Shantee's review of William Shakespeare, King Lear

“Good reading....I liked it”

The only work of Shakespeare I knew till I read King Lear was Romeo and Juliet. I always thought that all Shakespeare’s books talk about love and may be a little bit of other themes too.
What thrills me the most with Lear is his vanity. He is so proud that he believes what his evil daughters tell him and banishes his lovely Cordelia because she is honest and doesn’t want to say things just to please him.
It is really similar to our political issues now. Those who have authority use their authority for their own sake and not for the good of their people. They are lost in their glory and forgot their duty. And those who don’t please them are severely punished like Cordelia.
The other interesting part of Lear is when he begins to go insane after discovering what his other two daughters are doing. It shows that truth is always revealed and that people will always realize their mistake in the end. Justice is not only a word but it is reality.
The betrayal term and the manipulation part of it too are very interesting. It is amazing to see how far people can go for more power and more fame. They are even capable of doing the worst thing to their own father. Human nature is really frightening.
But the end of King Lear is what both sad and happy. Happy because bad people paid their bad behavior (they all died) and sad because Cordelia died and Lear died out of grief for Cordelia. One thing is sure, the kingdom is safe in the hands of good people. This is a relief.
