Stephen Hawking Writes In The Painstaking Way Show

Stephen Hawking writes in the painstaking way shown in 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly', by twitching his eye as his computer runs through the alphabet. This process means he writes at a rate of four words a minute, which gives him a lot of time to think about what he's saying. Perhaps this is why his prose is elegant and clear, and, at the advice of his publisher, the book contains only one equation: E=MC2.

One might think this is a book which can only be read by physicists, and indeed he does cover some of the most complex and difficult topics in physics, but in such a clear way that even I could understand it; and as I sometimes have difficulty with the instructions on cereal packets, this is surprising.

He covers black holes, the beginning of the universe, string theory, quantum theory, and many other topics, throwing in some vignettes about his disability and famous bet with Kip Thorne on the nature of a particular star: Hawking lost, and had to buy his friend a subscription to Penthouse. Hawking's book remains one of the best selling science books of all time, and for good reason - it is the best.
