HarryMann's review of VW T25 Campervan

“The VW T25 Campervan is a great vehicle, nothing quite...”

Good Points
Comfortable ride, good steering, ground clearance, good layout, masses of room, the Tardis of campers, most compact and practical in the World, even today. Strong running gearm well engineered, chassis still solid after 15 years. Most spares can be sourced from Euro Parts Importers economically. Thousands in the US and around the World love them, because they're lovable!

Bad Points
Body seam corrosion, not terminal, can easily be sorted. Powerplants require good maintenance and attention. Early diesels weak, injected petrols need good earths. All but 2.1 WBX's somewhat underpowered by modern standards.

General Comments
The VW T25 Campervan is a great vehicle, nothing quite like it exists today, many feel VW made a big mistake dropping it for a copy of a Ford Transit. The last of the classic VW bus/van/pickups, the T25 camper is based on a 3rd generation rear-engined layout, and very mature, other than its powerplants. Frequently re-engined with VW TDI diesels, Audi 5-cyl and Subaru flat-four petrols, it's then as good as a perfect compact camper as one would wish.

The 4WD Syncro versions are still in a class of their own, having superb lock, comfortable ride yet offering amazing off-road capabilities - again, should have been developed further to take advantage of the SUV boom! VW made a mistake in 1991 - a deal with Subaru for their ultimate flat-four and a beter VW Diesel version would have transformed this vehicle into what many now have done for themselves. Still rated highly in South Africa as the ultimate taxi-van, with their 2.6 5-cyl Audi version being produced right through to 2002!
