Nekonin3's review of Holes

“'Holes' is the must-see movie of the month. Stanley...”

'Holes' is the must-see movie of the month. Stanley Yelnats, the main character is accused of stealing shoes and is now forced to dig holes at Camp Greenlake. Camp Greenlake may sound like a nice place, but Camp Greenlake is a dried-up barren wasteland which is in actual fact a penitentiary. Stanley must face a lot of challenges, which include digging holes, loss of personal freedom, friendship challenges and ordeals, and even yellow-spotted poisonous lizards! Every day (including the weekend), Stanley has to dig one big hole. The hole must be five metres deep and five metres wide. Every day, the children at Camp Greenlake have to wake up at 4:30am, and then set out to dig holes. They have to be quick; otherwise they'll be in the hottest part of the day.

The characters of the movie had to face many dangers. Some of these include the animals, such as rattlesnakes, scorpions and yellow-spotted lizards. It was interesting to see these animals in action on the screen. The sound effects were very realistic. Hearing the hisses and rattles definitely makes the viewer feel involved in the movie. Once I almost jumped out of fear when seeing the yellow-spotted lizard.

The setting of the movie was appropriate. It was set up in the middle of nowhere, in a dried-up desert just like the book suggested. The buildings of Camp Greenlake inside and out also matched the book's description, and watching the movie will give you a realistic visual image of Camp Greenlake without reading the book.

There are some concerns though; it is cruel to make people dig holes in the hot sun, and watching this may upset some people. Also, seeing what the children are fed every day may make some viewers gag, and watching the foulness of Camp Greenlake, such as the poisonous animals and how the children are forced to work so hard may cause some complaints from parents for their children's safety. Apart from this, this movie had no other faults.

Stanley Yelnats is the main character. He is strong in heart, and is always ready to help. When Stanley arrives at Camp Greenlake he finds it hard to settle in. He was being treated poorly, and was finding it hard to have to dig lots of holes. Zero is a boy who apparently, has nothing in his mind. He is always motionless and hardly ever speaks. When Stanley finds out Zero can't read, Stanley decides to start teaching Zero how to read and write. Thus, a true friendship begins.

Armpit is a nasty character in 'Holes'. He is very mean to Stanley. Once, Stanley called Armpit Theodore (Armpit's real name) and Armpit grabbed Stanley and threw him on the ground for not saying his nickname. I think the characters in 'Holes' resemble the good and evil in all human beings.

I think 'Holes' is a great movie. It is a very interesting adventure about two very different teenagers who learn to trust each other and work together. 'Holes' has a great storyline, and many viewers will find it entertaining. I rate 'Holes' 4 stars out of 5.
