“The motor of our Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 burnt out...”

Written on: 04/04/2009 by mycraigydon (1 review written)

The motor of our Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 burnt out after around a total of five hours use - two sessions of 2 1/2 hours each. it was at the highest setting and used after mowing. The motor was not labouring and only a couple of tines broke so I was not abusing it. I also made sure the side and internal air vents were kept clean of debris too! Not for large lawns, may be OK for regular maintainance of postage stamp size gardens where it is used for just 20 mins each time… Read Full Review

I used the Flymo 340 for the 1st time on 31/03/09. It was quite easy to assemble and did the job quite well. For the price that I paid for it and the back breaking work it has saved me then it appears to be reasonable value for money… Read Full Review

Written on: 04/09/2008

Like all products this one isn't idiot proof. If you haven't mowed your lawn for three weeks, your lawn is covered in stones branches and other debris and you take this out on the lowest setting and cram the thatch down in the bucket as you go, the motor will burn out and/or the tines will break. If you use common sense, mow your lawn first, clear the lawn of stones, half bricks and other debris and you take a modicum of care going over hill and dale across your lawn this will the job just… Read Full Review

I would suggest these comments are not the norm. Reading other reviews broken tangs do not seem to be an issue, which running over a building site as suggested would cause them to become damaged. Also running them through a wood would also tend to damage them. I would therfore suggest the end user is aware of the requirements and limitations of the device and the device is, as suggested of poor quality and not reliable enough to the task.

After a total usage of about one hour on this Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340, 41 of the 42 tines had broken off. Clearly the tines are not strong enough and not fit for purpose. Spares availability is not good… Read Full Review

Written on: 19/08/2008

Our Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 was a replacement for a black & decker which we'd had for years and was fabulous - sadly it seems they have stopped making it so when if finally died after sterling service we couldn't replace it.

The flymo was enormous by comparison, the wheels kept falling off and it did nowhere near as good a job. We bought it last year so I suppose we've done better than others but the motor gave out on its first day of use this year… Read Full Review

This is the best lawnmover ever purchased. Truly magnificent, perfect stripe formation a wonder to behold. Not a bad size box either for collecting the cuttings! All these people who have said that this mover is rubbish must be unlucky! I love mine and would never be parted from it… Read Full Review

This review appears to be misplaced - it describes a lawnmover (lawnmower?), not a lawn raker.

Written on: 28/07/2008 by TOM LONG (1 review written)

This is the second Flymo Lawnraker I've been foolish enough to own, "unlucky" seemed the opinion of the shop when I returned the first one, sadly just out of warranty. I purchased another as I had found it's performance to be OK until it too failed same problem, burnt out motor. I believe I used both very sensibly and can only conclude that this item is not of the quality it needs to be to perform the task required of it. First machine had approx 6 hours use, second lasted less than 3 hours not… Read Full Review

Written on: 14/07/2008

After a couple of uses, my Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 stopped pulling thatch etc. - upon checking underneath the machine EVERY ONE OF THE 42 METAL TINES HAD SHEERED OFF! I found them scattered throughout the lawn. Had to buy replacement tines through the internet as no one stocks them.
Lack of spares availability didn't bode very well with me - Flymo should include a couple of full sets of tines in with the boxed product and not just the handful they choose to supply which are useless as they… Read Full Review

Bought this 340 in February have used it twice, it doesn't work as well as my 20 year old Black and decker did and after the second use there was not one spring tine that was not broken, it should be brought to the attention of the trading standards body. This machine is not of merchantable quality This model has an uprated motor in it so at least it kept going but I suppose if the tines are all broken there is not much load on the motor anyway… Read Full Review

Bought just over a year ago. Used once, cleaned & put away. Used once this year, and lasted 15 mins before the motor overheated & seized solid. Nope, it wasn't overstressed. Nope, it wasn't too full of moss/thatch.
Don't touch this model with a barge-pole… Read Full Review

Written on: 15/05/2008 by Malcd1 (1 review written)

Just got my Flymo Lawnraker out of the garage for its 2nd run out. Within 2 minutes the motor had completely seized. There was an acrid burning smell and smoke coming from one of the vents. B&Q were no help as I have had it just over 12 months. I can only use a lawn raker once or twice a year so to seize up after using it only once before.. it is a disgrace.

Please do not waste your money on a Flymo 340 Lawnraker. You have been warned… Read Full Review

Written on: 05/05/2008

I bought my Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 in Jan 07, I have a small patch of grass to the rear of my house. I used my lawnrake last summer and then packed it away. Since then my garden got a wee bit out of control, to sort this out I borrowed my father in law's powerful Petrol Mower to blitz it. Today I took my lawnrake out to give my lawn a trim and to my horror smoke started to appear from underneath.
I expected it to last a little longer than 16 months. Very disappointed… Read Full Review

Written on: 03/05/2008

We have two medium to large lawns and have found the 340 to be suitable for its task. We find it very easy to use if user manual is read properly and the grass box is emptied regularly. I wonder whether the complaints of others about motor burnout and drive belt problems are due in the main with trying to operate the machine when it is overfull perhaps?… Read Full Review

Written on: 20/04/2008 by brianshug (1 review written)

Having read these reviews, I was a bit wary of buying this. It was easily put together from the box and the long reach cable meant I didn't need an extension cable trailing around. I switched it on and tried on the highest setting and then lowered the setting for the right result. I noticed the performance got poorer but this was because the moss was overfilling inside the box. I can imagine this is why some other people motors have been burning out, it the motor can't turn. Even though it's… Read Full Review

Written on: 04/09/2007 by Si101 (1 review written)

I bought my Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 from my Local B&Q in January. I had just moved home, and it is a long time since I had a garden to look after. After a few trims I noticed that it was not cutting the grass very well, so I had a wee look under and found that some of the wire "blades" were damaged.
I then went back to B&Q, only to find that the store I went to did not sell them, and I was told to try one of their larger stores! Surprise surprise, they did not sell them either.
So I ordered… Read Full Review
