written by Rollerball64 on 21/06/2007

Having used my rake a few times, yesterday it refused to turn the rake, and soon smoke appeared from the air intake. Flymo were not available, as the lines were constantly busy. But they were contacted today, and without any problem, they volunteered to send me a replacement Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 lawn rake within the next 7 days.

In a panic, I took the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 lawn rake apart to investigate! The drive cog and belt had melted. Why? - Because the motor cooling is a poor design! The air intake filter gets blocked immediately by debris, and then the motor overheats after 15 - 25 minutes use. There is no cut out, and so the motor drive becomes so hot the plastic drive cogs and belt melt until destruction!

Perhaps the drive cog should be metal, and you should get a few spare belts with it!

Spare parts for the drive cog seem hard to locate. From reading on the net, this overheating/failure seems like a common problem. So why not make spare cogs etc easy to get?

I suggest only short use, and clean the air filter (under grass collector) before and during use. (The motor is mounted in a triangle section, transversely mounted in the unit next to the grass collector with a long pull out filter on top).

I hope you read this before using, and not after you have melted yours.

I got about 1 1/2 hours use out of mine, then the spikes stopped spinning. After investigation I noticed the drive belt had snapped. I spent all day on a Saturday looking for a replacement, with no success. So I waited until Monday, then I rang Flymo direct. After being put on hold for about 15 minutes, I managed to order a replacement and one spare, costing £12. When they arrived, I fitted it quite easily, but I noticed the new one was a little tight. I just assumed it was a precision part. Here goes... 20 minutes later smoke came out of the motor and made a noise. Back on the workbench, I took it apart and noticed the new one had pulled the motor out of alignment, and it was rubbing on the flimsy, cheap plastic casing. What a load of rubbish!! Who tests the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 lawn rake?

We feel that Flymo did not do it's home work on this product,it was a pity . It looks good and was easy to handle but burnt out on second use. For the money we feel it was very poorly thought through.
Come on Flymo get your act together. We would of liked to have had some use for our money.

I bought my Flymo 340 Lawnraker Compact last May, and I used it for 30 minute. I got it out to use today, and after 5 minutes it burnt out, so I returned it to B& Q and got my money back.

written by Bob Cleveland on 13/08/2006

This week I decided to invest in the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 and read the few reviews there were and certainly was slightly put off. However, I was able to examine a display model in our local B&Q and was impressed with the features and bought the machine. Today, Saturday, we spent about 4 hours using the raker with no hitches whatsoever and no problems with the motor. Thatch collection was very good, especially when compared with all the other models on the market in the home consumer range. Emptying the collection box was also easy and it needed emptying much less than other models due to its design. Well done Flymo.

Having had a small Black and Decker Lawn rake for more than 20 years, it burnt out on Saturday last. We went to our local B&Q to buy a new lawn rake, and saw the Flymo, for which we have previously had a high regard. We liked the wider rake and the more powerful motor. How misled we were. Within half an hour, smoke started coming from the motor housing, with a distinct burning smell, and this continued when we had stopped raking and just had it on with no load.

I am taking my Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 lawn rake back to B&Q, as it is not fit for the purpose! It seemed OK for about 20 minutes, but then the motor burned out, after only 20 minutes use!

“I bought the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 because at...”

★★★☆☆

written by Redsetter on 10/05/2006

I bought the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 because at 600w it had the largest motor out of all the lawn rakes I had looked at (much good that did as it burnt out after a short while)! While the machine worked, I was impressed at the way it collected the moss and compacted it in the box, which was easy to empty. It has 6 different height adjustments, but only the lowest one would lift any of the moss out of my lawn. The higher settings may be OK for leaves, but alas it did not last long enough to find out! The spring tines seem to point in the wrong direction for the rotation of the rake. None-the-less it seemed to extract the moss and thatch etc OK.

The handle is adjustable for people of different heights. Even at 6'4" with rather large feet I was not kicking the machine as I walked behind it (a problem I'm sure similar sized people can sympathise with). I have given such low scores because of the problem with the motor. If that had not packed up the scores would have been much higher, as I could not fault the machine.

I have a problem that the tine roller will not rotate when the roller/tines are on the ground. I have replaced all the tines and also fitted new drive belt as original was in tack but a bit worn and still no good. The strange thing is that when the roller is off the ground it freely rotates, lower it onto the grass and it stops!!! Can anyone out there explain what is the problem??

Thanks for answering this question.
