Sound Quality Is Excellent On This Jazpiper Mvr64p
Sound quality is excellent on this jazpiper mvr64p portable MP3 player. I have had it playing songs of many different bitrates and its happy with all i've used. The design is stylish and classic. As an older player, it was cheap (£79) and with a 64meg smartmedia expansion holds 128 megs of songs, about 32 tracks at 128 quality.
The player incorporates bass and treble control, 3d sound, dsp settings, a digital fm radio and voice recording, as well as a telephone book facility (that I've never used). This would be a great player but for 1 issue; if you reorder the songs in the player using the desktop software (jazpiper desk 1.1.1.1), bass and treble settings are moved to -9, and 3d surround sound is switched off. In addition radio presets are lost, all to major annoyance. this is the second jazpiper i have owned, the first did the exact same thing. Technical support is very poor in that they never reply to any emails.
Unless you buy an extra printer port, it's annoying to have to unplug the printer each time you want to download songs to the player.
On the plus side, the voice recording facility is very useful for lectures ect, if you clear out all the songs you get 4 hours of recording (8 if you get 64 meg smarmedia). all in all an affordable, versitile player with great looks and one flaw that lets it down big time.
I too have owned a MVR64P for over 2 years now and I love it and hate it at the same time. I love the sound quality. I love the ease of use. I love the portability. I love the fact that you can use nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries and they will last a good 10-15 hours.
But there are things I dislike about it. Lack of support until just recently when the website popped back up under new ownership. I still have yet to hear back about a possible firmware upgrade. I have given up fiddling with the presets. Every time you turn off the device, the radio presets are erased, forcing you to reset them next time. Don't bother, the radio eats battery power faster than playing mp3's.
Like I said, it has EXCELLENT sound quality and I use it just about every day to and from work. I mainly listen to mp3's of audio books. You can get hours and hours of 56kbps audio. Add a 32mb smart media expansion memory card and you can get even more. My version will not allow a 64mb expansion card (for whatever reason). If I listen to music, then I might turn on the 3d surround sound which is quite nice. I usually just leave the dsp setting to ROCK, which sounds the best to me for music. For audio books, I just turn it on and listen.
My only other gripe is sometimes the software will work only the first time you link up with the unit. If you wish to add stuff later, the computer will sometimes have a problem connecting to the device and I have to reboot for it to work properly. And yes, Parallel is darn slow.
I will continue to use this until it croaks. With smart media cards coming down in price, I have no worries about storage. Besides, I usually don't have the opportunity to use the device more than an hour at one time, so having hours and hours of music or audiobook isn't necessary.
One might think the complaints would distract me from buying the device. Not at all. A simple firmware upgrade could fix the minor problems with the presets and radio settings. Throw in a USB option and you are flying. As of now, the MVR64P is no longer for sale directly from Jazpiper.com, but I see some websites are still selling them. If you are short for cash, i would still consider buying one. I really do love the device. It is everything my portable cd player is not. It doesn't suck batteries power fast, no moving parts, and it has a great base of 64 mb of ram. Go for it.
