“I had heard lots of horror stories about Air 2000 but...”

written by Cashmere Donegan on 21/05/2005

Good Points
People at the checkin in Gatwick were very helpful and honest

Bad Points
The plane was delayed by 3 hours, the seats were so close together it was uncomfortable, the staff were very rude and one flight attendent kept bumping me either with the trolley or with her arm or bum as she walked past.

General Comments
I had heard lots of horror stories about Air 2000 but I didn't mind flying with them as I had flown with them a few years back to Barbados. So I thought that flying from London Gatwick to Montego bay Jamaica would be fine too. How wrong was I...

Ok where should I start. I booked my ticket less than two weeks before which meant I had to collect it from the airport. When I got to the airport the lady behind the desk couldn't find my reservation, I was told I would be flying on Britannia but when I got there I was told it had been changed to Air2000 but this didn't bother me too much.

Then when I went to check in and was told that the flight had been delayed (which you would expect with a charter flight) but it had been delayed by 3 hours because of "technical reasons" I asked the check in guy to elaborate as I'm already scared of flying and wasn't about to fly on a broken plane and he said that because of a broken plane earlier in the week it had had a knock on effect on all flights to Montego Bay. So in other words the plane was late leaving from Jamaica and had not actually reached the UK yet.

The plane was at a far gate which took about 30 mins to walk to. Once on the plane we still had to wait another 45 mins before we could even move anywhere. I had an aisle seat which wasn't the best idea as the rude flight attendants (one in particular) kept bumping me with their trolleys or elbows or bums. First of all I thought nothing of it, then after the next 10 or so times I started to think it was something personal. The flight attendants did not make the flight enjoyable at all they had no manners and didn't seem to be happy at all and didn't hide this fact there was no smiles they were not helpful they just created a very bad atmosphere.

The seats were so close together it was just uncomfortable. The food was nothing special (but then I wasn't surprised by this) and the plane just sounded old it kept making lots of odd noises like an old van that needs servicing. It got to a point when if it stopped making odd noises I got a bit worried.

After such a long uncomfortable flight I just wanted to get off the plane and to my hotel. But once again more delays awaited me. When we landed we were told to stay in our seats as the police had to come on and remove some drunks and the police took long to arrive. On top of this we had to wait for the stairs to arrive so we could actually get off the plane.

When we finally were allowed to leave the plane it was late and pitch black outside (bearing in mind we were supposed to arrive in the afternoon) there was no one to direct us where to go, which isn't very helpful when it's your first time in Jamaica. I ended up following a group of old ladies as they seemed to know where they were going.

On the way home I couldn't even find the check in desk as it wasn't even sign posted. The check in staff were very vague about everything I asked when I would have to go through to the departure lounge as I know some places its 30 minutes before but others differ and they told me "when they call you" and the announcements were so quiet it would be very easy to miss the flight.

Obviously the flight was delayed (this time by an hour) but I was half expecting this. We didn't know what was going on, where to go or where to board which was extremely frustrating and the staff were absolutely no help at all.

Service on the flight back was better (no one bumped me) attendants were happy to help, food was the same but the free wine made up for it. Even though it was squashed and the plane was making the same weird noises, I actually managed to get some sleep before we landed.

But then because we had landed so late we had to wait (once again) for a gate to become available, but one didn't become available so we were stuck on a remote stand for about an hour waiting for the stairs to come (again) once off the plane we then had to wait for a bus to come and transport us to the terminal.

It was the first time ever that I was actually I glad to be back home. I'm sure it isn't a surprise that I will never be flying with them again. I know charter flights are cheap but this was disgusting and have since flown on other charter flights and had no problems maybe Air2000 should look at these and learn that charter flights do actually have standards.
