Sym Shark Maintenance
Engine Oil
Change oil after the first 300kms and every 1,000 kms thereafter. Change oil filter element every 5,000 kms. It's a screen thumbeline-like object when you open the filter nut assembly. It catches foreign materials in oil case.
Use API SH, SAE 10w-30 grade or better.
Oil capacity is 1.0 liter (0.85 liters for routine change).
After putting oil, check dipstick on the right side of the scooter located near the muffler. Oil should be between the upper and lower limit. Don't over fill the oil crank case. Change oil tip. Dont tighten the filter nut too much, turn it about a 1/10th turn using a wrench after hand tightening. I had to replace mine because one time I tightened it too hard. Just check for any leaks afterwards.
Reset the engine oil indicator located under the gauges (small, rectangular relief hole) using your ignition key. Indicator (below speedometer) shows green after re-setting after an oil change, after 1000kms color turns red to indicate that it's time to change oil
Transmission Oil (Gear oil)Change transmission oil after the first 300 kms and 5,000 kms thereafter. Use SAE 85W-140
Brakes
Brake Freeplay should be 10-20mm. Use Dot 3 Brake fluid if the oil reservoir is in the lower mark. Adjust accordingly
Batteries
The Shark is equipped with a maintenance free battery unless the previous owner changed it. Periodically inspect the battery terminals for corrosion and clean off dirt using a steel brush.
Sparkplug
Electrode gap should be 0.6~0.7 mm (check with feeler gauge)
Hand tighten the sparkplug as far as possible and then tighten it 1/2~3/4 turns with a sparkplug wrench. Use CR 8E for Shark 125
Tires
Stock tires F- 100/90-12 59J T/L; R- 130/70 59J T/L
Tire pressure (for stock tires) is located under your glovebox. The conversion to PSI is: 25 psi front and 28 psi rear (30 psi rear with a backride)
Air Cleaner
Clean every 1000kms more frequently when your area is dusty/heavily polluted
Remove mounting screws from aircleaner cover located at the right rear side of the scooter (opposite the muffler). Remove air cleaner cover and element. Take element out and clean using compressed air. Don't use any solvent.
Replace every year (more often if dusty conditions).
Fuel
Main stand should be put down on the ground, engine shut off when filling
Dont fill above upper limit (metal rod near the mouth of the fuel tank) of the fuel tank when refuelling. Tighten the cap after refueling.
Fuel Tank capacity is 7.5 liters or around 225 kms cruising range (depending on road conditions and riding characteristics.)
use unleaded gasoline of 90 octane or higher
Note: Maintenance should be performed more often if the motorcycle is frequently operated in high speed and after the motorcycle has accumulated higher milage.

The Sym Shark 125 Is The Best Turbo Charge Scooter
The SYM Shark 125 is the best turbo charge Scooter ever..........Good points are: 1.has a flooring to put my things if my trunk is loaded.2.try upgrading the flyballs to a heavier one so it can sound like a big bike and it roars when u reach 80kph... damn i love that sound....3.the stock of the shark 150 can chop those underbones swiftly.4.stylish and the handling is perfect even without upgrades on the suspension. Bad points are the 2004 model which is like mine, the rectifier is near the gas tank.... the new models where somewhere near the carb.
hahahaha... mine is 2004 also.. well Speed up and BOOM!!! gademn rectifier how come it is near the Gas tank...

The Sym Shark 125 is a great all round scooter and I would advise anyone looking to purchase a 125 scooter to take one for a test drive as you won't be disspapointed.
It is a nippy scooter and its eye-catching looks sold it for me. I bought mine from my local dealer in Somerset.

I brought my SYM Shark 125 in 1994, brand new. The first service I had, I was told my back brakes needed renewing, but that due to a design fault, the whole back mechanism had to be dismantled. The work cost me £200. Then this year, the electronic ignition stopped working. I was told it needed a new battery, so I got one at a cost of £28. The lights and indicators started failing, and I took it to another bike shop. I was told the starter motor had burnt out and would need a new one. Three weeks later it was replaced at a cost of £160. Three months later, ignition went again and the lights and an awful rattling noise came from the engine. To cut a long story short, there was a fault with the starter motor mechanism and some bolts had broken so that instead of the starter motor switching off after starting, it carried on and burnt itself out. Coupled that with the design fault of the petrol cap being in a dip and letting water into the engine, the total cost was £400. I am so sick of this bike and can't wait to get rid of it. I have paid for it on finance at a cost of £97 per month. I feel totally ripped off by the dealer, the manufacturer, and people who have carried out work on the bike. If anything else goes wrong, I shall be quoting "Sales of Goods Act" and getting my money back.
If you want my advice, stay away from SYM anything!
Its all about loving ur Bike.. I had mine too got it 2004 and still using it,, every change oil I Bring it to my trusted Mechanic tuning up cleaning up the filter and the Spark plug tip, replacing the Spark plug twice a year, replacing the Front and rear Break every 4 months I'm using mine daily even on sunday... and bringing it to the mechanic when I feel somethings change on how my bike runs.. changing my Tires every year using bridgestone tires... yes I know I spend much on my SHARK but I believe that your Bike Represents the Rider itself... its Bulky but its Agile.. the only Issue that I have encountered to My shark was the rear break is weak, but using after market pads is the solution try the Taiean Made CHICKEN brand has a good grip when u break.. and the Fuel Cap issue? I bought a Rubber footing used for furniture that have the exact size of the Fuel Cap, Issue SOLVED!!! Nice riding!!
