Volvo 850 2.5

This car is great its a 1994 2.5 20v glt wagon and im impressed

comfort smoothness of the ride but can still rip snort when booted

best car i bought 400 pounds with tax and mot and 90,000 genuine miles

who would of thought it a biker praising a volvo.

I had this car for 8 years,past the first four years M OTs,had to leave the car in derby went back to the southwest to live,it was outside for four and half years parked on a drive ,never moved had a flat battery,went back with a trailor and new battery,the car was covered in green moss and two flat tyres,looked a right mess,fixed the new battery turned the key and it started first time amazing,back down in devon put in for M O T three new wiperblades to get through,very fast car, for a 1996 not bad at all.

Had a 940 2.0 turbo wentworth estate which impressed me so much I purchased a newer 1996 850 t5 estate---one word 'Awesome'this car had every extra the trim level was out of this world, but the power just press down and you were pinned back in your seat and rocketed to 130 mph and passing Porche's on the way, sad to say turbo problems are common and engine was wrecked at 140K, yes think about it a racing engine that run for all them miles, have now a 850 2.5 non turbo estate again 1996 that has done 142k, not a patch on a T5 but what a car, sails through MOTs build quality is fantastic, all leather inside, wooden dash, electric everything all working and a drive that puts many newer cars to shame, as you may gather I am hooked on volvo but only the pre Ford ownership models, got to own another T5 in the future!!!

Service costs are no greater than other cars especially if you do the basic things yourself ie oil and filter changes (Essential)many owners report mileage of 250k and more with no major problems and all in a car that thinks it's a van---and performs like a sports car!!

2.5 20v non turbo, very rapid for such a heavy tank of a car. A little thirsty but worth the expense over tiny engine, small cars just cannot compare to this.

Can pick a good one up for around £850 which will see of most boy racers without looking like a racer yourself.

I've had a Volvo 850 for 3 years and bought it as a stop gap. I still have it now because I cannot justify wasting money on changing it for something newer but inferior. Contrary to what other reviewers are saying the 5 cylinder 10V engine sounds great, is beautifully smooth even after 110K miles, returns 28 mpg and the automatic box operates smoothly if used intellegently. Selecting '3' in traffic or on twisting/hilly roads stops the gearbox 'hunting' between gears and keeps 'take up' on the throttle instant. Build quality is pre-Ford standard so is bullet proof. Bad points - weathered plastic bumpers and loose interior trim on tailgate - not bad for a 13 year old car! Good points everything else!

I am looking on all the reviews about Volvo 850 estate and I looked at them before I decided to buy the one, but they are different from what I am experiencing. Noise and noise although the mileage is quite small only about 46000 milse only.Also one more thing, it takes place only during the first start of the car. After making few meters, I think on the second or third automatic speed, noise of metal scratch is coming from the front left wheel of the car. But remember; only when first started, then it is even stopped at the traffic light on whatever speed it is not repeating, until the engine is stopped and then started again.

Huge space - how did they do it? I've moved from a W124 Mercedes E320 and I thought that was a great load carrier but this beats it. Great all round visibility too. Major safety feeling on board... have you noticed how the SIPS sticker reminds you of this every time you look in the rear view mirror 'cause it reads right way round? Cleverrrrrr...

A great workhorse and load swallower, all at a very affordable price.

I now look at Volvos in a new, and very positive, light.

Comfortable, long legged work horse that enables me to take kids to and uni with all their kit.

Any estate car that has done 174,000 miles and is still going strong has to be a great car.

Excellent spacious, comfortable long lived estate. Reliable too!

I have owned by 96 Volvo 850 2.5 manual over 2 years now. No problems worth reporting. I have the 20v model which by all accounts is far better than the 10 valve version. I would thoroughly recommend this version as a family car purchase.
