John Hoff's review of Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow - This movie should come with a warning...”

★★☆☆☆

written by John Hoff on 11/01/2005

Good Points
A truly creative reinterpretation of the classic story with clever homages to the Disney cartoon and a rich vision of post-Revolutionary America seen through a gothic lens. Really can't say it's all bad.

Bad Points
The horrible moments in this movie are utterly unredeemed by the good points. As a viewer I felt so tricked by this awful goth-capade that I sought out this website to make my very first submission. The movie is full of maddening loose ends and can't seem to decide what genre it is trying to fit...and not in a groundbreaking way, either, but in a flop failure kind of way. I've never before viewed a film which made me feel bad for fundamentalist Christians, but this movie's cheap shots are so clumsy that you want to ask, my word, who beat this director with a Bible?

General Comments
Sleepy Hollow - This movie should come with a warning because it has horrible stuff that is unredeemed by the good things in the movie, and maddening loose ends. It is contradictory and poorly contrived, seemingly unable to decide which genre it wants to be, and not in a brilliant groundbreaking way but in a failure floperoo kind of way. In its favor, the movie is a rich, dark gothic vision of post-Revolutionary America, and a truly creative reinterpretation of the Sleepy Hollow legend, with cheeky homages to previous interpretations like the classic Disney cartoon. But it's just a freaking mess trying desperately to keep itself together, not quite succeeding, not unlike the Headless Horseman himself.
