimes the engine will die and be unable to be re-started. Many other problems....

Maybe you want to review your consumer laws, or maybe you should check the small print before you sign on the dotted line. If the goods are of unsaleable quality the dealer should provide a replacement or a full refund. You dont need to swollowe evey porky pie they tell you-stick up for your rights.
Please note that Toyota vehicles are normally amongst the most reliable - check the JD Powers surveys.
If there is a fault, any Toyota dealership in the UK will soon rectify it - provided that you stick to, and respect, the rules - and you make them know that you are fully aware of your rights. <br>MR2DC member.
