Bad Points
Unable to update maps
Repeated mapping errors and wrong directions
Satellite signal easily lost in city centres
If signal lost then locates to random place leading to confusing directions
General Comments
I was given a TomTom Go at Christmas. The first one developed a screen fault within days. The replacement has developed the same fault after 3 weeks.
I discovered the map in the unit was out of date and that it is not possible to update it without sending the brand new unit to Tom Tom who will then replace it with and old, reconditioned unit containing the new map.
The mapping has many errors - routes directing you the wrong way down one way sreets that have been one-way for years, that instruct you to do a U-turn on a dual carriageway, that direct you to turn the wrong way onto on-slips of major roads, that don't recognise mini-roundabouts, that tell you to keep right at straight forward motorway junctions but not when a major road divides into two, that don't recognise a straightforward right turn but direct you on a complicated treck round nearby streets to get onto the correct road.
If the satellite signal is lost, the unit has a system for estimating your position until the signal is restored. it doesn't work, so the unit assumes you are where you are not (usually not even on the route you are following) and starts giving you confusing instructions to get from where you are not to where you really are.
