Bmw M5 Luxury & Speed
I own a 2006 BMW M5. It is a fantastic car very comfortable and very fast with its 500 HP V10 - E60 engine. The SMG transmission takes a little getting used to but once you master it it is really fun to go thru the 7 gears paddle-shifting. My car has a heads-up display making it very convenient when using the built in GPS navigation as the directions show up right in front of you. Repairs are pricey - so be sure and get a used M5 checked out by a mechanic and run a CarFax. Also MPG are low but I get 18 mpg on the freeway using cruise control and 12-14 mpg in town traffic depending if I keep the beast reigned in by driving in automatic mode vs manual mode. This is truly a luxury high performance auto and for the dollar you can not find more HP bang for your buck!!

Performance is great, runs smooth. Is a lot of fun on the open road. safety features are spectacular.
Although it cannot go at its full potential and give you the best of its ability, what is available to you is more than enough anyway.

I've Had My $92,000 Blue 2006 Bmw M5 For Less Than
I've had my $92,000 Blue 2006 BMW M5 for less than 7 hours, so what do I know except I can't wait to get in it tomorrow morning! I might just get in it tonight again and take it for a spin. I can't believe I did this, but I can't work up any buyer's remorse either.... it's already spectacular, and it only has like 40 miles on it.

I got a hold of a 2003 BMW M5 and it was a masterpiece. I got it up to 240 on the highway and it a thrill. The transmission was so beautiful, it shifted through all the gears with ease, the clutch was like a marshmallow. Very fast car indeed.

I Recently Got A Hold Of A Low Mileage 2001 Bmw M5
I recently got a hold of a low mileage 2001 BMW M5 and man is it a blast. I've been born and bred on German cars, including a VW Golf GTI and a '99 M3 convertible, so I'm definately somewhat prejudiced, but in my humble opinion, nothing else compares. You drive a BMW or an Audi, and either you "get it" or you don't
I see a lot of remarks on this and similar forums arguing back and forth about who can get 0-60 a few tenths of a second faster than who, or who can top out a few mph faster than the next guy. Well, since I'm not drag racing or turning laps at Talladega, to me, thats not what it's about.
Let's talk about cars that can perform everyday tasks such as hauling 4 adults or a load of groceries, but that can also be driven for performance and enjoyment.
Let's also assume that financially we're not ready to drop over a 100 grand for a ride.
Where does that leave us? Well, for my money, the ONLY car that compares to the M5 is the Audi RS6. Which one of those two one prefers, well, you cant go wrong either way
As for M5 vs M3 - Hey, my '99 M3 was loads of fun, but moving to the M5 was like going from AAA to the major leagues
Jaguar and Mercedes are fine if you're more into plush and cush. Lexus is a Toyota in pretty makeup. If you enjoy DRIVING, the Germans have no competition, and the M5 is at the head of their class
Drive one sometime if you get the chance. You'll either understand. Or you wont

Considering The Bmw M5 Is The Most Powerful Produc
Considering the BMW M5 is the most powerful production sedan in the world, and has been ever since it was produced. All those sily people who think you wouldn't like to buy a german car, i suggest serious mental therapy.
oh how you are wrong, the BMW M5 (E39) has 400hp and 500Nm, the mercedes S65 AMG sedan has 612hp and 700Nm, so the M5 isn't the most powerful production sedan. It is a nice car though.

I Drove My Brothers M5 For A Few Hours..its Carbon
i drove my brothers m5 for a few hours..its carbon black, with black..fully loaded..cost him more than 50 grand. today after only a year, and around 28 000 miles, its worth 30 grand.
i have an m3 cab, my brother is always saying how he prefers the m3. so do i, the m5 sounds like its muted when driven next to an m3, its not as quick either, although it handles very well. if you dont need the space, then consider buying an m3, its much much much more exciting. the 400 bhp and v8 engine is special, but then it needs to hurl around a big heavy car. my brother has now fitted in a tubi exhaust system from scuderia (which treats ferrari exhausts for maranello) in egham surrey, and now the car sounds great. its also added around 20 bhp to the car.
most magazines have written the m5 is better than the e55 amg which is much faster, the s type r (which is pathetic) and the audi rs6, and its about 7 yrs older than all of them. its a great car, but one shoud really wait for the new m5 with a 500 bhp v10 engine, or buy the m3!!!!
and the m5 will only do 0 -60 in less than 5 seconds, and 0-100 in less than 12 if you get someone like montoya to come and launch it properly.
The jag R series cars beat any BM into a submission, all the power and a load more style than the Ford of Germany!!!! Get real...
What is it with these reviews? They seem to be written totally subjectively and with very little information included. I want details - what is the handling like, is it oversteery or understeery on neutral throttle, is the torque curve smooth, does it react badly to bumps mid-corner? Was the clutch progressive or snatchy? Was the gearbox light and direct, or heavy and vague? Was the steering communicative? Disappointing.
Checkout the report from the Nurburgring - ( where The M5 'ring taxi' driven by the amazing Sabine, impresses EVRYONE that goes there from Pro to Boy Racer) - when the M5 was let loose with an M3 - and what happened - the M3 came in a full 10 seconds BEHIND the M5.
The M5 is for men and M3 for boys - and of course the boys will never repeat this story - thats what makes 'em boys.
Leave the M5 to the men boys.
racer- come back and just 'review' the M5 for what it is
They are both awesome vehicles and I dont know anyone who doesn't TOTALLY respect either of them. I have to use my M5 for Touring the Continent with my family, business and sport. It does all three perfeclty. If I was only looking after sport, the M3 may be the one
Also, check out the real figures, an M5 is slightly quicker overall although on the road, it is academic. Neither would lose the other.

When You Have Owned A Few Really Nice Cars, You Te
When you have owned a few really nice cars, you tend to notice that there is a league table. This league table is split into three, generally speaking. In each league there is a'genre' of vehicle. In the lowest league you get cars that neither inspire or satisfy the soul. They do their job with no character, they just are good cars. In the middle league, they start giving a taste of that 'X Plus'. They will do something very well and deliver more than the they promise on the can. Then you have the league all manufacturers aspire to. In this league you have those very special cars that do so much, so well, that they stand so far above the crowd that no matter what the seasoned critics or reviewers write, you can really only appreciate the experience from behind the wheel.
Having just bought a 2001 Le Mans Blue M5, I can tell you this is true. I read all the reviews I could find before spending my £36 grand on my 14 month old piece of automotive viagra and nothing prepares you for the experience.
Let me wallow in it for a moment . . when people ask you always explain it is 5 litres of 400 brake horsepower 32 valve BMW, followed by a sinister little chuckle. Women get squidgy, guys get jealous, hot-hatchers get annoyed and Porsche/Ferrari owners dont bother just in case. If you need the numbers, read a review from a magazine for the 0-60 in 4.8, the 100 in 11.5 and 1/4 in 13.3. What they cant explain is the feeling you get driving an M5. Authority, ability, safety, and an immense turn on caused by the sheer contempt that this car has for the limits you normally expect. The M5 owner is privileged to experience what is lauded as the best saloon car in the world. I've had a few, and I agree. Wholeheartedly. Get one now.
fantastic discussion so far, lads, i absolutely love BMW and am looking at an '03 E39 M5. i taught myself how to drive a stick on one of these while working at a local BMW dealer. i love the vehicle, but im not sure about the total cost to own over a lengthy term... any advice?
I have owned a 2002 M5 for about a year now-the 5th BMW in a row and by far the best. (Also more reliable than the 2 previous 540s).
Fuel approx 24-25 mpg on motorway, 21-22 clogging it along fast but winding lanes, and when in traffic-use a smaller car!!
Great to drive-but be warned suspension much firmer than 540-rear seat passengers feel car sick when driven "enthusiastically".
A friend who owns a Porsche 911 turbo was staggered when he drove the M5-as fun to drive as his Porshe when flooring it-but smooth, quiet and silky for long trips/taking granny to church etc. Tried an M3 first-great along the lanes but very noisy and harsh on a motorway-not such a Jeckel and Hyde car as the M5.
Hey RJ Morris, welcome to the club. 2002 year M5 should be V.nice. Make sure you get the extended BMW warranty on an M5 - otherwise don't buy it. Also go to http://www.bm3w.co.uk
It's the best M-Power forum (no Rover drivers allowed!!!)
I have just read the comments, very interesting!! I am about to purchase a 2002 plate, I asked the dealer why the current owner is selling and he said that he has run out of points in his licence. I have owned a few nice cars in my time time and I can honestly say, I can't wait.
Interesting points of view expressed above. I have owned lots of cars, French, British (well the Austin Metro was British when built), Italian and German and I can honestly say when it comes to bomb proof build, all round performance and a quiet kind of cool, the Germans are the ones to beat.
German know how to build cars - who invented the VW Beetle, the Porsche 356 Speedster how many times have Audi won Le Mans?
My point is I have just bought a silver 2000 year M5 and it is AMAZING - this car is a stormer in every sense. I\'ve driven a MG ZT160 and for the money it gives you performance (in a straight line) but the M5 exists on a higher plane. Hasselbank to Sunday league player? - no comparison.
