“Utterly appalling”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Purcell291 on 20/07/2014

Ordered for a wedding present two Kartell bedside tables on Boxing Day. Was told delivery would be 6/8 weeks. That fitted the wedding schedule so that wasn't an issue. That is until the delivery got more and more delayed, the wedding came and went and my attempts to cancel the order and get a refund were stonewalled by the odious Kieran. After about 14 weeks they turned up. Don't go near this company. Worst customer service ever and sailing close to the wind as far as business ethics go. Dreadful.

“AVOID - Report Director to Companies House”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Nevillesm284 on 21/04/2014

I did some internet marketing for Mac&Mac, but invoiced them under a different company that is still trading which was called LCC Retail Ltd. and has recently been changed to Porto Furniture Ltd. I have taken court action against this company and will have a date scheduled with the court very soon as it is in the latter stages now. I have been promised payment and sent cheques that have bounced etc. for 5 months now and had enough with them just messing me around. I am a human being and have feelings, I don't need to be treated like this and given false hope and promises for 5 months. If you have had a bad experience I would suggest you go and apply to get Owen Mackrell disqualified from being a director of a company so he can't keep setting up new companies and ripping people off. He is not fit to be a director and should be disqualified and will be if people apply to get him disqualified and put complaints into companies house about him.

“So sorry to hear so many have lost with this company”

★☆☆☆☆

written by HonestTrue on 01/03/2014

So sorry to hear so many have lost both financially and spiritually with this company. I did bring this organisation to the attention of trading standards back in 2009 but unfortunately they were unable to progress with my concerns. If it is of any assistance I am happy to share a timeline of my experience and only hope it helps in some small way to show this was not an isolated incident. I did manage to achieve a refund through my credit card provider but no evidence of the compensation personally promised from the MD Owen Mackrell! Dear, Thank you for your email and proof of credit which I have safely received this evening. I had hoped to speak with you in a civilised fashion when I called your office today however, your short and somewhat hostile tone came as quite a surprise. I don’t hold you personally responsible for this debacle, I think it is more indicative of poor staff training and customer care skills that seem to let your organisation down. To highlight what a customer sees of Mac and Mac I have put together this brief timeline of our experience with this order:- Mac and Mac Interiors Order TIMELINE 20/12/08 Order placed and full payment made to Mac and Mac interiors. Delivery expected week commencing 19th January to week commencing 26th January at the latest i.e.4/6 weeks. 30/01/09 My wife telephoned Mac and Mac to chase the order and was promised a call back with a progress report. No call came. 02/02/09 My wife telephoned Mac and Mac and was told the order was on it’s way and to expect a telephone call to arrange delivery by no later than Friday 6th February. No call came. 06/02/09 My wife telephoned Mac and Mac to establish what was happening with our order. She spoke with a person who informed her that the warehouse team were at lunch but promised her a call back that very afternoon. No call came. 09/02/09 I called Mac and Mac and spoke with someone. I was told the furniture was due to be delivered shortly and to expect a call back that afternoon to arrange a convenient time. No call came. 10/02/09 I called Mac and Mac and asked to speak with the most senior member of staff and was put through to John Ryder. John apologised that so many calls had not been returned but would look into this poor customer service personally. He also suggested that my order had been ‘damaged’ in transit and Mac and Mac may not be able to deliver. He promised to establish the facts and call me back that afternoon without fail. No call came. 11/02/09 I called Mac and Mac and spoke with John Ryder. He said he was unable to call me back the previous day as he was feeling unwell. 11/02/09 I called Mac and Mac and insisted on talking with the Managing Director Owen Mackrell (sp). Owen assured me my furniture was safe and would be delivered by Friday 20th February. He apologised but said he would call me personally week commencing 16th February with an update. No call came. 19/02/09 I endeavoured to call Owen and left messages at the Mac and Mac office. I also used Owen’s mobile number which did not answer and latterly resorted to sending him a text message. Again no call back was received from Owen. Honestly what am I to think of Mac and Mac? The icing on the cake came this afternoon. After personal assurances from both yourself and Kieran that delivery would take place on Thursday 26th February your drivers appeared on Wednesday 25th, a day early, just as my wife was leaving for the hairdressers! I have a days holiday booked with my employer for tomorrow, the agreed delivery date. I did this specifically as I was keen to assist and guide your delivery men not through the front door of our house but through the double French doors at the back. Alas, this will not take place. When I spoke with Owen (11/02/09) he kindly offered compensation which I would be happy to accept. I believe this amount should be commensurate with the following:- 10 weeks interest on the sum of £1360 at Barclaycards standard interest rate. Numerous home and mobile telephone calls to your showroom and Owen’s mobile telephone. The cancellation fee for my wife’s hairdressers appointment. I (one) days leave which I am now unable to cancel. The opportunity cost of sourcing similar furniture from other suppliers at SALE prices in December. Distress. I will happily review any offer of compensation (without prejudice) from Owen at my leisure and hope we can bring this matter to an agreeable conclusion.

How foolish I have been paid nearly 2k last march for outside lounges for our wonderfull summer. Same old same old told 8to10 weeks still waiting, numerous telephone calls later and told in December they were now in store ready for delivery January. Wow I thought bring on the summer. I am fuming they have had my money all that time. Lesson to be learnt oh and by the way no sun lounges still not delivered and from the sound of it not likely to be . Feeling blue

I have had an order outstanding since November, and have just found out they are now in Administration. I live far away from Farnham and cannot turn up at the door, what do I do next. I should have learnt my lesson from a previous order which was a nightmare..... I am owed an order and a refund on a previous order ...

Did you pay by credit card? If so please contact your credit card company as you should be entitled to a refund.

there is no point in turning up at the doors. The site has already been re let to a furniture manufacturer called Vale upholstery. The stock is being cleared through the trade. Some suppliers have orders made and are trying to track down clients.

“Lucky escape”

written by on 09/01/2014

Same story - ordered and paid MAC & MAC over £5000 for a table and chairs on 5th August - and was told it would be 6-8 weeks with additional 4 weeks for August Shutdown (only told about shutdown when actually paying the bill). After 8 weeks, was then told I had been given the wrong information and it would be 12 weeks - then in Mid December, was told that it would be another week or so. Daily phone calls and messages proved fruitless. Eventually received a call on 20th December saying good news, the table and chairs had arrived in the UK and they would book me in for delivery in January. At that point I exploded and got hold of the sales team as noone in customer service was answering. Eventually the manager rang me and said he had found space on a van. The table was delivered at 7.30am on Monday 23rd December by some very nice burly men. They said that there had been a big delivery and they were working out who was priority for delivery before Christmas as not all things could be delivered in time. I now realise how lucky I was. Although I noticed a nick in the table, and was going to ring to complain tomorrow - but I guess there is no point now...

Ordered a sofa and large footstool in August last year ,was informed of the 4 week delay due to italian summer hols ....so far ( obviously not SOFA) so good .....no contact at all from Mac & Mac regarding delivery date or even a sighting of a ship at sea containing my furniture ! Fobbed off by KEIRAN EARL ,a complete imbecile , who should have nothing to do with Customer service ever again ........never encountered a person who is as comfortable telling lies , shamelessly abusing customers and spouting rubbish . My experience is identical to those above in respect of dealing with John Rider who "upped" an offer of compensation ,naturally on completion of the order ! Ha ha. .... When it was clear that there was never a hope in hell of the order being completed ( on the supposition that it was ever ordered in the first place ) I went to the showroom with a " witness" and demanded my money back ...when it was obvious that I meant business and that I would be staying in the store and distributing copies of all the reviews I had to potential customers ,they coughed up and when it was confirmed that the money was cleared funds in my account ,I left the store and advised the two stunned sales guys who were actually ok ,to start looking for a new job very soon .i feel desperately sorry for anyone else who won't get their furniture or their money . I hope everyone will contact WATCHDOG and give the culprits involved the publicity and exposure they don't want !!!!!

I hope they deliver.

“Company has ceased trading - my experience and next steps”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jenbercamp on 07/01/2014

Order my sofa 13 July. Had a prior order of chair, chaise longe and mirror delivered earlier, no problem. Was advised 10 week delivery for sofa plus an additional 5 weeks for European holidays! So realistically didn't expect it until October which was fine. Started chasing at that point. Unanswered emails and phone calls, awful service. Finally got hold of the General Manager John Ryder in November who appeared sincere and apologetic. Gave me an arrival date of 12 Dec. Nothing. Spoke to John 16 Dec and he assured me that they had gone to Italy to collect the goods and that they were due in the UK any day and that I would deefinately have it before Christmas. You guessed it...I ate my Christmas dinner without a sofa or any communication whatsoever. Got on to it today. Quickly discovered thanks to the Internet that they have ceased trading and that Insolvency accountants have been appointed. Three things to share with you: 1) email Rebecca at the insolvency accountants AABRS on [email protected] and tell her the details of your unfulfilled order 2) call your credit card company, or even debit card if it's Visa debt as you have the same "chargeback" rights, to get a refund 3) speak to Micasagroup, hugely helpful, they deal with all the same suppliers in Italy and if your order is still over there then they can probably get hold of it for you. You will need to pay the suppliers in Italy for it but you should have a refund from your card company for the original purchase. You will have problems if: - your order is already in the UK and in Mac and Mac's warehouse as all these goods will be ceased by the administrator - you have paid in cash (oops) And finally, I am told informally that the company have deliberately gone down this route in order to get some of their debts written off, and that they have done it before. Shame on them. No wonder UK PLC has issues and we are all paying for the austerity measures for years to come!

thankyou, extremely hepful. I have 7K worth of goods with them on order. I have been robbed blind by some kid called Kieron over Xmas. They had no intention of fulfilling any order.

Can I ask, I paid by Visa Debit. What are my chances of getting a chargeback approved even though they have gone bust?

My understanding is that you have the same protection on your visa debit as you do on credit cards. It's exactly for these sorts of scenarios. Call them and lodge your claim. I spoke with someone too up to November and then went higher. It's unscrupulous that he took an order from you at Christmas. I would say you should report it to the Office of Fair Trading.

Visa debit should cover you with card insurance. as long as it has the visa sign. E mail the manufacturers or uk agents if you know the details. The only person that wants your furniture is you and if its been made its been made for you.

“MACANDMAC CEASED TRADING”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/01/2014

Went there today to buy some chairs. Notice on the door that they have ceased trading and to contact liquidators. A bit cheeky that they are still appearing to be in business on the internet. DONT ORDER FROM THEM AS ITS HIGHLY UNLIKELY YOUR ORDER WILL BE FULLFILLED The unfortunate thing is I have outstanding orders with them and I presume at this stage its highly unlikely they will be completed or I will get my money back.

This is all the info I have and have since found.

Their number is ringing permanently engaged so you wont get any joy that way. The landlord changed the locks and forced everyone out unbeknown the staff who weren't paid for December.

The owning company is LCC Contract Furniture Ltd

Their number goes to an answer machine. I went there this afternoon. Sign on the locked door is "More information to follow"....very helpful

This is their accountants address but Im sure they wont help. Apparently they owe HMRC a stack of money

Liquidators. She has been very helpful. Apparently their "Directors" are meeting with them on Friday to discuss.

If you purchased on Credit you can try a Section 75 appeal with Visa/MCard. Unfortunately I went on a debit card so that doesn't apply to me.

Other than that. IF M&M are restructured/sold off then the new company is under NO legal obligation to help apparently so best chance is either Credit card or M&M are refinanced under the same rules and then they chose to fulfill their obligations (unlikely in my view)....all in all.....bleak prospects!

Good luck!

I believe all client will be contacted in due course so that you can try to recover goods / funds from the liquidator.
In the meantime, if you have your order details to hand we can try to contact the manufacturers for you in order to see if they will release your goods.
Please ask to speak to our Director.

We have known about this for a while and helped many ex Mac and Mac customers with their orders. I would suggest to anyone that firstly contact your credit card company and get your money back and we'd also try help get your order fulfilled. Harrogate Interiors

I totally agree with what you are saying. Yes of course added sales is a bonus and yes it is business. But we have had phone calls from the middle of last year with this problem and our customers have been delighted we have managed to get them what they ordered. Our aim is not only to increase sales which is what business we are in but to offer some advise to customers stuck in their current position. I would advise anyone purchasing anything to fully research a retailer before ordering or parting with their money.

Your aim is only to Sell, like Mac&Mac before you. Its Why I stick to my first comment.

All customers are fully aware of where to buy the products. Like myself if I want something I search the internet for the best price and service. Anyone is happy to buy from whoever they feel most comfortable with. I certainly won't apologise for offering someone another option to buy what they initially wanted.

Although for those we haven't I apologise and we will endeavor to do better in 2014. I also would like to ask if you have a connection with mac and mac as your apparent interest in the subject leads me to believe you might have worked for them. On that note I feel I have exhausted this debate and will continue to try our best in what we do.

Actually a customer let down by Mac and Mac. Like I have written before, personal disappointment . So since then it's about research. Just assuming you want to help isn't enough but old reviews will show and some company house checks have placed you in the same situation as Mac And Mac. I write here only about being aware of retailers like Harrogate or anyone else. What have we learnt from a large Retailer around for years like Mac and Mac ? They want to sell, that's all. But you are alone if things don't go to plan, and it's Your money not there's.
So be careful if a retailer jumps on the bandwagon like on here or other review sites saying Hey we are great, we can help. They just want your orders, like Mac did.

No doubt you want the last word, so I will give you the chance. I have said what I need. All Facts, and I speak as a consumer not a retailer who has been let down. So I am giving you a perspective of someone on the otherside.

familyman1 i think you are been rude to be honest. When my contempo sofa was apparently 'delayed due to production problems' i contacted harrogate interiors who spoke to the owner of the company and they told me they were not having any problems.

Long story short i cancelled with those liars and they got it for me in 9 weeks. i waited 13 weeks with macandmac and in all that time all i got was excuses and lies.

If you did your research you would find not all companies are the same.

Personally i now feel justice has been done they got what they deserved they took my money and did nothing.

For those people who are in trouble, i would try and get to speak to the manufacturer see if they can help. It's worth a shout if nothing else.

Under a different name now are we?
Look I don't have a personal interest in Harrogate, chaplains, harrods or whoever. I was simply commenting on them all heading to review centres trying to pick up mac and Mac victims. In a strange way I can see it makes sense to them.
Bit like I said I did my research. If you are lucky to of done a charge back and got your money then your ties are cut and you are free to do what you want. If not, then hold tight. Of cause fight to try and get your money back...etc.
but Please be aware, admin are going through the bare bones of this company, and someone is going to buy the stock and order book. They will buy this at a fraction of a price. So whenyou get a call saying they can fulfill your order, you could negotiate on the price because of there knocked down purchase from the administrators. So there is a chance in the end you could get your product, and possibly less then you intended to buy in the first place.
So my message is Don't just go buy something somewhere else if you have money somewhere in mac(deposit like I have), and if you have waited as long as I, then I am sure you can wait a little bit longer. I went there, there was a number on the door. I wonder how any people rang that number?!!!

At least they have responded to something...anything. Not unlike macandmac they never responded to my calls or emails it was only when i went in and demanded action they did something.

Trying to get my money back from them was very upsetting and caused me and my wife a great deal of stress.

If you have nothing better to say then i would suggest you just go away and let the people who were not as lucky as me try and get a resolution..from anyone who is prepared to help.

“Nice products but awful customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 31/12/2013

Nice products, TERRIBLE customer service. We ordered a dozen chairs, spending over a grand - they were three weeks late. Nobody ever answered the phone or returned my messages (inexcusable in my opinion), so i had to keep calling till I got through. Eventually someone casually said they would chase it up for me but never called back. They were always curt, never apologetic at all - like they really really don't care at all. I hope they read this and realise how bad their service is. In fact scrub that - I hope they don't read these reviews and get what they deserve, which is a bad reputation and a failed business!

“Avoid this company”

We ordered a bontempi table at the beginning of September and suffered the same experience as many of the above. Constantly being told the table was due to arrive on Friday and delivery would be the following week. After a few weeks we were given a different story telling us due to problems in Italy the table wouldn't arrive until after Christmas. We threatened to cancel the order and they offered us a temporary table which as we were desperate for a table Christmas we accepted. However we were uncomfortable due to the customer service we had received and decided to email Bontempi direct just to reassure us the table would turn up. We had a very prompt reply from Bontempi advising us our table and chairs were ready for despatch but they were awaiting payment. This email was copied to the uk representative of bontempi who tried to cover up the fact there was a problem with payment and was less helpful. We however called Customer services at Mac and Mac with our new information and they appeared surprised and declared they would speak directly to the general manager and call us back. We had no call however the next day Bontempi emailed again confirming payment had been made and Mac & Mac advised the table would be delivered on Thursday 19th December. We actually received our table and chairs, but we appreciate just how fortunate we are to have done so. This company should be closed down they are the worst company we have ever had the misfortune of dealing with and can only stress that everyone should avoid dealing with them.

written by annehazelzz on 25/12/2013

I went onto their website and for exactly what i was looking for in a solid oak filing cabinet. It matched what i had already bought elsewhere. It was slightly more expensive than the other people who did not have it, but then it is easy to be cheap when you do not have it. It arrived on time, 4 weeks after i orderd it. There was a slight problem with one of the drawer runners, but a replacement came about a week later. Generally all ok.

“The Worst Company I have Every Dealt with”

★☆☆☆☆

written by lliksmar on 23/12/2013

The most appalling business i have ever dealt with. AVOID AVOID AVOID 1. Ordered Calligaris table 3/1/13 - told 6-8 week delivery 2. Message left Mid Dec telling us table had failed manufacture QA and we now wouldn't get it until after xmas when the factory re-opened, 3. Started digging and found numerous poor reviews (bit late I know) 4. Emailed manufacturer who confirmed no such issue and they were waiting Mac & Mac to organise logistics and "resources", which I assume is payment 5. Discovered Mac & Mac is the trading name of LCC Contract furniture, who as of the 1st Nov went into a Company Voluntary Agreement, owing over a £1m to suppliers and HMRC. You can get a copy via companies house.  6. A new company LCC Retail was formed in June 7. Im no expert but looks like the LCC Contract Furniture will go under and they will/have moved to LCC Retail 8. Phone Customer Service and said I wanted a refund as they clearly had no intention of supplying the table and had taken my money with fraudulently (in my opinion). The guy can be described very accurately as patronising 9. Was told I could have a refund and they would confirm in writing and it would take 3 days. 10. Waited 3 days - no confirmation, no refund - called again this time he told me it would be 30 days. But then he checked and told me the refund had been "processed" and that he would email and confirm - he didn't. 11. Went into the showroom on 22/12 and insisted on a refund and watched them do it on the chip and pin device. They don't like this kind of conversation in front of potential customers. Now waiting to see if it actually hits my bank. AVOID AVOID AVOID

“They could go bust any minute”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Braeden_Wilton on 22/12/2013

The previous comments are 100% true – I’ve looked into this at companies house - these guys are in a CVA under the Insolvency Act - they owe over £1Million - suppliers have stopped supplying them they may go bust at any time - Do what I did – get 3 friends. Hire a van. Drive up there with all your paperwork – once you confirm with them (in a calm manner) that they owe you furniture / money, ask for a refund. if they can’t refund your card there and then (or give you a chq or cash refund) ask them to reimburse you with showroom furniture of the same value. They will say policy does not allow them to do it. they will say refunds can only be carried out by accounts, who are not available right now. They will say you will get your refund the following day. They will say they will transfer the money into your account. Do not accept it because IT WONT HAPPEN. These guys lie (not really the fault of the staff – they just do what they’re told to do) They are in a CVA under the Insolvency Act Once they go bust, you’ll not get much (if anything at all) Grab what you can now.

“Mac and Mac in a CVA under the insolvency Act 1986”

Do these guys think the public are stupid? Also: The real name of the company is LCC Contract Furniture Limited. This company has been put into a CVA under the Insolvency Act 1986 a few weeks ago. You can go to the company house website and see for yourself. If you have placed an order, demand to be given proper information. The best way is to go into the showroom when it's busy and make a scene and demand to be given proper information. They owe suppliers over £1 Million.
