If you find that you battery light has started to come on and you are losing power steering when ever this light is on, its time for a new alternator, as the power steering pump is hydraulic but runs off a electric pump this will cost around £180 just for a new alternator but can be fitted your self with little effort.

If you can hear a grinding sound as well coming from under or around the alternator this is more then likely your water pump going and would recommend that you take it straight to a mechanic as this could cost you over £1200 to correct if the cam belt slips off the water pump.
