affleck's review of 28 Weeks Later

“I couldn't wait for this film to come out, I just love...”

I couldn't wait for this film to come out, I just love a gory horror/suspense film. I was a big fan of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and I hoped that this film would be half as good.

The film itself starts off at a time when the "rage" infection is still active, "the infected" are still at large and are looking for their next bit of neck.

A group of people are hold up in a cottage in a small village, their meal is interrupted by a boys screams at the door so they let him in. But unfortunately this leads to the infected also getting in causing chaos, reminding the audience of the quickness of the infection, and the savageness of the infected.

Robert Carlisle's character escapes, leaving his wife behind to die.

The film then moves to 28 weeks later, all of the infected have starved to death and Britain is deemed to be safe enough to be re-inhabited. The Isle of Dogs in London has been designated District 1, a heavily guarded compound where an American led team aim to start to get the Country back up and running.

Everything is running smoothly until the security is breached. The infection is dormant and is again unleashed into District 1.

The Americans try to contain the infection as best they could but it is no use. We find that one of the characters in the film may have a special blood group that could hold the clues for a cure or serum. The Army however wants to kill everyone now the infection is loose. The film moves on to a chase movie, 2 conscientious Americans trying to get the possible saviour to safety followed by the ravenous infected and the Army's attempts to fire bomb and gas any survivors.

Although the action sequences of this film are well shot and the story is simple but good and well told I still felt that this film lacked something. Whether it was the feelings brought out in the first film, Danny Boyle's ability to make the audience feel as isolated or as scared as the main protagonists. The sheer feeling of desperation that a massive disaster like this could create and the different reactions of different people to this.

There was none of this in this film, yes the effects are good, the story runs at a good pace and the ending is predictable (but still good). I just did not come out of the film satisfied, maybe it is because I like 28 days Later so much, I don't know.

I would only recommend this film to someone like myself, I enjoyed the blood, the violence and the suspense but unfortunately there was something missing.

Great review, I also thought there was something lacking but couldn't put my finger on it. Do you think there'll be another one?

Affleck's Response to affleck's Review

Tania,

<br/>Half of me hopes there is, its a great concept, but again half of me hopes there isn't. I am afraid that another film will dumb down the original even further. A bit like the Rambo films, first blood was excellent but the subsequent sequels turned John J into a comic book character. (don't tell anyone but I am a big Rambo fan).
